Joshua Radin – No Envy, No Fear Lyrics 7 years ago
This song always makes me think of the passage in 1 Corinthians people read a lot at religious weddings. “Love is patient, Love is kind, it does not envy it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others...”

Joshua Radin does such a good job in all of his songs of leading listeners to empathize and feel exactly what he’s trying to communicate. In this song he’s encouraging all of us to love one another not simply as an act but as a way of life. Let go of all the ill will you’re holding against anyone and we can all share a better world.

Yeah the word you’re missing is mire. Fantastic song that’s gotten me through some really rough days post-breakup.

Also, I’ve seen different interpretations about the first line of the second verse. I think he’s actually saying “I COULD be who you wanted somewhere down the road...” It suggests the idea that he sees himself improving gradually and at some point he’ll be better but “here and now” all he can do is beg her to let him stay.

Barenaked Ladies – Brian Wilson Lyrics 12 years ago
An excellent song about suburban depression. Steven Page is singing (pretty clearly from personal experience) about what it's like to have all needs met but still feel lost and unfulfilled.

The story of the song is about Page going to a record store and buying a copy of The Beach Boys' Smiley Smile then lying in bed listening to it over and over again. In a depressed funk, he has the epiphany that Brian Wilson (probably the most musically-gifted of the Beach Boys) struggled with things like depression, compulsive eating, and nervous breakdowns but still managed to write some truly incredible music.

So, Page feels like he too can feel gripped by this depression keeping him in bed and can just write it off as "some kind of creative drought." As someone who struggles with depression myself I can understand that feeling of being surrounded by bad thoughts and feelings keeping you down and preventing you from being who and what you want to be.

At a concert this summer, where I first heard Iration they introduced the song like this:

Micah: Everyone, this is a song about something very special to us. Something which I believe is special to all of you too judging by the way you are leaning so far back in your lawn chairs over here.

Crowd: Cheers uncontrollably

Micah: This is a song about smoking weed in the summertime.

Corey Smith – What Happend Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is pretty clearly about a failing marriage. Both the narrator and his wife are miserable and don't quite know how they became so unhappy together (hence the title question: What Happened?)

He's clear to point out that both he and his wife are to blame for what brought them to this point. She's insulted him and resents him while he just drinks away his problems rather than dealing with them. He doesn't know why she won't wear her ring anymore or how she could just abandon their plans for a future together. Meanwhile, she can't understand where the romance went and why he no longer is willing to meet her halfway.

I like to think that the song ends with the two of them working things out. She shows up and finally tells him what's been going on in her head and he responds by saying what's been on his mind. And, like that they accept the fact that neither of them are happy, they don't know where it went wrong, and they don't want to be unhappy anymore.

Crowd: (laughs)

MN: Of course, there's like a whole record's worth of songs that bash her. But, what are you gonna do? Water under the bridge...

Girl in crowd: Does she know?

Matt Nathanson – Suspended Lyrics 13 years ago
The acoustic version he did of this on At the Point is possibly Matt Nathanson's best song. This song seems to sum up everything that Matt was dealing with after Beneath These Fireworks.

Before "Come on Get Higher" came out and catapulted his fame, Matt had been eating shit in the music industry for more than 10 years. His work featured a lot of personal and professional issues that he had to work through when his dreams just weren't coming true. But, this song was the perfect epilogue to that. "Spent all of my life emptied of anthems, bracing for something that never did come" speaks to the fact that he expected some big grandiose event to happen when he "made it" but it just never happened.

But, the song isn't bitter, it's all about being happy with who you are and where you are. He's happy with the woman he has, the fans who have followed him, and the success he's achieved. I find this song inspiring on those mornings when I wake up and realize that life is beautiful and cynicism isn't worth it.

Fortunately for Matt, mainstream success did come and his hard work did pay off in the end so good for you Mr. Nathanson for working hard, loving who you are, and making your dreams come true.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 13 years ago
Wow, this song is basically the story of my life right now. My ex-girlfriend and I went through something similar to what I think Gotye and Kimrba are singing about.

After being together for almost two years, my girlfriend and I broke up. after a lot of pain, guilt, and dishonesty from both of us we realized that "we found that we could not make sense." I felt terrible because I really loved her a lot but realized that neither of us could be happy in the long run unless we were no longer together. At the same time though "I'll admit that I was glad that it was over."

After that, she waited until a time when I wasn't home and my roommates let her in so she could drop off a bag full of all of my stuff. Lumped in with the old clothes of mine she'd taken was every photo of us, an array of trinkets we'd collected throughout our time together, and the gift I had gotten her for our anniversary. The moment I saw the bag, I despised her. Though I had before felt pain and empathy for her before I felt like she "didn't have to cut me off...make out like it never happened and that we were nothing." Even though I no longer loved her I couldn't stand the thought that she was trying to completely erase my memory from her life. Simply because of the breakup she wanted to act like we'd never had any happy memories.

