Fair to Midland – Whiskey & Ritalin Lyrics 14 years ago
It seems like it's...about some sort of plane crash. 9-11 immediately comes to mind, but I don't think that would be it...

I also get cyberpunk/sci-fi vibes, although that could just be the story I'm working on doing that.

I just really love the riff. Very pirate-y. This song's really, really fun to listen to.

On a more serious note, I'm wondering if this song's about the hypocrisy in the so-called right-wing american patriotism.

Being loud about "supporting our troops" but then being more concerned about your appearances than actually, you know, supporting the troops, is the impression I'm getting.

Another idea: serial killer. Kills children. Children familiar to serial killer. From the perspective of a bystander, perhaps a relative or close friend, hence the "I told you so".

@Purplefluff:

It's called comedy. Yes, it is funny, and you need to not take everything written on this site as seriously as you do.

And on-topic, I thought the song was about suicide at first, but it didn't quite mesh with the rest of the lyrics. So I went here and yeah, the "become my own person" thing definitely is what the song is about.

Fair to Midland – As I Was Traveling... Lyrics 16 years ago
the verses seem to use a car crash as a metaphor for human nature. the bridge is probably talking about how emotions build up and people just hold it in, because they're afraid of being ridiculed etc. Not too sure on the refrain, though it seems to point to people always feeling every action in their consciences "he looks in the mirror, for it's always telling the truth", "here come the locusts again", etc., and likens the conscience to Tiresias[sp? i didnt scroll back up to check]

not sure on the last bridge though, with the "tacks as jewelry"

i've noticed that Darroh's diction's improved quite a bit :)

but anyway

I think this song is about someone who was in love with someone, and then the first person's trying to get the other person, and is frustrated because he keeps doing something wrong, and it eventually turns out that perhaps he is out to kill this person?

something...like that?

Fair to Midland – Beto II Lyrics 16 years ago
I'll go line-by-line, but the abridged version is something along the lines of how a kid is deemed a criminal because one[or both] of his parents are in jail and decides to inadvertently prove them right.

reach. go on.

hands don't match
go and find the bars that make us hunger[this is perhaps the parents telling the kid something in hopes that he understands why they're in prison?]
maybe with knots and uniforms[maybe other kids are making fun of the POV character, saying if he wants to be closer to his parents, become a prison guard]
and if i may add,
well i've got a big gun
and i know just who i'm gonna use it on
maybe it'll make for the better.[the kid then retorts that he has a gun, and he knows how to use it, and that he'll shoot certain people]

the beggar always has his strength
his ambition is tapped[the kid is easily manipulated because of his hunger for (his parents') attention?]
always occupied on the john[he hides in the bathroom because he is bullied a lot]
while he's there let's take advantage.[so eventually the bullies catch on]

we are not the bringers of second chances gone within a moments notice[not sure what this line means]
and if it's genetic then i'll be fed through those same bars
how appropriate.[the kid muses on how all these scientists keep talking about criminals being genetically criminal, and if this is all true, then he has no choice in whether or not he becomes like his parents in prison]

days in march
go, leave us in debt and always hoping
maybe in ten more years i'll know him[the kid misses his parents, and the parents feel the same way...and neither feel like they know each other]
and if i may add
well I've got a big syringe
to show to all my close friends
maybe i'll upgrade near the kiddies[the kid starts doing drugs to look tough and perhaps because of his lonliness, and shows off whatever drugs he's doing in order to project this image]

i'm still because i'm frozen[again, not sure what this line could mean]

Hmm...I love this song. Let's get that out of the way ;)

But really, I feel like Darroh was trying to draw parallels between the story of Moses and the Story of Jesus...perhaps making snide comments every now and then.

Do with this seed what you will, I like to see where things go.

Fair to Midland – ..(i).. Lyrics 16 years ago
I've noticed how a lot of people seem to be getting all these religious vibes from songs, and I guess that could be some of what's going on....but i'll keep this general and tentative and bland and let other people take it from here.

