The girl he speaks of in Piggy, Closer, maybe the is the 'Annie' he speaks of in The Becoming has left him, and he needed her to feel closer to god, to feel alive and have the feeling of being worth something. In the previous song Eraser, he made the decision to end his life, because of everything he has done, his craving for power and feeling, while actually numbing himself out into the montrous machine that wants him dead. (Woah, confusing sentence.) Anyways, he has some doubts, and feels the need to have self worth and power through sex, so he gets a prostitute (Or just a slutty girl, or maybe the girl in piggy/closer/thebecoming/), but then he notices that its not helping him become any better, if anything even worse! "devils speak of the way in which she'll manifest angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress need to contaminate, to alleviate this loneliness I now know that the depths I reach are limitless" He feels its okay for her to do the worst things, but he feels guilty if he does any wrong. He also realizes that how low he has came from the beginning of TDS, now sinking to very low standards to feel alive. (As in, closer to god-through sex, with the woman in reptile) My interpretation is pretty confusing, but I'll sum it up. He uses sex to feel alive/ closer to god, then realizes it hurts him more. Very sinister sounding song though, I really like the machinery and the keyboards at the end when he's screaming in desperation. |

| This is one of my all time favourite songs. My favourite song by Blur, that's for sure. I think its about being depressed when you're younger, and you feel its unfair because everyone else is having a great childhood, etc. So really, a loss of childhood innocence, and happiness like katyisgone said. | |

The instruments in here... dhgdifugdsf so good. I do think this song is kinda related to Closer, and the whole issue with the character in TDS needing to be closer to god, etc. |

I personally think the "____ You" part is the character in TDS realizing what he, (well, the machine side) has done, and then in the "___ ME!" part, he decides the only way to stop hurting people is to destroy the machine side of him, but since that side has taken over he has to destroy himself also. A really powerful song. |

| I love this song. It was amazing at the concert. No other words to describe it, just mind blowing and amazing. Oh, and sad. It really does finish TDS though, whether you think the song is about him committing suicide, or his thoughts after it, or not doing it, it really makes the album feel complete. | |

| This is probably my favourite NIN song, next to The Becoming. It sums up the whole story of the Downward Spiral. Very powerful. | |

| Personally I think this is one of the saddest points in the Downward Spiral's story. To me, its the point where he realized what has happened to him, and now he has hope. Though, the hope and security he feels is short lived as the song Eraser starts. | |
