willow: the long hair of a girl or woman
well: her mouth and throat
hill: her breast
the edge of the domain: the end of adolescence; the loss of innocence; the transition from boy to man
red cave: her vagina
Mary's house...: knowledge and mystery
the last stanza: maturity; wisdom; appreciation
This song is about coming of age. |

The first part sounds like a recording of a real conversation, perhaps a lawyer, cop, or journalist talking to someone found guilty of murder and cannibalism. If that's the case, who is it? |

She had a terrible horse accident a few years ago (she was trampled by her horse and spent a very long time in the hospital). A lot of her songs since then have been about that in some way, including most of Misery is a Butterfly. I think this song is about how she knows her horse's true nature now, and can't trust it as fully. The references to scars are literal--she's probably covered with them. "The Dress" might be referring to the dress that she wore the day of the accident; perhaps the dress caught the horse's eye while she was riding and spooked it, causing it to hurt her. |

I'm not convinced that he actually says these lines: "finally your little trophy. try to buy back the freedom you sold so quick. you chump. you're chomping on what's mine." |

Maybe it's about nuclear fission. Atoms collide, atoms split, but the matter and energy doesn't disappear, it just goes somewhere else and meets other atoms. However, I don't think the title or numbers really add anything to that theme. |

What I find interesting is that we assume there is some kind of deep seeded meaning here because there so obviously is in their other songs. I believe this is how artists are able to easily create a great volume of work--if some of their work is amazing, then the rest of it will be held in the same light. |

I think this song is about copulation. The guiding "voice from behind the stage" is the instinctual drive to mate. The spermatozoa are the "invisible people doing the wave" and "tunnel[ing] underground", racing towards the ovum. |
