Portugal. The Man – Sleep Forever Lyrics 14 years ago
For me this song speaks about the exhaustion that comes with the belief that we have to live "perfect" lives. This idea is instilled into us every day, but the reality is that there is no "perfect" life, no best way of doing anything, really.

I'm also not sure if this is correct, but I thought it was "I don't need 'em like you do... I don't fear 'em like you do."

Gypsy and the Cat – Time To Wander Lyrics 14 years ago
There comes a time when you have to just set out on a journey, to figure some things out about and for yourself. I feel like the beautiful and joyful (but also slightly melancholy) melody in this song is just a way of showing that it's okay to leave and discover some things for yourself. The journey can be tough, confusing, lonely and very strange. But it's natural, normal, and everyone does it. "Whelp... Time to wander!"

In the end, the question is whether or not some of the people in your life closest to you will stick with you through your journey.

Smog – Teenage Spaceship Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song speaks about his teenage years (and all of ours, for that matter) and how we all feel so freaking incredible at that age. We feel so magical, so strong and new, and yet so innocent, confused, fragile and afraid. How do you spend your time as a teenager? Doing nothing! Except driving around the neighborhood and just "hanging out."

We're like a spaceship in the sky -- as teenagers, we like to think that no one really knows anything about us (U.F.O's), but in our minds we also like to think that the world centers around us, and everyone sees us as a beautiful star in the night sky. In our minds, we're awesome. We'll never "lay down like a dog, or bark like a dog" because we have that stubborn, teenage rebelliousness to be ourselves, and we tell ourselves we'll never change, only to realize later in our years that being yourself is one of the hardest things to achieve in this busy crazy world.

Smog – The Morning Paper Lyrics 14 years ago
Some days are good, some are bad. But it's not worth worrying over. Take each day as its own. I think "red apple falls" might be akin to the saying "that's how the cookie crumbles". Perhaps he's just saying "This is how it is, for me."

Smog – Held Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is essentially about a vindication, or re-birth of some sorts. He describes allowing himself to be "held" and "surrendering" which describes his new philosophy on life, to let things happen, rather than trying to force them in his favor. The jets he wishes for their destruction, might be a symbolic way of letting them destroy the old him, or to simply allow what may come to come (even if that's destruction, death, or a new and positive world.) In the end, I think it's about allowing the world's, and peoples, energy to effect him for once.

The Swell Season – Low Rising Lyrics 15 years ago
Also, now that I think of it, perhaps the singer has just realized how in love with her he is. And now that he realizes he's been a jerk, he can't believe she's still there. And he wants to turn it all around and start to work on this relationship.

I am amazed by this song, it definitely has a "Into the Mystic" kinda feel (also one of my favorites.) To me, this song expresses the fact that this relationship isn't necessarily at rock bottom, but according to the singer it can only go up, and he's going to make sure it does, if only for "the love of you."

Sigur Rós – Svefn-G-Englar Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the lyrics (translated) are beautiful, but sometimes I feel sigur ros' lyrics meanings are just as astounding or even better left untranslated. This quote from the movie "Shawshank Redemption" whic the character, Red, says... really embodies how I feel:

"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free."

I think this is true with many songs, especially if the singer has such a beautiful voice, like Jonsi.

The Long Winters – The Commander Thinks Aloud Lyrics 16 years ago
Sad and beautiful. I remember when the Columbia incident happened. I agree with the idea that it's a lot like breaking up as well, it's interesting how similar the two sort of are. I definitely got a "Major Tom" (Bowie) feel from this song as well. Kind of the same idea.
