Sit and Sink Lyrics

We've got to make it to next summer
You've got so much to lose, but I don't
I swear I'll take you where the bright lights
Will shine on, shine on the perfect crowd
I know you'll stick it out with me now
Is it too late?

We don't want you to get older
And tell them what you would have done if you were us
I don't think you've got the guts
I don't think you've got it in you
You ain't got it, you ain't got it, no

Now I know you don't think we can go but
I've seen the bright lights shine on less deserving men before
So let's just drink, sit and sink
You've got so much to lose, but I don't
Is it too late now?
Has time run out?
You haven't seen the bright lights shine on
Is it too late now?
Has time run out?
You haven't seen the bright lights shine on

We don't want you to get older
And tell them what you would have done if you were us
I don't think you've got the guts
I don't think you've got it in you
You ain't got it, you ain't got it
You ain't got it
We don't want you to get older
(Let's just drink)
And tell them what you would have done
(Sit and sink)
If you were us
(You've got so much to lose, but I don't)
I don't think you've got the guts
(Let's just drink)
I don't think you've got it in you
(Sit and sink)
You ain't got it, you ain't got it, no
(You've got so much to lose, but I don't)

Let's just drink, sit and sink
You've got so much to lose, but I don't

first off, great song, easily my favorite by the graduate.

secondly, this song seems to have the old motto of "live every day as if it were ur last" and all that good stuff, quit being so scared of the bad that could happen that ur not willing to let any good happen. the person its being sung too is just too scared to have fun (lets just drink, sit and sink) and they havn't realized it (you haven't seen the bright lights shine on.) can't look back on things and think 'what if'.

i absolutely love this song.. and.. what it means to me is that you should always be having fun, and remember the good times, and you have to experience everything so you know what it feels like., they are scared to maybe get hurt or in trouble. and hey why not just drink while sitting and sink your problems away.. then go do something stupid.

Although I agree with urowndisaster, the song could easily be about the opposite, it could be about regretting living life in a wreckless way. "We don't want you to get older And tell them what you would have done If you were us" that could be interpreted as someone who got older and feels like they shouldn't have wasted as much time as they did drinking, or living on edge. "I don't think you've got the guts I don't think you've got it in you" could be saying you don't have the will to not give in and drink or be drawn by peer pressure, so ultimately the writer is saying you have so much talent and character don't let it go to waste, with the lines "You've got so much to lose, but I don't". So the person writing is actually giving advice, even though they think as themself as someone who doesn't have much, and just deserves to drink, sit and sink, when really nobody really deserves to feel like that. Idk. Haha, but that is just my take from my own personal experience.

i disagree completely i think this song is about the chance it takes to give up everything to pursue a career in music. perhaps its about a talk corey had with another band member or vice versa. corey's portraying his confidence in the band to the other band member, saying like "i swear, i'll take you where the bright lights will shine on the perfect crowd. i know you'll stick it out with me now." and maybe when he says "you've got so much to lose but i don't", he means that he is going to do music regardless because hes already messed up his life in a lot of ways and hes got nothing left to lose by giving music a shot, whereas the other band member may be taking a large chance when he still has safer opportunities. "we don't want you to get older and tell them what you would have done if you were us" is basically saying, "i don't want you to regret your decision if you decide not to pursue this band." "sit and sink" probably refers to the idea that if he "sits", or does nothing and waits too long to make his decision, he'll "sink", or lose all his opportunities. i mean there's a lot of rhetoric in here that points to this meaning of the song. "i know you don't think we can go, but i've seen the bright lights shine on less deserving men before." bands with worse music have gotten signed. etc...

I gotta agree with theguy77

While reading the lyrics for the first time I also though he was talking about a musical career

this song is really about the singers old band before the graduate when it was coming to its end. the lead guitarist opted out, thinking he was wasting time with it. the line "lets just drink, sit and sink" refers to the two of them drinking together discussing the future of their musical careers.

he's probably pretty pissed now that they're freaking BLOWING UP.