This song strikes me as someone who's sacrificed everything for someone else, and wants to know what they're getting in return. Perhaps a parent for a child? The only line i can't make any heads or tails of is "saw a branch, fell in a brook"

But what it feels like is a selfish child demands everything from the parent, and the parent gladly and willingly gives, but then maybe the child demands too much, and leaves the parent wondering where they went wrong??

That's what I've got.

Fall Out Boy – She's My Winona Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm wondering if it's about all this war and stuff going on in Iraq and that general region.

Life is just the pacecar of death
only less diligent[basically any phrase ending in 'only less dilligent' probably have something to do with 'life always cheats you or rips you off or surprises you in nasty ways']
and when the two collide[2 opposing forces? like in a war?]
it's no coincidence[it was meant/bound/obvious for it to happen]
the lights are on and everybody's home[everytime casualties are reported, everybody rushes home to make sure that it's not THEIR son who got themselves killed]

The only thing suicidal here is the door[hmm. i'm wondering if that's referencing the door or 'opportunity' of war, and how daft and stupid that would be when there's a better 'door' waiting to be opened]
We had a good run
even i have to admit[basically saying that it was worth it, despite the narrator's objections]
Life's just a pay stub on debt
Only less diligent[like i said before, i think it's talking about how much life SUCKS]

Hell or Glory[pretty obvious what this means]
I don't want anything in between[don't wanna settle for a mediocre life/death.]
Then came a baby boy with long eyelashes[new meat? long eyelashes = weak, effiminate, not manly? or even gay, like you said?]
Daddy said you gotta show the world the thunder[i wonder if it's making 'daddy' a perversion of 'uncle sam', and even using it as a metaphor for propaganda, and the 'show the world the thunder' bit could be another metaphor for propaganda!
The thunder, the thunder, the thunder

We didn't come to compete
this is a demonstration[how war is public, or will end up that way, and the previous line is saying, "Move over, pansies" i think. so to speak. xD]
even the young ones become irrelevant [all's fair in love and war, anyone?]
they always bring up how you changed[children always see the truth of things]
never the same person when I go to sleep
as when I wake up, as when I wake up[war changes people?? something like that?]

that was actually pretty quick for my usual line-by-line commentary... o.O...

I'm not sure why, but no matter what i do, I can't help but think of this song as sort of referencing some of the stories about/from the bible[or about Jesus. Probably gonna get flamed for it. xD oh well.].

Hmm, the only specific I'm awake enough to actually go into:

"And though the crane is gone I see my way." - The only way this line makes sense in the context I'm using is if it's talking about the Bird kind of crane, or the verb[craning one's neck to see] kind. "And though the [bird/guide?]" or "And though the [fact that I'm twisting/stretching my neck to see"

guess that's it for now.

I'm goin' to bed. 'night peeps.

Fair to Midland – (Tibet) Dance of the Manatee Lyrics 17 years ago
I keep turning this over in my head, and keep coming up with the same conclusion, although admittedly it’s similar to half of what everyone else is reasoning. But I’ll try to put it in detail.

Take a little dive into the shallow or spy what do you see?[Look at our society just under the surface.]

I see the tortoise and the hare in a rat-race and it fits like a glove under my sleeve, just wait till then.[The first part “tortoise and hare in rat-race” is a fairly obvious metaphor i think. Then “fits like a glove under my sleeve” has a mildly sexual undertone for some reason. Probably just my dirty mind i guess. “Just wait till then” is referencing the tortoise winning in the end, “slow/steady wins the race” type-deal.]

Their heads are the heaviest in operation,[“Heaviest” is possibly a reference to a one-track mind or a lack of smarts. “heads” and “operation” refer to, resp., the mind, and how it works.]

he has still not lost imagination.[ I can never quite grasp any sort of context besides sexual. If you can, explain it to me please.]

You can hear him mouth the whole ending –[Once again, sexual context for me. I think it’d be ridiculously funny if this means something along the lines of talking dirty about exactly what they’re going to do in bed, and how much you’re going to enjoy it. Something like that. XD]
just wait till then.

