Sorry about the triple copyright info.. What a great song. To me songs like this one transcend mere music and take on a psychic dimension. Like it is heard and translated by a different part of the brain. Hannah says... "Don't be scared to decode". This to me means to not be afraid to examine our fears and problems. Through this examination they will be "erased". Almost a Buddhist philosophy of looking at our negative thoughts (and fears) thus removing the paralyzing power they have held over us. |

| This song is amazing. I love all the imagery Hannah uses with the sewing, stitches, lace, weaving, and knitting. The song is like a tapestry that is created before your eyes. The meanings of love, loss, friendship, and death have never been pieced together so beautifully. All of these things are bonded together with the thread of life. "The spider knows" | |

Lol Ok I admit that my "theory" has some holes in it. I think that the possibility that He broke up with her is a little shaky. I believe the song shows she did love him and it seems that he was showing affection for her as well. Ahhh OK. They were to be married. He was filling her full of love talk that day underneath the bell. He was not lying to her but was just being creative with his compliments. In his eyes hummingbirds really did follow her everywhere she went. Ugly no. She must have been ravishing. They did climb to the top of the Bell Tower. There he was at the window. Looking out... maybe leaning out.. and Out He Went. She didn't push him but was traumatized by what happened. Her Love.. Out The Window. So he is gone and there is a new "love" at the window. She had tried to love this guy but could not. She wants love... the love that she had lost. She was to have been a bride... but now she is but a "Corpse Bride". "Coming at you like some tattered corpse bride Coming at you, so stand aside" So maybe now all men need to beware. She tries to love them but in reality she is meaning to do them harm. To pay "mankind" back for the loss of her true love. "Coming at you from behind Coming at you, all scissors and knives All shadows and lies" Walking straight down the line could very well be referring to walking down the marriage isle. They want to marry her but she has something else planned. |

I beieve that the poor girl has had a prior love affair that turned out badly. She is coming up from behind a new lover but she is thinking about the previous affair. Somebody that she had quite fallen for. She is telling him she does remember that time. He had filled her head with flattery but now she realized that he would say anything.. "It didn't matter if it was true". I think he broke it off with her that day. "And I was never the same That's when everything changed" She now sees the new "lover" standing at the window. "Oh, he's so sweet I want to love him I want it so But when I reach for him Out he goes" She could only have one true love. She tried but this guy was a poor substitute. It was tragic how he was just standing at the window and fell.. all on his own. But of course this poor guy was not the first to have a fall. "And out he goes Out you go" Anyone who has the misfortune to touch her "gashed" heart is in for a nasty fall. That day at the bell tower they had held hands and he had told her flattering tales. They climed the stairs to the top of the tower. Once there he told her he was just joking. He didn't really love her. It had all been just a game. The words ripped through her and in reaction she pushed him out the bell tower window. So how many "befores" there were is unclear. But she does at least leave any future suiters with a warning. "I could say I'm surprised but it wouldn't be true 'Cause it happened last time to the one before you So step away from the gash I'm coming through" |

Interesting Katie. I still think the first part is about Sarima. Even the "she loved him, you know". Their marriage may have been arranged but She Love Him, You Know.. lol The part about folding up his clothes I am sure is Sarima. I think she always kept things ready for his return. I think both Sarima and Elphaba were asking themselves if it is over. They were caught up in something bigger than themselves. Sarima obviously had no control over the situation and the situation got out of hand for Elphaba. I could be dead wrong but I do not see Glinda in this song. I think Glenda was controlled by a spell and had very little clue that she was being used as a pawn. I think Hannah is switching from 3rd to 1st person in the lyrics and that is where the "I" comes from. |

Hannah Fury's Wicked songs are so perfect to the characters in the book. She is true to the characters and further brings them to life. The first part of the song is about the character Sarima. Sarima is Fiyero's wife through an arranged marriage. Although they have children together there never seems to have be great love between them. Marriage was more of a practical matter. Sill Sarima waits for his return. She seems an unquestioning soul and believes what she is told. The second part speaks of Elphaba. The "Wicked Witch of the West". She is guided much more by her determination to break the hold of the corrupt system that governs OZ than by her own feelings and emotions. Still she loved Fiyero and feels guilt and responsibility for his death. They were after all looking for her. She embraces her pain and anger as that is really all she has to hold on to. The final portion is also about Elphaba. There was something that happened that raised her hopes that maybe Fiero was still alive and would return. Her heart hopes this is the case but it was not to be. |
