this part right here, is the PERFECT description of what happens leading up to a first kiss. i always get that pre-kiss feeling whenever these lyrics come up on the album. so every breath stung more and more a wave of whips across my spine a billion bees trapped in my chest nails on a chalkboard every time 'til i watched your fingers sneak towards mine i heard your breath go thin and short i tucked your hair behind you ears and i watched your eyes dart back and forth |

| oh and to add to that, the part about your friends not waiting, its about like when you first make a decision to tour and be a musician, you make vows with your friends to keep the friendship true through all the fan hype. but kevin seems to be saying that eventually your friends will get fed up with it or otherwise assume that you're loved enough and that you dont need them. so that when it all starts to fade, and you realize how fickle your fanbase is, and you want to come to someone who really cares about your problems, you realize that your old friends arent there for that anymore. | |

| i think what kevin devine signifies about him being stoned somewhere and the girl walking by with his shirt and singing his song, thats supposed to show that she doesnt even recognize him as she walks by. though shes obvioulsy a fanatic of his music for randomly humming his song and stuff like that, the fact that she doesnt recognize him and that hes in such a sorry state basically says "youve dwindled down to nothing, and you arent as good as the songs you used to write anymore." thats why the next line says "thats when you're done." | |

| man, i just love how he can be brutally honest about himself in this one. i mean he makes it clear that hes messed up in the first part, and then in the second part he lets you know that its purely self-pity and that its lame for him to ask others to pity him as well, but he does it anyway. and just the main line is so wise. man, kevin devine is one of the few true lyrical geniuses out there. | |

"i think the thing about 'my friends' is a metaphor for alcohol addiction" haha thats reading way too much into it. it really literally means his friends haha. |

| the title of the song basically sums up its meaning--that he feels absolutely no emotion up on that stage. the side-theme, where he says "don't come with me tonight, if i said i cared for you i lied" is about if a girl were to follow him, hes warning her that it would only end up in meaningless sex and he would toss her aside afterward and forget her, like so many band members are famous for. the follow-up, "you waste no time tonight, you'll take me home if it costs your life" is showing that the girl basically doesnt care and she'll do anything to get in bed with him. | |

| i disagree completely i think this song is about the chance it takes to give up everything to pursue a career in music. perhaps its about a talk corey had with another band member or vice versa. corey's portraying his confidence in the band to the other band member, saying like "i swear, i'll take you where the bright lights will shine on the perfect crowd. i know you'll stick it out with me now." and maybe when he says "you've got so much to lose but i don't", he means that he is going to do music regardless because hes already messed up his life in a lot of ways and hes got nothing left to lose by giving music a shot, whereas the other band member may be taking a large chance when he still has safer opportunities. "we don't want you to get older and tell them what you would have done if you were us" is basically saying, "i don't want you to regret your decision if you decide not to pursue this band." "sit and sink" probably refers to the idea that if he "sits", or does nothing and waits too long to make his decision, he'll "sink", or lose all his opportunities. i mean there's a lot of rhetoric in here that points to this meaning of the song. "i know you don't think we can go, but i've seen the bright lights shine on less deserving men before." bands with worse music have gotten signed. etc... | |

| corey told me that this song is about having a split personality, but a lot of the lines need clarification for me, like i dont understand the details of what he means by every line. | |