We Marys had ourselves a ball.
Oh, yes we did.
We Marys had ourselves a ball,
I must admit—
[As previously stated, “mary” is a slang term for a prostitute. Probably from Mary Magdalene, who was a prostitute. SO: The prostitutes are simply admitting they enjoy what they do, more than likely.]

Hang us those limbs hold no virtue. [“Mary” is also the name of Jesus’ mother. So possibly in an indirect double meaning sort of way, Darroh is referencing how Catholics during the reign of Elizabeth I were prosecuted and put to death, and also how the majority of society tends to ignore/look down at Prostitutes.]

Those told to hold: project on my cue until we fall.[Those told to hold (virtue), project(I’ll go out on a limb and say that in this context, project means “tossed”) on my “cue”(signal), Until we fall. Which means that they are raised, as if they were being hanged. And when they die, they are dropped to the ground.]

Whether a he or a she, put your mouth where your money is.[Another reference to prostitution. Also, there are apparently a vast number of prostitutes that happen to be transvestites. So, uh, yeah.]

Are the birds of a feather that clever?[“Birds of a feather” could be referencing prostitutes, and asking if they are all really that “clever”, or good in bed.]

If I knew I'd keep locks, that's a given, just wait till then.[Locks of hair, I presume. Hate saying it, but probably saying that there are people in love with prostitutes.]

Their heads cast shadows like skyscrapers.[they’re everywhere, and you simply have to look and see their shadow.]
Small enough to fit up their asses, [but they’re at the same time unnoticeable with casual observance. I won’t mention any of the many sexual references this could be referencing.]

to put it all into perspective with definition.[to put it into “perspective”, and make it mean something. Not too sure on this.]

Oh, take a gander the bigger they are the harder they fall.[-too lazy to really explain a well-known saying.]

Not needy you'll see, not needy[possibly saying the prostitutes aren’t begging for money, or that they shouldn’t be seen as desparate for money.]
and I come with open arms over trees.[and it’s possibly saying “And here I am, practically handing you money on a silver platter.” Of course using “Money tree” as my point –of-ref.]
Not needy you'll see .

Listen to proven guarantees while you're rolling up your sleeves,
beating on your chest.[Not going into the infinite number of things the phrase “proven guarantees” could possibly mean, The lines are referencing a mob, riot, protest, etc.]

But we can keep it in a jar when it's coming cats and dogs for days.[“I’ve got a jar of dirt!”(that aside, “We can keep” a lid on our anger while there are more pressing matters. (“rain on your parade”?) ]

Hmm

From what I can guess, maybe this song is referring to the commander of a military operation who refuses to back down on his plan, and possibly his batallion disagrees with it.

That's just a first impression, mind you.

[actually, in gaining one the vocals just keep building on top of each other at the end. Which is possibly one of the coolest sounds i have heard in music. I think in this song, they're simply overlapping rather than actually being layered.]

"And there we go instead a tease that mocks the beggar"

I'm wondering if this song is a[twisted] parody of "Romeo and Juliet" and possibly "The Prince and the Pauper."

There are two lines that make me think this.

"Substitute rain with some poison and drink to the sequel." - I don't think i need to really explain this. amirite?

and:

"Hold me. No, not you, but the other. The one with the rags on." -see? xD

Um.

I really really like this song musically, and another thing is that it really kind of sounds like a weird love story. *shrug*

Fall Out Boy – The Take Over, the Breaks Over Lyrics 17 years ago
HEHEHE. I haven't doen any sort of epic thing on FOB yet.... *rubs hands together*

Luckily, I like dissecting things.

Baby, seasons change but people don't.[people dont change over time. DUH.]
And I'll always be waiting in the back room.[saying how he'll always be there in the back of her mind or is patient and can wait for her to get done with her 'real' life and such.]
I'm boring but overcompensate with
Headlines and flash, flash, flash photography.[so i'm wondering if perhaps the narrator is a celebrity, or even a papparazzi himself 8D]

But don't pretend you ever forgot about me.
Don't pretend you ever forgot about me.[self-explanatory, i think.]

