Tim Buckley – Song To The Siren Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm sorry, but you're a crock of shit.
Tim created it with specific intention, and played it as such.
TMC butchers that intention.
I'm sure you just love the thrill of feeling crazy that you get every time you listen to liz. But this song was not meant to drive you crazy, its meant to break you down.
If you like the TMC version better, you do not understand this song.

Tim Buckley – Song To The Siren Lyrics 13 years ago
Okay I love Miss Fraser and all, but the TMC version is NOTHING compared to the original (It actually makes me quite angry). The TMC version has way to much going on, and she butchers the lyrics. The song was written to be quiet and heartbreaking. Liz insists on jumping all over the place with it, but heartbreak is not like that. AT ALL. Heartbreak is deathly quiet, melancholy, even monotonous. This is a depressive song, its meant to make you see the colors washing out of everything, bringing you way down, way down until you can barely move. Liz sings it like the manic she is. Which has its amazing place. But that place is most definitely not in this song.

By the way, I listen to this song every time my stomach begins to sink. It helps. Maybe Thom wrote it so that he could do the same thing.

Thom Yorke – Atoms For Peace Lyrics 13 years ago
Alright, I'm gonna go down a strange path here and talk about Ayn Rand for a second.
In the Fountainhead there is a moment when one of the side characters- a plain, dumb, but determined girl- just fucking freaks out. She is sitting at a desk in her room, sifting through papers, when she suddenly feels this inexplicable terrible presence, that something is after her, that her very life is threatened. She becomes terrified, screams and runs out of the house to the bewilderment of her father.
Now, I've felt this. And it will be impossible to understand for anyone who hasn't. It's that overwhelming feeling you get, and it just comes over you, when suddenly everything is wrong with the world, nothing makes sense, and your life is suddenly pointless. It is NOT a depressive state, or an angry state, or a drug-induced state. It is just this sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, and then terror. A trapped, immovable, intangible terror. I suppose the best commonly understood pop-culture themed explanation would be--- you've just realized that you are a part of the matrix.
Now the point is that when in this state you have quite literally gone insane. Actual reality does not make sense, or it is just awful, so there is nothing anyone in that rejected reality can do or say to help you. (my mother has tried)
Finally, the connection to the song: the wormhole, the flying saucer eyes thats feeling.. the inexplicable terror. Maybe a loved one is feeling it, or himself. Whomever it is, this song is about trying to get out of it.
This feeling, I argue, is the inability for us to accept our lives in their full and outright truths. In moments when we are forced to see our lives as they are we panic. The only way to truly get out of the worm hole, thereby, is to peel of those layers, admit to the lies you tell yourself, and see everything as it is.
Go out, make it work. And it will be okay.

The Dead Weather – Treat Me Like Your Mother Lyrics 16 years ago
this is what i get from the song:

I think that it may be a song about society and how most of it is fake.
"Don't act like you can't act
I know what you think you're doing
You better learn to shake hands
And treat me like your mother"
The reference to the mother i think comes from the fact that society is unavoidable, and you have to learn to abide by its rules, just as you must do with a mother. The part about acting is straight forward, you must learn how to "act" the part in society.
The "play dumb, play dead, play straight" part is again just telling what one must do in society (the "play striaght" part specifically gave me the idea for the whole society theme since "straights" is a common name, or was in the 60's and 70's, for conservatives)
The manipulate parts are simply about how all that society is based around is manipulation.
The "You blink when you breathe And you breathe when you lie" line is saying how everything in society is a lie sine both blinking and breathing are constant and uncontrollable functions of the human body.

The video (if anyone hasn't seen it, its Jack and Allisson shooting eachother basically throught out the whole thing, then them giving up in the end) represents the fight between an individual and society, and how neither can win, instead it is a constant battle between a mother and her rebellious son. The guns may also represent how violent our society is.

Country Joe McDonald – Pat's Song Lyrics 16 years ago
WOW the lack of responses to country joe shocks me, does absolutly no on listen to him? Come on people he's great. Anyway this and Rock Coast Blues are my favorite songs by him. As for it's meaning a nicely written love song is about as deep as i can get it.. maybe with an underlying hippy generation being connected to nature thing going on, but maybe not. With country Joe McDonald i think its hard to tell.

