| Dire Straits – Romeo And Juliet Lyrics

Quite simply one of the best songs ever written, never tire of listening to the various versions out there, but the sax version of the late 80's is the best!
My take on it is quite simply the reality of most relationships, the games we all play, about falling in and out of love, acting like it's not such a big deal, and it's often short lived, in the beginning you promise each other the world, but nothing lasts forever and never perfect, and when it's all over, it's just put down to another life experience and quickly forgotten about, certainly by Juliet in this case! But we all tend to feel nostalgic at some point and wish to return and start over.... |

| Roxy Music – More Than This Lyrics

Loads of great opinions here and I think all possibilities have been covered as to what this great song is a about! It is a really difficult song to dissect as it could easily be given a positive or negative slant depending on the viewpoint of the listener, that's the sheer brilliance!
As a sad song it's about a relationship that's run it's course, exciting and fun in the beginning, not knowing where things will lead, but eventually when all is said and done there is no more than this. The line that suggests this is "It was fun for a while", shouldn't it always be fun? ...but then on a happy note that could mean that it's actually serious now and true love has been found, "Maybe I'm learning", and some things are completely out of our control, "Why the sea on the tide, has no way of turning". Simply put, it's actually both! |

This track somehow manages to capture the sound of summer, awesome production! I believe this track was written about the end of a relationship, from what I can gather the man in the relationship has problems expressing how he truly feels, and the woman has fallen out of love with him, it seems he is scared of saying how he truly feels, but believes it is already too late. You never appreciate what you've got until it's gone. |

I'd completely forgotten about this track until I decided to do a Prefab Sprout shuffle, I like the production on this. Surely this song was written about growing old and yearning for youth, although it almost has a perverted edge to it. An old man attracted to a very young innocent girl. Jenny Agutter saying 'I want to have you', to me sounds like a cruel taunt, tell the old fool what he thinks he wants to hear, break his heart, then run with the Wild Horses! |

| Marillion – Gazpacho Lyrics

Have no idea what this track has to do with cold Spanish soup, which is what Gazpacho actually is?!! This is a great track however, which I think is pretty much written about the price of fame? That's my take on it anyway, maybe the reference to Gazpacho is the disappointment of cold soup perhaps?
There is a great deal of materialism in this song, designer clothes etc., which are just Gazpacho, cold soup, nothing special really, don't mean anything, also many references to the media and the lies they spread trying to destroy individuals ...basically fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. |

| Sting – Why Should I Cry For You? Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
Yes, Sting has said many many times that this song was written for his father, who wished him a life at sea, but I don't actually believe it is about his dad?! From the lyrics, I feel it is certainly about loss, but more about the end of a loving relationship, where one party is still very much in love with the other, but must face eternity without them, I mean you wouldn't ask someone who had recently passed on 'Why Should I Cry For You?', 'Why would you want me to?', that's obvious! A truly great analogy and play on words, one of my favourites of all time.
If you're a fan of this song I can't recommend the 'Live In Berlin' version from 2010 featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, phenomenal!! |

| Simply Red – Holding Back The Years Lyrics

Great tune this, it's hard to find another song that epitomises a certain era so well this is a truly haunting track from 1985 - 86, I listen to this and I'm back in the mid 80's! The comment about 'Only Fools And Horses' sums it up, I don't know why but the 80's hold the most nostalgia for me, may have something to do with the age I was then, all the growing to be done and all the possibilties...

| Chris Rea – Looking For The Summer Lyrics

I agree, a great track... but to me the lyrics imply that he has never found Summer? Maybe it is about a love that never blossomed to its full potential, he still hasn't found what he's looking for and may not ever find his soulmate, possibly? Although it is an extremely nostalgic track, the usual, craving your youth all over again! |

Personally my favourtie version is Bryan Ferry's on his new album 'Olympia', this guy still has it! Superb atmosphere, saw him perform it on ...Later with Jools Holland, and then went out to buy the whole album on the strength of it!! Great track, I think most people can relate to it, we've all been there! |

| Pet Shop Boys – It Couldn't Happen Here Lyrics

Why does every song by the Pet Shop Boys have to be about being gay and having AIDS?! This isn't! They admitted themselves that they mainly write songs about heterosexual relationships ! Anyway, this is my second favourite track on the album 'Actually'. I believe it to be a song about realisation but with the hint of hope, the first verse starts with the girl dreaming of high fashion and success, being young and optimistic about the future, then the second verse is about the nasty people you meet in life, a boss in a shitty job perhaps. It's all about crushed dreams and broken promises but the hope is that at the end of the day they still have each other and seem to just laugh it all off with the help of alcohol! At the end of the day we're all just going round and round in circles ! |

Yeah one of my favourites too, one of their truly haunting tracks. I love the use of the sampled train and station sounds in the middle of the song. I can also still remember the television footage of the King's Cross fire and I was only 9. A complete coincidence though, I think this track has to be about the promise of a better life, realising your dreams in the bright lights and the big city, the reality however, is somewhat different...! |

| Fleetwood Mac – Isn't It Midnight Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
My slant on it is that she is singing about a womanising male and she is hoping that he remembers her as 'the girl with the pretty face'.
I also think it could be about that moment when, out of the blue you can find yourself thinking about someone and for no reason at all, maybe this track was written while the band were on tour, midnight in a hotel room on the other side of the world. |

| Fleetwood Mac – Isn't It Midnight Lyrics

This is a very nostalgic track about someone she fell in love with but who would never be hers or just didn't feel the same. My impression is that she is still in love with this person and 'the midnight' part is about things not being set in stone and that in another time and place things could have been different. She is also hoping that this person thinks about her, 'do you remember the face of a pretty girl?' from wherever this person is in the world, obviously she doesn't know where they are anymore. It's a sad one. |

Surely this song is about the secret world created by a couple in love ? A world that only they are aware of and that no-one else can understand or be a part of, a great tune, I'm just not a fan of the loud bit! The version on Secret World live is the best, the keyboards in the mid, quiet section take some beating ! |

| Talk Talk – Happiness Is Easy Lyrics
|
'SHIT LYRICS', are you kidding me?! This is a great track. In my opinion, written about religion in general, how it offers empty promises, how people follow it blindly into war and without question, how people can justify their acts through their beliefs. The use of the brainwashed school children's voices is really clever and sounds really sinister, using fear to keep everyone in line, 'believe in me and you'll go the heaven, if not, you'll go to hell'. Happiness is easy ! "Take good care of what the priests say, 'After death it's so much fun', this could convey that you may be held back by your beliefs throughout life, afterall you're going to heaven when you die !

Totally agree with the comments, this is one of my favourite tracks of all time ! Basically a nostalgic song about looking back and wishing to do it all again, with the realisation that those days are the ones to be remembered. It could've been written about the band's demise, but I believe it to be more about remembering your youth, growing old and wondering how things might've been different. Another slant on it could be a love interest that never blossomed ?!! |

| Talk Talk – Living In Another World Lyrics

One of the best songs to come out of the 80's and with a great haunting sound ! I think this track is about a one-sided relationship, being in love with someone who doesn't feel the same and not really understanding why. A fantastic track !!
