| Fiona Apple – Not About Love Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| @[ILUVU:29069] It's been 8 years and I'm just seeing your response to a comment I made on a Fiona Apple song when I was 20 years old. I may have been a bit less articulate than I am now. But, dude, what the fuck is wrong with you. You sound absolutely batshit crazy. Good luck with all that jazz | |
| Dawes – Million Dollar Bill Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| It's one of my favorite songs... ever. I don't get tired of it. They have a live version available on youtube (Live from Rhythm & Roots) that's just mesmerizing. This song is one that makes me both happy, sad, and peaceful all at the same time. If you have ever truly, deeply loved someone and had to separate from them because they wanted or needed something/someone else to be happy... you'll identify. You can love a person with your entire heart and not be enough for them, or even be destructive together. It can be for any myriad of reasons... but the take away is that no matter what, you continue to love them and to hope to always be with them in some small way. It takes a lot of reflection, healing, and emotion work to get to this stage of acceptance after such heartbreak. In my opinion, it's one of the purest love songs that there is. | |
| Syml – Fear of the Water Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
The correct lyric is actually: "And you smile when you dive in, like you're never coming back" This is important. He is singing of his departing lover's smile as they dive into the water-- but his own paralyzing fear of it. I personally interpret the song to be about a person who has been broken up with. He's still deeply in love and longing for them to come back. He didn't see the break up coming, he was "the last to know." Now his love is "dislocated" and they are happily diving back into the water to move on. The singer is in agony. He sees his ex-lover's face when he closes his eyes. He wishes for them to hold him. He is grieving, alone, heartbroken, and scared. |

| @[onceacanary:19694] That's beautiful. Thank you. | |
| The Civil Wars – My Father's Father Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| I think that "home" doesn't need to be a literal place. It could be a state of mind or some way of existing. In reference to the tracks and his Father's Father's blood, again I don't think it has to be literal; it could be some 'way' that his forefathers had lived. | |
| Syml – Fear of the Water Lyrics | 8 years ago |

My interpretation of this song... is fairly straight forward. The singer is agonizing over a break up. The singer cannot seem to accept the truth of it, they are still deeply in love- yet the other individual is not. The person the singer loves is ending the relationship and they are detached. The singer is hurt by the other person's positive demeanor when they interact, it's a foretelling body language that implies the break up's finality... the lover smiling after a break up is never coming back. The singer is in anguish. This is a painful song for me, and anyone else who has been in this situation may read into the song the same way. Hits a it too close to home for me to listen to without tears, but it is a beautiful song never the less. |

| Syml – Where's My Love (Acoustic) Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
This song is... beyond beautiful. It is incredibly morose and the official music video further drives the emotion home by following a young woman who texts "I'm sorry" and slowly sheds her clothing as she walks, sobbing, through the woods- before submerging herself naked into a lake- leaving the impression that she does not intend to come back out. There is a piano/viola version and an acoustic version available. I'm not entirely sure which I prefer, they are both uniquely beautiful. (Personally) I interpret this song to be about the singer lamenting over his hurting lover. She's cold, and intentionally distancing herself from him. Possibly after a terrible fight or a break up. He is desperate to find her and tell her he is also hurting, broken up inside, and would do anything to protect her. |

| Ryan Adams – Dear Chicago Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| Who just couldn't measure up.* | |
| Ryan Adams – Dear Chicago Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
I would agree that in the beginning of the song Ryan is singing to one ex love, "Chicago" and at the end of the song he is addressing a different love, "New York City." I would imagine 'New York City' to be the girl 'Chicago' told him he would meet someday, but who just couldn't This is a part of unrequited love. We try to move on but we sabotage ourselves because we are not looking to love someone new as they are, we are looking to recreate our lost love. And they will never measure up. Attempts at new romances are just distractions and placeholders for the previous love you have lost but your soul has not let go of. I see this song to be about that struggle, and that pain. Ryan can't let go of Chicago. New York City didn't stand a chance. |

| Coeur de Pirate – Place de la République Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
not the best, but a translation: We met in the time when we would please the demands we created but we got lost in them You're only a few kilometers away And our hearts, our hearts have stayed in this sea I ran along the Seine Hoping to find you, you serene soul I ran without knowing how or why we get carried away We only knew each other for a moment And I don't know if you're worth it anymore It's rather hard to be sure And when you are in Vincennes That evening, don't forget me I will wait for you long enough to say thay I wanted to take the greatest risk An evening that made me so sad An evening at Republique Square And as you can see it's the end I must cross the ocean tomorrow morning From your arms I will silde out ever so gently And it's reality that awaits me I know your heart is already inhabited by one or more girls that have marked you I'm less strong than the other But I hope strongly that you miss me That I stand out so much And I don't know if you're worth it anymore It's rather hard to be sure And when you are in Vincennes That evening, don't forget me I will wait for you long enough to say that I wanted to take the greatest risk An evening that made me so sad An evening at Republique Square |