Ultimately, I never wanted to get back together with her. I didn't want her to tell me that she still loved me or make things go back to the way they used to be. The only real consolation was that she wasn't making my life a living hell. She didn't even really clearly hate me that much. Mostly, it was her detachment that made things so difficult. I didn't want her to come back to me "I guess that I don't need that though."

Now, my future will be filled with people, places, and memories that have nothing to do with her. Ultimately, when people ask about her she'll be "just somebody that I used to know."

Beautiful song!

Trapt – Still Frame Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is basically the anthem of my life right now. It is truly beautiful and speaks to basic human nature.

"And every time I think I've finally made it I learn I'm farther away than I have ever been before."
Who doesn't feel that way all the time? Seriously, for every goal you achieve there's 10 new ones that you need to accomplish.

"I see the clock and it's ticking away and the hourglass empty what the fuck do I have to say?"
Watching the clock is the worst thing ever! You look at the nearest clock or calendar thinking that you have plenty of time and then you realize that you're getting older and time passes by faster and faster every moment. And, what can you say? How do you describe a moment like that? Can you put it into words?

"Keep it inside, the image portrayed as if I couldn't stand losing as if I couldn't be saved no way"
We walk around as if everything is ok. We don't want to ever let people know that we felt hurt or powerless because we're afraid that we cannot be saved and don't want to admit that. Ironically, what people usually need is to be saved from themselves which can only happen when they let down the facade and admit that they feel inadequate.

"A small confession, I think I'm starting to lose it. I think I'm drifting away from the people I really need."
When we get in these ruts that we can't describe or deal with we tend to fall away from really important people in our lives. But, those are the very people we need to get out of the vicious cycle that is tearing us apart.

"A small reflection of when we younger, we had it all figured out cause we had everything covered. Now we're old and it's getting harder to see what this future will hold for us, what the fuck are we going to be?"
Every small child is eager to tell you "what I wanna be when I grow up" and even as a teenager or someone in their 20s, people tend to think that they have the rest of their lives basically figured out. Of course, in hindsight it makes sense that there's no way you could prepare for all the things life throws at you but when you're in a rut like this song is describing it seems like you used to know everything and now you don't know anything at all.

"Please help me cause I'm breaking down. This picture's frozen and I can't get outta here."
This ambiguous plea can be any number of things, it could be crying out to God for the answers or asking a close friend, relative, or significant other to come to your rescue. Whoever is hearing this plea seems to understands how the singer feels, that life gets so stuck in place sometimes and ruts can seem inescapable.

"Believe me, I'm just as lost as you."
One of the most inspiring lines ever! It reminds people that feeling this way is common to everyone; even if we can't express it, we all can understand it.

"I'm afraid I'm falling farther away, I'm falling farther away I'm falling farther from where I want to be."
Life gets tougher and tougher when we hold things like this inside and before long, we look in the mirror and don't like what we see and things only get more out of reach.

This song is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It captures so much about the things that bring us down but also reminds us that we are not alone. Everyone feels this way at some time or another.

Don McLean – Castles In The Air Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think it's fair to say that 1971 was a "less shallow time" than today is. Sure, a lot has changed over the past 40 years but human nature has always remained consistent. I think that's why a song like this sticks so well today long after it was first written.

Matt Nathanson – To The Beat Of Our Noisy Hearts Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song! I always skipped over it when I first got the album but recently I can't stop listening to it.

I think the song is clearly told from the perspective of a guy who is looking at this girl and her outlook on life. He admires the fact that she "don't wait to begin" and likes her adventurous spirit in "skating where the ice thins."

The next verse talks about her relationship with others. Her mom likes to keep a tight lid on her daughter's escapades (she was her mother's secret) but she still is "daddy's girl" so her choices in life are not the result of not having a positive male figure in her life. I think her mother's unwillingness to talk about her daughter is because this girl sleeps around a lot. To an outsider looking in, she's "a slut" for "bringing weekend boys home." But, the narrator knows better. This girl just thinks that she has too much love and too much energy to not enjoy life. "My love is a fever, come on touch my skin." She isn't oblivious to what other people think, she realizes that "they all think I'm easy." But, she wasn't forced into some life of submission to others. Instead, she is empowered by her experiences. "I'm easy cause I let them win"-Such a powerful line!

