Heres my take on it. It's about person A who is now hovering near rock bottom. And is stuck with a life that they once thought worthless. The song switches around two voices ( designated as Person A, and Person B). "I picture you in the sun wondering what went wrong and falling down on your knees asking for sympathy. ......you can believe in" (Pesron B) He remembers how Person A once had it all going for him/her, and wonders what went wrong suggesting that Person A fell to rock bottom, and that what Person A has been through prevents him/her from coming near what he/she once wanted. Person A has become pessimistic and doesn't believe in anything doing anything to make himself/herself feel better. "may gods love be with..... you" Person B is kind of saying he hopes some good luck etc is with Person A because he/she could use it. (Person A) "I don't know anymore.... any more than me." Here Person A asks for help because he does know what to do. Then Person A suggests that the person he/she went for to get help doesn't know anymore how to help then he/she does. (Person A) "may gods.... with you" Person A then hopes that Person B has good luck etc, because if they don't and they hit forck bottom there is nothing that can be done. |

This song to me is kind of a break up/relationship song. He didn't treat the girl very well, hence the lines "Go to church... You're a Good girl... I never told you that". He realizes that he treated her badly and has changed hence the lines, "Kill the messenger. I swear its not me." There is something happening in his life that causes him to not treat her as he should and that is what "the messenger" represents. He is breaking up with her because he can't handle what he is dealing with and keeping her happy at the same time. Hence the lines "This hurts like hell." And "I'm gonna send a little rain to pour down on you Rain that makes the flowers bloom." He believes that even though she will be sad because of the parting it will allow her to create a new better relationship and be happier then before. |

I really love this song, I can really relate to just wanting to run away and search for what I've always wanted. I think the song is more about achieving dreams then running away though. The first stanza's two lines I see as a metaphor for getting up and doing something to achieve what you want, and how you shouldn't stop going for something and should not dwell not he past but create more. It sounds like people are holding him back and just talk about improving themselves and that all the pain they talk about is just imagined because they dwell on it. To me its really about just doing something to reach your dream. |

No I did not notice that the line "at worst the heart is sober" was used in another song, which song was it? I agree with cubby its about someone who takes extreme risks and does what ever she wants. It sounds like a relationship were the couple got really close and realized they were not right for each other, and he just wants her to tell him that and stop pussyfooting around about it, and maybe they don't break up for a while because they follow their hearts desire not to hurt the other even though they don't fell compatible. |

I think this is about people making decisions. The first few lines make me think it is about you going out and doing something enjoyable, and to stop sitting and to start accumulating memories that consist of something other then sitting. And how people focus on stupid things that stop them from doing something they want and how they just need to forget that and do it. |

I think in the first stanza he is celebrating something, IE the 'champagne' reference however he isn't celebrating something that he wanted to do, but something done for others IE the 'we're aiming to please' part. The narrator is angry at someone because of their unforeseen influences IE the 'And my eyes They despise you for who I am' part. The narrator feels he is caught in between what he wants and what people expect of him. He is lost in what to do, and is mad that he feels obligated to do things for others instead of himself. Time keeps going by and the narrator still hasn't found that something for himself, and maybe he wants someone to just tell him to live for himself and forget everyone else. |