Now here's the tricky part, me explaining the refrain in my word-by-word way.

Wouldn't you rather be a widow than a divorcee?[Wouldn't you rather have me dead( she being a widow) than alive(she knows that there's a chance he could ruin her life a second time)?]
Style your wake for fashion magazines.[Here's the tricky part. I believe that in this context, "Wake" means "legacy, trail, etc.". So a wake/legacy could be a child. And 'style' would be raise. And 'fashion magazines' could be 'high society.' In a nutshell, "Raise/prepare your/our children for high society."]
Widow or a divorcee?[dead, or alive?]
Don't pretend, d-d-d-don't pretend.[not going to go into this again.]

We don't fight fair.
We don't fight fair.[um. not going to attempt to explain what I think is obvious...again...]

They say your head can be a prison.[as in, 'her' head is a trap, that you'll get caught in a web of deception if you go after 'her']
Then these are just conjugal visits.[conjugal relates to marriage. SO: any instance of them being seen together is in order to keep their marriage intact in the eye of the public, when they really just don't want anything to do with each other]
People will dissect us till
This doesn't mean a thing anymore.[as in, what little 'chemistry/love/whatever' they've got left will be taken apart and split until you cant see what it really is.]

Don't pretend you ever forgot about me.
Don't pretend you ever forgot about me.

Wouldn't you rather be a widow than a divorcee?
Style your wake for fashion magazines.
Widow or a divorcee?
Don't pretend, d-d-d-don't pretend.

[skipping this, since I already explained it]

and now, another weird, word-by-word commentary for the part that I haven't had much of a chance to look at. anything else familiar I wont even touch since I already explained it. duh.

We do it in the dark with smiles on our faces.['it', given that it's fob, probably refers to the nasty ;D. So, I believe it means that "We still do it, but in secret, and we smile because we can forget about everything for a moment, for a moment of bliss.' I guess.]
We're dropped and well concealed in secret places.[i believe dropped could mean 'forgotten' in this case. So... "Wev'e forgotten ourselves, and we meet in places only we know about to get our moment of bliss.]
We do it in the dark with smiles on our faces.
We're dropped and well concealed in secret places
We don't fight fair.
We don't fight fair.
We don't fight fair.
We don't fight fair.
We don't fight fair.

We do it in the dark with smiles on our faces.
We're dropped and well concealed in secret places, woah.
We do it in the dark with smiles on our faces.
We're dropped and well concealed in secret places.
We don't fight fair.
With smiles on our faces.
We're dropped and well concealed in secret places.
We don't fight fair.

Don't pretend you ever forgot about me.
We don't fight fair.
Don't pretend you ever forgot about me.
We don't fight fair.

SO. UM. YEAH.

I'm probably trying not to get too into the whole 'stop labeling us as a scene band' interpretation, cause EVERYBODY does that for EVERY SONG form IOH. ROFL.

-val.

Fair to Midland – Gaining One Lyrics 17 years ago
This is, for me, probably my favorite song. I don't know why, though.

Over all, I think this song is about a love affair gone wrong. :9

anyway[time for the usual epic line-by-line approach, eh?]

North Star, bring luck.[wishing on a star, for luck. I imagine.]

Call the nurse, I'm dropping in anchor.[
Making stops at the pass.[this line I think could be talking about awkward flirting, a play on 'making a pass']
Caught in the mix of the two with an offer[perhaps caught in the middle of an affair/relationship, and is asked out by one of the two.]
Left with three times the guilt.[I think this could be looking back in hindsight. Explained later in the epicness]

please don't decide to roll your eyes
i'm speaking from my heart[I think this is talking about a nervous love confession.]
she bought a book and now she's
reading much more into things[Perhaps ‘she’ started to take greater notice of things when he made his confession. *shrug*]
dear searched and found now little[Looked for the chemistry, but can’t find enough for it to work, but he still wants it to work.]
hanging on your every word[listening to every word with a wary ear?]
(purchased more than gained at will)[perhaps forced into bribery, rather than getting a reciprocation unaided?]
please don't decide to roll your eyes
i'm speaking from my heart

littles known of the heart breaking silence
causing loss before peals[Perhaps the person he confessed to died before they could be married, like the peals of wedding bells?]
jerking through the side winding admission[Feeling numb and trying to admit she’s gone?]
and gathered berries in bed[getting into another affair. I believe the ‘gathered berries’ is a twist on the term ‘popping a cherry’??]