Finally, in the last verse the girl has called this narrator in desperation. He's watched her living a wild life, hooking up with other guys while he's been cast aside. But, in her time of need she calls on him because "Your voice drives me crazy." But, she chooses him in the end and that has to say something.

Quick correction:

You have-

It's all a game of this or that
Now verses then
Better off against worse for wear

But, it sounds to me like he's saying-

It's all a game of this or that
Now versus them
Better off against worse for wear

"versus" makes more sense since it's followed by "better off against" Maybe I'm wrong but it's just what I've noticed.

Eric Hutchinson – Rock & Roll Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is really about lack of identity. Both of them are defined by the people they surround themselves with. The boy goes to clubs and drinks fancy things to fit in with the "in-crowd" while the girl dresses up "the same" as all the other girls to look more attractive. Neither of them really is comfortable with themselves and would rather act like something else. For them, it's ok to let their lives be influenced by others as long as they FEEL like they're in control.

I think it's ironic that the song culminates with the two of them having sex. Both of them are trying to get with someone who is in the crowd they want to be in and instead they "fall in bed" with someone who feels just as much like an outsider. I can't tell if it's a sweet romantic act that they've discovered someone just like themselves to be with or if it's tragically flawed since they'll just waste the opportunity on "cheap romance".

One thing gets me. I know it's a strech but could it be possible that the two people in this song are virgins? The line "nothing to lose cause they both are winning" makes me think of a refrence to losing their virginity, and the idea would fit with the theme of them feeling like outsiders and trying some feeble attempt to be like everybody else.

Guster – Demons Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is very interesting. He's obviously lying to make himself look better. He hides behind it because he feels like he needs to do it even though he's being terrible to people. "I find the need to be the demon a demon cannot be hurt." He's not apologizing for it all though he's taking pride in it "honest is easy, fiction's where genius lies" but he also says that "it's easier sometimes not to be involved." He's walking through life hiding his true self behind a web of lies.

Ultimately, I think this is a great song with an excellent melody and lyrics with real substance that are applicable to everyone.

Well, Christian music doesn't always have to be directly about God. This song isn't about how he really likes the girl because she's a Christian. Hawk Nelson – Eggshells Lyrics 15 years ago
Such an awesome song! I personally think that it's about a guy and a girl who have been together for a while and have tried to avoid talking about the important things in their relationship. He recently had an outburst and offended her by saying how he really felt. This song is his way of apologizing for hurting her but still saying "I said it, and in a way I don't regret it." He's sick of ignoring the important issues and "walking on eggshells" instead of saying how they really feel.

This song means a lot to me. My brother introduced me to this song and to Nickel Creek in general. He insits that the song is about the singer's experience with a girl. Personally, I think "she" is refering to adulthood and life in general. I just started college this year and was fairly firghtened when I was away from my family. I considered going back and saw several people who retreated into their home cocoons whenever they could. But, eventually I realized that, as scary as the real world is, there's so many great experiences to enjoy and being frightened by growing up is just a silly waste of time.

Matt Nathanson – Curve Of The Earth Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about a guy whose heart was recently broken. He still had feelings for her but tried to get over it. Right as he felt like he could get through it, she came back and asked if they could get back together. Despite his intense feelings, he realized once the offer was there that he didn't want it. He criticized her immaturity and saw how strong of a person he was for saying "no."

Line by line it's like this:

I tried to come down from you
Tried with your voice in my head
Knocking me back
Every inch I move

He just had his heart broken and every time he thought he was over her, the memory of her voice caused him to sulk once more.

I'm a sucker for a good lie
The way you say you understand
And how you always talk of catching me
But never open up your hands

He's fallen for the tricks before and realized that this girl was all talk and would never put herself on the line for his sake.

I know you're here to catch your breath
But I'm not listening for the right words anymore
I'll take what's left

She came back to him because she felt lonely and vulnerable but he long ago realized that there were no easy fixes and they couldn't just "go back to the way things were."

You're vicious like the blue sky
Right before the rain comes pouring through

For a long time, I didn't understand the irony of this line. Blue skies aren't really vicious at all and rain doesn't really make things clear. But, the man in the song learned that this girl's attitude is one that makes everything seem OK even though things are stormy beneath the surface.

Tell me does he look like me at all
Cause there are an awful lot like you

Perhaps the deepest statement made in any Matt Nathanson song if not the deepest in the whole of modern music. He's insinuating that she's been with other guys and wants to know if seeing them is what made her miss him. Simultaneously, he confirmed that the girls he'd seen during their time apart made it impossible for him to see anyone and not think of her.