I like all of the explanations. Perhaps the band combined them to make this song.... kind of using the article in the newspaper as a satire about the militaries secret uses of ectasy.

Born Ruffians – This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life Lyrics 16 years ago
Ok, so i could be off base, and just be saying what i want the song to mean, so here is what i think. I think the lyrics are EXTREMLY sarcastic throughout the song, and i think that sarcasm becomes increasingly obvious as the song progresses.
The most obvious sarcasm is found in this verse:
"I need success to be wealthy
I'm hanging on to my simplicity
I need a nice car and nice clothes
Fatter lips and a smaller nose
I need to learn I need to grow
I want to know. No no no no no no no no
I need nice hair, no women
Nice hair, then women. Until then."
Indie bands tend to not be too into shallow thoughts. Especially since this bands name is Born Ruffians, they do not seem to me to be inclined to such thoughts. Overall i think this songs was meant to insult how we live, how we care about shallow, selfish things that don't really matter.
I really love the line "this one's all about my my my" and how the "my my my" part sounds angrier and therefor more sarcastic the second time he says it. I think the chorus pretty much sums up our selfishness with the "my my my" and caring so much about "my philosophy"
The verse about eating and getting girls also stands out to me. "eating, girls, sex" thats an obvious stereotypical way of thought for people (especially young male americans) and therefor was meant was also meant to be taken sarcatically.
Since songs mean something different to everyone i would love to hear what you think of the meaning i derived from this song, so leave responses :]

Weatherbox – The Clearing Lyrics 17 years ago
ok first of all to all the people talking about god and angels.. no. warren has made it very clear that he is not religious so get those ideas out of your head. who ever said this was about a trip i totally agree this band is like totally drugged (still fantastic though)

i think that this song has a native american feel like the rest of the songs on this album. (i could be completely off base) he passed these 10 perfect houses with ten perfect fences... this sounds kind of sarcastic and he actually thought of them as nothing special or even repulsing. and then he went into this clearing in the woods where a white figure came to him show him, at least i think, that is where he should be in the wild or one with nature or whatever. then he destoyed all of the fences showing that they werent right and weent supposed to be there in nature and expressed his content about destroying them by saying that he whistled. give me responses please cause i wanna know what u guys think about this.

k in response to elsa also...
i actually think that "i will not bow to anything, not a puff of smoke or the flash of a turning mirror" i think that when he says a flash of a turning mirror or a puff i think that he means little natural thing that happens that people misunderstand as "god" and he finds it rediculous that people would worship such obviously fake things hence the "i will not bow to anything"

The Matches – To Build A Mountain Lyrics 17 years ago
ok i totally agree with the first comment. This song, to me at least, obviously has an environmental awareness theme to it.

"but to build a mountain you gotta dig a hole" I think this part is explaining how people live with all these luxuries and have these wasteful live and they think its all good but really theyre destroying the environment.

"maybe ethanol is the methadone for oil addiction, maybe we'll all go green in desert shades of camouflage, go ask the bloodhounds if they found the mirage" ok this part is talking about how ethanol is in fact a good way to solve our oil problem, however there are many problems with it. We would have to destroy a lot of land to grow all of the corn crops needed to support an ethanol based power supply. Therefore its saying that most of the things that we have come up with so far to sole our oil addiction cause problems of their own hence the "ask the bloodhounds if they found the mirage"

"maybe the wolf is not the devil, he just plays him on t.v. Maybe Cuban Bay stays leave you less than overjoyed. Ask the fox about progress, he'll list what's been destroyed." i think this part is talking about all the progress we can say we've made eventhough that progress has done little to nothing.

wow why hasn't anyone commented this yet? its an awesome song.
But anyway, i'm pretty sure this song is about the sixties and the vietnam war. The people shouting in unison that are burning their draft cards are obviously the thousands of people that protested the vietnam war.