take it i left it[all yours now.]
slipped and stored in vain[His veneer slipped, and he tried to store those memories away again?]
held by the mischief[fascinated with the idea of keeping everybody in the dark about his true feelings.]
with one still left to blame[Blamed everybody exept himself for something, or what happened.]

a flow, a flow in store.[possibly...he’s going to have to deal with it, and cries/sobs when he does, and it is inevitable?]

left with an angel
until the sirens rang.[it was all a dream. ‘Sirens’ is probably a reference to the blare of an alarm clock.]

Well, here’s my explanation of “Left with three times the guilt”. I believe that he feels guiltier than he should, because he used some underhanded method to get what he wanted, and can’t take back what he did.

I think I agree with Gole. Perhaps it's also from conflicting pov's, too. o.O idk, but that's how it seems.

Glow but don't shine[I agree, it's talking about not forcing it upon the people and letting them come of their own accord.]
A fuse for a blueprint, devices my hands built.[I think this is kind of from God's pov, saying how the fuse is like the spark that starts the 'devices' or people that he made.]
For these roads want the rain and my raincoat,
drown in the flash flood.[have very little clue as to what this means, although 'flash flood' could be talking about Satan/the Devil's tirade.]

For we are alive,[as in, we will live forever. Alive.]
given air and not used to alfresco.[I think this is
Does the sun know that today I forgot the zeros and ones?[I actually think that maybe asking if the sun/son(as andrew LOVES wordplay) knows that the narrator forgot the 0s and 1s, or the binary code, or what makes most computers run, and comparing himself to a computer, and his spirit the program]
Told you to conquer the rush and on Sunday I remembered paper beats rock.[Perhaps it's god reprimanding him and talking about conquering temptation. Paper beats rock is saying how the scripture/bible/holy spirit defeats materialistic, earthly things, and inadvertently Satan.]
Reached a mile high if I reached a foot.

Leopard skin is not above or beyond him, he's no more a prince than a frog is.
For these roads should not have shed for a witness,
taken bites to avenge us.[agree again with gole on this verse]

For we are alive,
given air and not used to alfresco.
Does the sun know today I forgot the zeros and ones?
Told you to conquer the rush.
Sunday I remembered paper beats rock.
Reached a mile high if I reached a foot.

I'm figuring out the one thing he's not is above or beyond,[I believe it's the narrator realizing that whatever he was following isn't god, or perhaps referencing the anticrhist, using 'above and beyond' as a metaphor for heaven.]
And no one's passing on, taking off, or waving good-bye, for we are alive.[Nobody's dying. Everybody's living forever, in heaven. ]

Today, I forgot the zeros and ones.
Told you to conquer the rush.
Sunday I remembered paper beats rock.
Reached a mile high if I reached a foot.

[[Actually, this song is also what makes me suspect that perhaps andrew is a closet christian. Or something. :9 It amuses me for some reason. ]]

Fair to Midland – (When The Bough Breaks) Say When Lyrics 17 years ago
I actually beg to differ. I think it could be referring to the war in Iraq and the media's reaction/coverage of it.

The sideways man
walks on his hands[I believe it could be talking about a wounded & handicapped veteran.]
can't keep from dragging his feet
and when he tries
I try[Here, Darroh(or a narrator) is talking about how he feels the veteran's pain in trying to walk, hence 'dragging his feet' from the physical therapy to regain use of his legs.]
They twist his arms
to get a headstart['twist his arms' could mean threatening, and 'they' could be the military. 'get a headstart' would be the military's keeping ahead of the game, making sure nobody knows what's really going on. (then again, I'm slightly biased on this subject)]
Tycoons love hitting
the jackpot[Tycoons = big media companies like CNN, MSNBC, etc. So the jackpot would be the idea of getting EVERYTHING, coverage-wise on Iraq in general.]
To get back what they've lost
he'd have to raise the bar[Here, 'they' could be talking about the people 'he'(the aforementioned veteran) had trained with and bunked with in Iraq, and what they've lost are their companions that died in battle, or perhaps their humanity.]