Tell me does the world revolve the same
Tell me do the people all take care of you
Did you doubt the curve of the earth
And every word I bet you heard

He challenged what she was saying. He asked her if she just assumed that the world would change for her. Rather than embrace the freedom of being single after breaking his heart, she felt scared and lonely and hoped that his mind would change and allow her another chance. Instead, he was strong and told her that they both were part of their own worlds and he wouldn't change his to fit her in after the pain she'd caused.

This is the definitive Matt Nathanson song. I don't personally think it's his best and it isn't necessarily my favorite but it has all the elements necessary to make a good Matt Nathanson song. The song works with a full band or solo on acoustic guitar, is lyrically deep but not hard to understand, and it is full of spite and anger mixed with the redemptive powers found in life.

Matt Nathanson – More Than This Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is one of Matt Nathanson's most symbolic songs. It seems like this song has to do with losing loved ones by pursuing success. He starts out opening up his arms and proclaiming that he's her guy but then realizes that he's been selfish for a while now. It's then revealed that something drastic has changed their relationship as he feels that she's needlessly judging him and listening to her friends rather than formulating her own opinions. She tells him that he's basically a salesman (I think the original lyric might be "you're a salesman, son" not "salesman's son") pimping pretty junk. He's been taking his own mess of a life and making it appear peaceful and serene trying to move on so he can get some money, pocket some success, and move on to the next victims of his pursuits.

Then the fight begins. She tells him that they need to be apart. He becomes defensive, saying that he's going after the money and fame because of her. That he's doing it all to make sure that she can be happy. She responds by telling him to look at himself and who he has become. She doesn't see him as the innocent cute boy that she fell in love with and instead thinks of him as cruel and worldly.

The bridge involves Matt Nathanson saying "I'm tired of baring my teeth when I smile" a line which is obscure because it doesn't say who says it. It's almost as if they're saying it in unison. That they both feel like their characters are being attacked and they can't deal with it the way it is now.

Ultimately, this is a song about the last fight before a relationship ends. I think all of us have been there before. Where both people want things to work out but someone has to say that it just isn't so. That there are no magic words that will whisk all problems away, and someone has to act up and say that the two people in the relationship deserve more than this.

I think he's using the term "bent" to imply that his ex-girlfriend told him to "Get bent!"

She was being a bitch to him and so he ended the relationship because he didn't feel like he was good enough. She came back apologizing but he didn't forgive her. He instead hopes that she'll just be sorry about it forever. If you listen to this live on the album At The Point you can hear him ending the song with the chorus from "Such Great Heights". It's a longshot but I think that might have been "their song" (him and the girl in this song).

The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics 17 years ago
As others have pointed out the Bus Mall is a section of Portalnd with streets strictly reserved for buses which attracts many vagrants. I like Colin's use of his enviornment to convey a point. Really, this song could be set anywhere that homeless people gather.

The story follows a couple of teenage runaways who once dreamt of a happy free life but instead found themselves in the slums and doing whatever was necessary to survive. This includes male prostitution and fixing games of pool. They daily face a cruel, unforgiving world but realize that they have each other.

When I first heard the song I thought it was about a guy and a girl but I began to realize it is likely about two guys. I think that actually makes the relationship more meaningful. A couple would stay together because of their love for one another but to have such a closeness with another man is something that few men ever experience. They aren't gay. They're whoring themselves to make money but they aren't lovers. They have a close bond which is unbroken even by the world they live in. Their's is a love that goes deep and so they affirm one another and take on the whole world together.

The Decemberists – Odalisque Lyrics 17 years ago
This is the darker side of Sublime's "Wrong Way". I never thought I would find a song with more graphic undertones than the "Anti-prostitute anthem" which Sublime concocted. Odalisque is the daughter of a negligent mother and an absent father. She is somewhere between 15 and 18 years old and supports her "lazy" mother as a prostitute. One night she is depressed (go figure) and she stands at the edge of a high fire escape threatening to jump. She thinks about getting down but realizes that all that would await her is her same miserable life. The song is a cliffhanger as it doesn't mention which way she took to get down from the fire escape.

The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect Lyrics 17 years ago
This song always struck me as being about someone whose heart has been broken. "Guess it's better to turn this way."

To escape from the sad life that he is in he lets his mind wander. Much like "Billy Liar" the narrator embarks on Walter Mitty-like fantasies. He seems sad and remarks that it is her loss because he is a heroic soldier, an artistic architect, and a womanizing Spaniard. But, ultimately his other lives won't work for him "Try one and try two" and he turns from one unfufilling fantasy world to another and eventually faces reality.

This song really helped me after a recent breakup. While I convinced myself that my life would be grand after the relationship I had to face the truth of what was in store for me. My life couldn't be a fantasy and I had to take what the real world was going to throw at me.
