The artist should be listed as "Real People". This album is technically a split of Zachary Condon's two projects; Beirut - his indie/world project, and Real People - his electronic project he started doing when he was much, much younger. |

| They Might Be Giants – We're The Replacements Lyrics

This refers to when the Johns kept finding themselves often booked at the exact same venues The Replacements played the night before. They would introduce the band as The Replacements instead of They Might Be Giants as a joke, and this song came out of it. There are subtle jokes in these lyrics pertaining to The Replacements' reputation of performing belligerently drunk. |

Rivers got high again and wrote another goofy song about his social anxiety problems. End of story. |

I've had one hell of a time trying to analyze this one. It seems to be written about something very specific that is never mentioned. I'm contemplating asking Ian about it if I ever talk to him again. |

"SoozequeD" seems to know the story behind this one. It all makes sense to me. I guess I just assume too many songs are about romantic relationships. |

Wow.
It didn't hit me until just now, but I've got an aching feeling that this song is probably about his father. I think the 9-12-2007 post is spot on.
I always thought this was a relationship song, but the last verse pretty much disproves that theory. |

This song encompasses the way I've felt since the day I graduated high school. Everything can get so fucked up.. or "blackened" from then on. John is Ian's brother, and he's also mentioned in "Skinned Knees and Gapped Teeth" and "Run In The Front". |

Personally, I've always related this song to my own situation, and hoped that Ian encountered a similar situation, and wrote this song about it.
"I bet he likes you more than he likes me
‘Cause I’m the former one
He’s the latter one
He’d never say it but its right
Sorry, that was rude of me, forget I said a thing"
I believe those lines could be about his ex moving onto a close friend of his... then again, they could just be written that way for catchiness. The rest is pretty obvious, I think, but still brilliantly poetic.
So, I agree with 'blanklove'. I'm glad I'm not the only one to interpret it that way. |
