I Figured You Out Lyrics
I've seen you watching her
Every time she crosses the floor
So why don't you just go and talk to
The one you really adore?
I'm getting pretty used to being
The one you always ignore
When somebody wants you
I've seen it before
You're every kind of color
There ain't nothing that you won't claim
Your ambition and promise
And your addiction to fame
And everyone's got a dollar sign
After their name
When somebody wants you
You treat them just the same
So go on and pick up
You don't care what poison you choose
And what person you lose
Should've been me, yeah
Shouldn't it be?
The crushing quiet
Blows in through your window
To someone that wants you
That you'll never know
But I'll pick up around you
And clear everything out
Leave you where I found you
I figured you out
Leave you where I found you
I figured you out
Every time she crosses the floor
So why don't you just go and talk to
The one you really adore?
I'm getting pretty used to being
The one you always ignore
When somebody wants you
I've seen it before
There ain't nothing that you won't claim
Your ambition and promise
And your addiction to fame
And everyone's got a dollar sign
After their name
When somebody wants you
You treat them just the same
You don't care what poison you choose
And what person you lose
Should've been me, yeah
Shouldn't it be?
Blows in through your window
To someone that wants you
That you'll never know
But I'll pick up around you
And clear everything out
Leave you where I found you
I figured you out
Leave you where I found you
I figured you out

im confused... who wrote this song? is it a cover or did elliott write it? and why would he trash his own song, a song that he performed live? and what does rufus have to do with it?? just curious.
Rufus Wainwright's got nothing on this guy. Smith is the man, and continues to be, and his version of this song is absolutely wonderful. I love it.
this song was actually trashed by smith until another singer who goes by mary lou lord found it, and she has her own version, too.
it seems like a song to an indifferent crush?
elliott smith wrote it, but thought it sounded "too much like the f*ing eagles". mary lou lord (who was a good friend of elliott's, and toured with him) ended up recording the song.
These lyrics are a little off... either that or i have a different version. Anyway, here's what i've got.

yeah i actually read some more interviews and have some concerts where he explains his hatred of the eagles, its really funny when he talks about them. and how he doesnt like this song cause he thought it sounded like them, but it doesnt.. all his stuff is far superior. this is a great song, i love it.
"I think this song is like this guy who's on tour with this girl who's got record labels interested in her, and he's the opening act, and all the record people aren't interested in him, they just buy him drinks. And maybe the song is about the girl." Mary Lou said this before she sang this song in February of 2002. I think it means Elliott Smith had a crush on Mary Lou, for a little while, at least, and she wouldn't pay him any attention so he wrote this song about her. The most interesting thing is that he would actually SHOW it to her in spite of his personal feelings about the Eagles and her. Quite revealing.
Great song, I have a live version on my computer.
i'm hearing:

Its getting pretty hard for me to find a song that i dont like by elliott(not like im looking for one anyways) this is no exception. The live version is amazing, i wish i was a bit older to see one of his concerts when he was alive il bet he was amazing. Anyways, the talking before the song where he says that this song was dedicated to mary lou if she was there and he is like, "are u here?" its a great beginning and the song is great. Another classic from mr. smith.
