in the chorus "i am come to you" is actually "i am calm to you". and "let the girls be terrified" is actually "let the ghouls be terrified". this is another halcyon song from sol seppy. it holds the same wonder, love, and oneness as "enter one" does. beautiful effects with what sounds like rain on windows in the opening and ending notes. i think she's describing finding someone right after looking very hard; a spiritual oneness that releases the true self from the oppression of wrong or mismatched love. |

| the nature imagery in this song is stunning. "you" has a deep connection with the woods, but their treatment towards it is juxtaposed. it is first seen cut and charcoaled, their "empire", cradled in arms. this attributes the wood to "you" like mother to child, protector to protected. they smear the ashes over them, what comes from the burnt wood -- i say they are taking the blame for what they did that caused the wood to burn in the first place. something happened that winter that made "you" burn the wood, and they now regret it, because they were supposed to protect it. they run to the forest (a "cold sanctuary", meaning all warmth or fire has gone from the place, because of "you"'s actions, but it is still a sacred place), where the "last breath of snowflake" is "swallowed beneath", meaning "you" has repented enough for whatever happened that winter to remain just "a swollen memory" -- it has passed. | |

the imagery in this is very abstract, which lends to the abstract meaning. but there are some similar veins throughout the song -- the speaker talks about phantoms, or this person who doesn't exist in "the tangible world" (in dreams, i suppose; "i have dreamed of your image"). there is a disconnect in this description, because the person he is speaking to is never fully embodied; they float about in the song. he seems to be remembering someone from the past, but at the same time they are still there ("if i floated away, would you still recognize me?"). so maybe this is a song about someone who has changed beyond recognition, and while the speaker still knows them, he is only able to see a ghost of who they were in what they now are. there is also the signature wintersleep violence in this song, what with the feral and flesh-hungry bats, incising infections, the blistering humming. he seeks protection from this violence ("invite their protection"), so perhaps he is trying to save this phantom person from whatever is destroying them, eating them alive. he is trying to decide whether it is worth his time to try and save this person, or just let them go to their own self-destructive waste ("should i let them in? or sell off the property?"). ultimately he is trying -- "incise the infection / invite their protection". |

i think the speaker is approaching this situation feeling very inappropriate. he obviously loves whoever he is speaking to, but the mentions of "even if the words don't sound right" and "even if this isn't the right light" makes it seem like he feels wrong about this love even though he still undeniably feels it. this inappropriateness might have something with the self-effacement whomever he is speaking to longs for, what with the thunderstorm tearing them "piece by piece away". but at the same time, they are "stuck together", so the speaker feels this impending doom as well -- "til the day my heart dies". they are entwined, like in any love song. but it is such a fresh take, riddled with the burden sensitive romantics feel. i love it, the imagery, the meaning, everything. beautiful. |

i see this as a hopeful song. the speaker obviously has a past that hangs around and haunts her, even while she is trying to pursue a new relationship. she is trying to forget about the past, and asking this new person for help tackling old fears and sadnesses from past relationships that won't go away. at the same time, she is asking for this new person to not leave like everyone else has ("will you stay home and keep our memories warm with me") so new memories can form, of the two of them. the speaker mentions not letting her sadness isolate her ("i won't scream in my head and let it isolate me"), to put herself and her feelings 100% into this new relationship. she knows that this new person is afraid and because of how these past relationships could affect their new one. she also knows it will get hard, because rehabilitating a heart is never easy work ("i won't get mad when you say things are getting too hard"). people who have been hurt deeply in the past tend to attribute these qualities to anyone they begin a new relationship with -- sometimes it even prevents them from getting into a new relationship. i think the speaker is talking from this position. the difference is she's found someone she wants to try with again, and she's trying to clear the ghosts from her past so she can find happiness again. |

| i don't think it necessarily has to be an abuse situation. maybe whoever "he" is is that overworked father (but i worked hard/so we can have nice things) who is overcritical of their son, and the son ("I" in these lyrics) feels that he can "ne'er-do-well", so he's stopped trying (you're not even dressed/the house is such a mess). | |