The desert heat left us all in the dark[In the excitement of being able to cover Iraq, the media didn't realize what they were getting themselves into, and had no clue what was coming, so they essentially also left US citizens in 'the dark' on what was going on.]
buried the sun so I carried the torch[The media 'buried' the sun, the US citizens' ideals, so the narrator/darroh took up the mantle of bringing his OWN ideals into play, the 'torch' to relight the US.]
Head over heels with eyes on the prize[Talking about how the media got so excited, 'head over heels', and how their eyes/cameras/mics were pretty much glued to the idea, 'prize', of covering the war in Iraq.]
I settled for less and its more than enough[this is talking about how the narrator settled for less than the media's goal, aka his service in iraq, and it was more than enough for him.]
just say when[Possibly as in 'when will this end?']

Truth be told
I'd rather be sold
than juggle stepping stones[He'd rather be the one on the recieving end of the propaganda/TV screen, than the one actually covering it, because he didn't want to be be juggling the people's minds/ideals, the stepping stones.]
But when he tries
I try[Sympathizing again with the 'wounded veteran' aforementioned.]

They all take part
to get a headstart[Now everybody is trying to stay ahead of everybody else. I think.]
Big whigs love hiting the jackpot[talking about the idea of being able to cover the Iraqi war.]
taking all the cheapshots[cheapshots=harsh words directed at a certain person(s), perhaps in this case the Iraqi people, how the media is directing[taking] cheapshots at them.]
the referee was wrong [Referee=some higher-up, maybe the pres./government, and how he/they were wrong about the nuclear weapons supposedly being in Iraq.]

The way they left us all in the dark
They buried the sun so i carried the torch
The way they left ours eyes on the prize
I've settled for less and its more than enough
Just say when
[otherwise, refrain is the same except for two lines 'the way they left our eyes on the prize. I've settled for less and it's more than enough.' They sound as if now the prize, in the narrator's mind, is similar to the media's, but in the way that they now want to not cover, but kill certain Iraqis. But it's more than enough to have been there, the narrator remembers, and repeats his lament; just say when.]

Well...yeahhh....

The reason I went down this venture was probably the 'desert heat' bit.

*eyehearts*

anyway.

Let me introduce you to a pair that strikes crude oil, but I see pyrite.[i'm guessing that 'strike crude oil' means to 'be cruel and get rich??'. slang for pyrite: Fool's gold]
It is the same old pattern - the goose that feeds the gander.[the weak feed the strong's power]
They choose to act but not I.[the narrator has decided to stay neutral in this; while the 'pair' picks sides]

Planting the seeds you sow is easier than growing the row.[possibly about spreading ideals]
Let's go outside and it might restore us.[a little fresh air does a lot of good, is possibly what that means]
More for the fire that fights for the freeze now mechanical.[more fuel for the passion that fights for a permanent solution; possibly a technology-related solution]

So then the pair proceeded,
another pulse defeated - can't say that I am surprised.[as this 'pair' of individuals go on, they kill another individual. the narrator isn't at all schocked by this, duh.]
"It is the fly trap's color that caused the fall into her"[the person killed fell into a trap because of the lure]
What is the shade that you saw?[what is the lure 'she' saw?]

Planting the seeds you sow is easier than growing the row.
Let's go outside and it might restore us.
More for the fire that fights for the freeze now mechanical.

Bound by the salt not your earth, the hat mocks the rabbit[not sure on the first part, but the second part I think is an allusion to Alice in Wonderland; the hatter in this line is making fun of the white rabbit for being late]
while the bee stings the shark.[the minority is provoked by the majority, and attacks]
Stop the start, these are my disguises.[no clue on this line]

Planting the seeds you sow is easier than growing the row.
Let's go outside and it might restore us.
More for the fire that fights for the freeze now mechanical.

