To The Beat Of Our Noisy Hearts Lyrics
she don't lie in bed at night
staring at the ceiling
she don't wait to begin
she bets on long shots
she wants what they've got
she skates where the ice thins
and on and on
we keep going
crowded like subway cars
on and on
to the beat of our noisy hearts
she was her mothers secret
she was daddy's girl
she brought weekend boys home in her curls
she said my love is a fever
come on touch my skin
they all think I'm easy
well I'm easy 'cause I let them win
and on and on
we keep going
crowded like subway cars
on and on
to the beat of her noisy heart
(of her heart)
and at worst the heart is sober
and at its worst the heart is free
come say it to my face
I'm holding back again
and I'm already gone, gone
she said pick up the phone
'cause I need to get more alone
your voice drives me crazy
and on and on
we keep going
crowded like subway cars
on and on
to the beat of our her heart
and on and on
we keep going
crowded like subway cars
on and on
to the beat of our noisy hearts
staring at the ceiling
she don't wait to begin
she wants what they've got
she skates where the ice thins
we keep going
crowded like subway cars
on and on
to the beat of our noisy hearts

No I did not notice that the line "at worst the heart is sober" was used in another song, which song was it? I agree with cubby its about someone who takes extreme risks and does what ever she wants. It sounds like a relationship were the couple got really close and realized they were not right for each other, and he just wants her to tell him that and stop pussyfooting around about it, and maybe they don't break up for a while because they follow their hearts desire not to hurt the other even though they don't fell compatible.
The title line, "to the beat of our noisy hearts", gives me such a sense of hope and joy. It makes me think of running around with the person you love. Matt Nathanson is a genius.
This is about a girl who's a go-getter. She makes things happen for herself rather than sitting idly by and letting the world come to her.
I think "noisy heart" just means she's free-spirited.
Someone help me with the final couple of verses. I have no idea.
I think the final verses refer to how she can't maintain a long relationship. She's too independent and can't stay tied down. On and on ...
Did anyone notice that the line "at worst the heart is sober" is used in another of Matt Nathanson's songs?
I think, "To the Beat of our Noisy Hearts" Means We're always talking about everything and everyone, we gossip. But this girl doesn't care, she doesn't lie in bed at night thinking about it like other people, shes to independent for that.
this is one of my favorite songs ever. ive only known of matt nathanson for a few months and i love him. normally im not into slower acoustic type stuff that he does but i love him and his music. hes such an amazing writer and alot of his songs are really inspirational an what not. but this song seems to be pretty much what everyone has said. theres this girl and shes very free spirited and indepandant and a risk taker. she really doesnt give much care to what other people think. and she cant last in relationships for too long because of her independance. basically thats it. and her heart is very crowded like a sub way cuz she kinda has relationships with alot of people. no one really said that yet but comment back with wat you think.
I saw him in concert three times and one of the times he performed this song he said it was about "Curly Haired Girls." I think this was an experience he had with a free-spirited, rebellious girl
I love this song! I always skipped over it when I first got the album but recently I can't stop listening to it.
I think the song is clearly told from the perspective of a guy who is looking at this girl and her outlook on life. He admires the fact that she "don't wait to begin" and likes her adventurous spirit in "skating where the ice thins."
The next verse talks about her relationship with others. Her mom likes to keep a tight lid on her daughter's escapades (she was her mother's secret) but she still is "daddy's girl" so her choices in life are not the result of not having a positive male figure in her life. I think her mother's unwillingness to talk about her daughter is because this girl sleeps around a lot. To an outsider looking in, she's "a slut" for "bringing weekend boys home." But, the narrator knows better. This girl just thinks that she has too much love and too much energy to not enjoy life. "My love is a fever, come on touch my skin." She isn't oblivious to what other people think, she realizes that "they all think I'm easy." But, she wasn't forced into some life of submission to others. Instead, she is empowered by her experiences. "I'm easy cause I let them win"-Such a powerful line!
Finally, in the last verse the girl has called this narrator in desperation. He's watched her living a wild life, hooking up with other guys while he's been cast aside. But, in her time of need she calls on him because "Your voice drives me crazy." But, she chooses him in the end and that has to say something.
I think, like everyone else this is about an independent woman 'she don't lie in bed at night, staring at the ceiling, She don't wait to begin'
Who can hold her own in the world and never shows her vulnerability 'she skates where the ice thins'
And her family don't accept her because she's looking for the man of her dreams and has many boyfriends 'she was her mothers secret, She was daddy's girl, She brought weekend boys home in her curls'
The guy singing the song is fed up with her because she doesn't tell him her feelings and tries to leave 'come say it to my face I'm holding back again and I'm already gone, gone
But as much as she dislikes showing her vulnerability through her feelings she wants to speak to him "she said pick up the phone"
But she knows this will only push them further away because she can't show her feelings 'cause I need to get more alone your voice drives me crazy"