I went through a slow break up several years ago. We were a long distance couple, and it took several months to finally "quit" the relationship. I listened to this song a lot when it was really, finally, over. Sometimes I think of him and realize I've forgotten all the details of why it had to end. But if I listen to this song... my heart immediately remembers. I cannot remember everything he did to me but I can remember how he made me feel. And that's quite enough. I think the literal meaning is open to interpretation... but obviously, I see it (and feel it) as a break up with distance involved. |

| Ryan Adams – Wonderwall (Oasis cover) Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
sometimes I am not sure which pretense I listen to this more under: making it about myself; that tiny part of me that is my own wonderwall - or, making it about my relationship or love. either way I have always preferred Adams cover. it is haunting. and there is deep heartache and longing in this song no matter what you decide to give it purpose to. |

| Against Me! – Ache With Me Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| The sound might be different but it is still AM! and you can hear that. I'm fond of older AM! and I'm fond of this, too. I would love a more broken down acoustic version of this song... I'll spend every dollar that I've ever earned. I'll bleed my heart out, I'll give every wound. | |
| The Get Up Kids – Long Goodnight Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
it's about mental illness or mental instability. every attempt to is filled with holes = failure to overcome emotional problems reads like a polygraph I'm told = his mood, it's jagged ups and downs I'm not bitter anyway. let it go = he accepts he can't change what/who he is. never sleep still/lest I forget/tied down by handicaps instead = sleeping difficulties, crowed mind.. feels overwhelmed by his thoughts. not bitter anyway/didn't want it to turn out this way = accepts what he is yet possesses inner animosity and conflict. I feel as if the rest is self explanatory for those of us that suffer from a form of depression or anxiety. PTSD/dissociative disorder here. But it could be anything. Bipolar. MPD. Depression. Anxiety. He's just singing about his battle with overcoming his mental demons. He's singing about how he feels he is losing the fight. If it all ended tonight, you know that he wouldn't mind. It' be back to the good old times... before it won. anyway. that's my respective take. |

This has probably already been written in a comment, but this is my personal take on the song's meaning. I see it as a love triangle, of sorts, between one man and two women. He ends up making a choice to be with female A, and this song is female B singing to him. In the first verse she is asking him-- can you lay beside female A and tell her you love her with all your heart and body?--The way you did with me? And asking him if he can do it with a clean conscience. I see the chorus as being female B, again, singing to the man- and asking where she went wrong following her heart, why did she deserve to be cast away the way she was. And I see the third verse as female B singing about her resulting hurt, pain, and thus rage at what has happened. She is telling the man-- You didn't think. You didn't care. You left me, and you know it wasn't right. You used me. But now we will never be together again because of what you did, and this complicated web you've created. And then I finally feel that female B is asking him: Just tell me the truth. Explain to me why you've done this. It's just how I see it.. they really are wonderful for having such mysterious poetic lyrics, great music, great energy, and such intense emotion you can feel from them through their songs. whatever this song means to you, I think everyone can agree-- it is strong, and it is passionate. |

do you remember the first person you feel in love with? really, fell in love with? trusted with everything? do you remember the rush of hormones? the intensity? do you remember how it felt when it ended? the raw pain, the raw ache. you never hurt the same about anyone again. you'll never feel exactly the same about anyone else, again. there are new loves, different loves, but none that compare to your first love. the first cut is always the worst because you haven't learned how to cope and defend yourself from the pain yet. that is what this song makes me think of- but in a poetic, elegantly painful kind of way. |

| Fiona Apple – Not About Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Conversation once colored by esteem Became dialogue as a diagram of a play for blood Took a vacation, my palate got clean Now I can taste your agenda While you're spittting your cud And it doesn't make sense I should fall for the kingcraft of a meritless crown No, it doesn't seem right To take information Given at close range For the gag And the bind And the ammunition round so amazing. she put into words something I was just beginning to figure out about a relationship of my own. some people are so shitty, they start putting you down about things that are so personal and sacred.. it can happen slowly, and you don't realize it. but then, when you get away from it for a minute, and your mind clears-- you see the things you didn't see while they were keeping you down. you realize how horrid they've actually been, and how horrid you've been for allowing it to happen in the first place. and I think she's saying: it's not about love. it's about a recent relationship failure, the complications and pain that accompanied it, and how I can't seem to actually fall in or stay in love. and, I miss it.. |

| Lisa Germano – Cry wolf Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
as was previously stated, I too see this song as being written about "the inexact nature of emotional circumstances surrounding rape," date rape. statatory rape. etc. I believe this song is pretty upfront about the situation it is describing. It doesn't leave a whole lot of room for different interpretations. "They say she got just what she wanted." I listened to this song after a situation warranting similar feelings. It helped me bleed the wound. There is a profound amount of pain in a situation where the line of fault is not precisely clear cut, and the rapee can't even begin to explain it to anyone if they tried--because the general assumption is that they wanted it. Rape is about domination and violation. Boundaries are broken, and it's even harder to identify where the boundaries laid in the first place if the rapee thought they were at fault for initiating any interest in sex with the raper in the first place. A young girl might think she is a woman, and enjoy acting like one by flirting or acting in a provacative nature, but that wouldn't make it right for a man to sleep with her. A teenage girl might flirt or kiss a boy at a party drunk, but that doesn't make it right for him to later hold her down and force sex upon her. |
|
| Fiona Apple – Sullen Girl Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| It is rape. It is violation. It is abuse. It is pain. It is isolation. It is suffering. It is coping mechanisms. It is a beautiful work of emotion and so important to so many people who have felt this way and not been able to emote it themselves. | |
| Phantogram – Mouthful of Diamonds Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Music works for whatever reason you give it; it's all how you feel it. But, the writer of the song did state in an interview that it was written about a relationship gone wrong. He didn't want to give any more information than that, stating that it was personal. | |