I dunno. I heard that somewhere too, but maybe there could be some sort of ingenius double or triple meaning, plus the song title.

oh. And on the title meaning?

I think it's a reference to when the English defeated the spanish armada.

Wolf-the English, or Elizabeth I.

Spanish Sahara-the ocean, and thusly the spanish armada.

Sahara being a metaphor, as the Sahara has been called an ocean of sand before i think... xD

If you're keeping score,
Then you're bound to win
A bird's-eye-view of a burning bridge
You've gone through ghost towns
Set on fire
Hoping the risk was worth the cause
-Seems to me, this verse is about playing your cards right and you'll win[keeping score being playing cards correctly], but you hope that the cause's reasoning overwrites each risk you take.

-"burning bridge"? Could be that the thing you finally win turns out to be something that wasn't what you expected, or is obsolete.

-The 'you've gone through ghost towns set on fire' part is a head-scratcher, except that there's a risk in going through anything set on fire.

[oh] Sound off the false alarm [oh-ooh-oh]

But I'll make my own colleague from wood and from ivory
And reap the rewards of proximity
I'll assemble my equal from what I lack and require
And gather what's left unaccompanied.
-I think that the refrain's about making a puppet or scapegoat [make my own colleague from wood and from ivory] because you make most puppets out of wood, and the ivory could be embellishments[ivory is expensive and rare. so could any embellishments]. The colleague bit could be about pretending to care about someone and callign them your colleague or friend.

-The second part[I'll assemble my equeal from what I lack and require, and gather what's left unaccompanied] is about using the "puppet/colleague" to get close to your target, and then doing the deed yourself, or "gather what's left unaccompanied".

It smells like disaster
It looks like a trap
So go by the wayside
And never look back

-The first half[it smells like disaster, it looks like a trap] could be about something being suspicious, then

-the second half[so go by the wayside and never look back] would be about deciding it was *too* suspicious, and taking a different route to your goal[go by the wayside], not even considering what would've happened had you not taken the alternative route[and never look back]

If you could spare me forty winks
While you cry wolf and I count sheep
What good are ghosts in Kevlar vests
With backbones like a jellyfish

-The first couple lines are probably talking about using the colleague as a scapegoat[which i mentioned earlier], hence the "while you cry wolf" and "I count sheep". Counting sheep being relax or fall asleep.

-the last two lines are talking about how easy it was to get past the security guards[ghost in kevlar vests] or persuade a metaphorical guard, because they are a coward[with backbones like a jellyfish]

[oh] stomp on your land again [oh-ooh-oh]

-this could be about being able to do something illegal again and again without getting caught [stomp on your land = illegal deed]

[[insert refrain here, with same plausible lyric translation]]

[oh]stomp on your land again[oh-ooh-oh]
-again, doing something illegal over and over.

If you're keeping score then you're bound to win
A ring-side seat at the main event.

-'If you're keeping score then you're bound to win' - again, play your cards right and you'll win.

-'ring-side seat at the main event' being the better prize than the unexpected/obsolete one[burning bridge]

Just my thoughts. Probably incorrect, and not quite fit-like-a-jigsaw-puzzle in the context used, but my thoughts all the same.

My Chemical Romance – Desert Song Lyrics 18 years ago
hmm... I dunno why, but the first stanza made me think of the Crusades.

"We hold in our hearts the sword and the faith
Swelled up from the rain clouds, move like a wraith"

The sword and the faith was the big tip-off. For me. :\

"Well after all, we'll lie another day.
And through it all, we'll find some other way
To carry on through cartilage and flood.
And did you come to to stare or wash away the blood?"

For some reason this sounded to me like 'we're not giving up, and we'll fight on until there's none left'.

*shrug*

That's what I got. It may have been because my social studies class got through watching "Kingdom of Heaven" and I first listened to this song with that movie still on the brain.
