| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Superglue Lyrics | 16 years ago |
An answer to "Vaseline" by Elastica, a sexually charged ode to petroleum jelly product Vaseline ("When you're stuck like glue / When you need some goo / If it's hot like you / Do you need a clue"). The French Resistance goes the "glue" route, filled with regret that it hadn't been used instead. Dig the reference to and musical quote from Elastica's "Line Up" in and after the lyric "Line up in order of size". In Eddie's words: If Elastica had used superglue instead of vaseline (or for that matter, heroin) maybe they would have stuck together. |

| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – My Way (Is Not Always the Best Way) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
A response to the Frank Sinatra standard "My Way", written by Paul Anka. The original's dying man says he lives without regrets, because in all matters, he lived by his own rules and cowed to nobody else's views. Eddie Argos, on the other hand, understands that life is best lived by committee. In Eddie's words: Paul Anka admires a selfish man's death-bed declaration that living his life according to his own convictions and desires alone is enough. Everybody Was In The French Resistance ... Now! think that one should take others' opinions into consideration. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Hey! It's Jimmy Mack Lyrics | 16 years ago |
A response to "Jimmy Mack" by Martha Reeves and the Vendellas, in which Martha laments that her faithfulness is wavering while Jimmy Mack is away, as she is being wavered by a boy "just as sweet" as Jimmy, and she "can't hold out much longer". It was Eddie's concern that this song had been miswritten and needed fixing that led to the entire French Resistance project: Dyan suggested that the two of them fix it, and so they did. Their version is Jimmy's answer to his girlfriend's failing to remain true. In Eddie's words: Jimmy Mack heard Martha's song. So he's never coming back. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – He's a "Rebel" Lyrics | 16 years ago |
A response to the Crystals's "He's a Rebel", an ode to the charms of a rebellious man (spy the cover for a guy on a motorbike looking positively defiant), in which the subject's nature ("he'll never, ever be any good") doesn't stop her loving him. The French Resistance version is in the form of a bit of an argument between Dyan and Eddie, who knows that all that "rebel" stuff is just BS. In Eddie's words: The Crystals sang a love song to "dangerous" men. Everybody Was In The French Resistance ... Now! opened up the conversation to other men, who see through the "rebel" schtick and argue that it's all just an act. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Coal Digger Lyrics | 16 years ago |
A response to "Gold Digger" by Kanye West, featuring Jamie Foxx. In Eddie's words: Kanye West patronizes the chip-shop janitor who is working his way towards cooking the fries. Everybody Was In The French Resistance … Now! know that the janitor is just working to make ends meet until he gets his shit together and releases a hit record. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N. (You Know I've Got A) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
In Eddie's words: Pop songs have traditionally been "boy meets girl," "girl meets boy," "boy/girl overcome a problem," or "boy/girl break up" — in the last decade or so, there has been an alarming new archetype in pop songwriting: "girl steals other girl's boyfriend." This is a divisive message to send to young girls everywhere, and songs like "Girlfriend" (see also "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift) only teach young women that they can derive more worth and status from stealing each others' boyfriends than they can from realizing their own achievements. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Creeque Allies Lyrics | 16 years ago |
In Eddie's words: "Creeque Alley" by the Mamas and the Papas is the story of the late sixties West Coast folk scene and the formation of their own band in the midst of it. "Creeque Allies" is the story of the early forties French resistance scene and the formation of the freedom fighters who eventually drove the Nazis out of France. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – The Scarborough Affaire Lyrics | 16 years ago |
In Eddie's words: The singer of the 17th-century ballad "Scarborough Fair" instructs the listener to locate his former lover and charge her with a series of impossible tasks. The Everybody Was In The French Resistance...Now response takes his unreasonable demands to their logical conclusion. |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – (I'm So) Waldo P. Emerson Jones Lyrics | 16 years ago |
In Eddie's words: The Archies can't figure out Waldo P. Emerson Jones, a new character on the block who impresses all of their girlfriends and generally shows everyone up. The Everybody Was In The French Resistance ... Now! version tells Waldo's side — he was a little-known "nerd" at their school who spent the summer reinventing himself and came back with added confidence, a new haircut and a much cooler name (Waldo P. Emerson Jones is clearly not the name his mother gave him). |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Think Twice (It's Not Alright) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
A response to Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", in which Dylan puts on a brave face and moves on at the end of a relationship. The French Resistance see through this façade to Dylan's true, deeply wounded feelings. In Eddie's words: Breaking up is hard. Not everyone can be as tough as Bob Dylan, who claims that he needs to "travel on" when his lover wastes his "precious time." Everybody Was In The French Resistance ... Now! have read between the lines, and have rewritten the song based on how Bob Dylan most likely actually felt when he bid "fare thee well." |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Billy's Genes Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A response to the Michael Jackson hit, "Billie Jean", in which a man denies a crazed woman is his lover and that her child is his. It includes lines referring to advice not to "go around breaking young girls' hearts." In "Billy's Genes", that child has grown up and discovered who his father was, and roundly criticises his behaviour of breaking hearts and homes. | |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – The Scarborough Affaire Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A response to traditional folk ballad "Scarborough Fair", probably most famous for the Simon and Garfunkel recording, "Scarborough Fair/Canticle". In that song, the narrator tells a visitor to Scarborough Fair to remind an old lover of him, with lines such as "Tell her to make me a cambric shirt, without no seams nor needlework" and "Tell her to find me an acre of land, between salt water and the sea strand," all followed by "Then she'll be a true love of mine." The French Resistance response acknowledges these requests as ridiculous and unfair on the narrator's ex, who has left him again after his behaviour upon his return of subjecting her to these tests. | |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – (I'm So) Waldo P. Emerson Jones Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A response to "Waldo P. Emerson Jones" by the Archies, in which a smooth, popular guy impresses all the girls and makes everybody else look bad. The response comes from Waldo's perspective: he was once the unpopular kid in school, but spent summer redoing his image, changed his name to Waldo P. Emerson Jones and became the smooth talker from the original song. | |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – Creeque Allies Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A response to "Creeque Alley" by the Mamas & the Papas. The original song describes how the band was formed; this one is a historical rundown of the French Resistance, featuring a quote from one of Dyan Valdes's professors: "Everybody was in the French Resistance, now." | |
| Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now! – G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N. (You Know I've Got A) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A response to Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend", in which Avril sings about stealing another girl's boyfriend. Neither Eddie nor Dyan could stand the song or its message, so it was an obvious pick to answer. | |
| Art Brut – Demons Out! Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think it might be "shouldn't be voting". | |
| Art Brut – DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshake Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Slight mistake in the following verse: I'm in love with a girl in my comic shop She's a girl who likes comics; She probably gets a lot Should be "She probably gets that a lot." |
