Static to the Heart Lyrics
He was struck by static to the heart,
Shot by an appendage from a television tube,
And knowing it meant to be showered with sound,
He became a believer, he became a believer,
And now he's slamming chords,
And leading the crowd ten-thousand strong,
They're shouting in unison, shouting in unison.
And they're burning their draft cards,
And desecrating photographs,
Burnt through the heart by
Static through the heart, static through the heart, static through the...
A man crouches on the street with static in his eyes
And takes it as a sign from the gods up above
To shout from the rooftops and write letters to the government.
He's writing revelations for the showdown.
And now he's slamming chords,
And leading the crowd ten-thousand strong,
They're shouting in unison, shouting in unison:
"Mom and Dad, wake! Wake from your slumber because
We're gonna burn this motherfucker down!
Because sometimes we burn and steal and rape and kill and sacrifice,
Just to remind ourselves that we're still alive."
Static through the heart, static through the heart, static through the heart...

wow why hasn't anyone commented this yet? its an awesome song. But anyway, i'm pretty sure this song is about the sixties and the vietnam war. The people shouting in unison that are burning their draft cards are obviously the thousands of people that protested the vietnam war.
I don't think it's about the Vietnam war. It's about a preacher who riles up some of the populace by preaching the end of the world.
In the context of the impending judgment day style of the album, it only makes sense that there would be a group of extremists such as these. In fact, it even has direct quotes from Beady Eyes.
good point. your explanation does fit very well with the rest of the cd.... when i wrote the comment i had only heard this song and good day. ignoring that my explanation doesnt fit the cd at all, i would like to say that it does kind of make sense :D
