King Crimson – Matte Kudasai Lyrics 12 years ago
This strikes me as a story of longing, of a Japanese woman who has travelled to the USA on a long business trip, separating her from her partner back home. She sits in the chair of her hotel room at night, gazing out the window over a bleak, rainy, foreign city. She wishes she could be back home, or have her partner with her, but knows she can't, and just has to sit it out until they can reunite. Deep down, she fears that maybe it will be too long; maybe they won't.

"Please wait."

Elbow – Dear Friends Lyrics 14 years ago
Beautiful song, and not too cryptic. Garvey illustrates the strong emotional connection of friendship with belonging - home and heart are where the friends are (family are of course a subset), no matter what kind of people they are. A perfect thematic end to a beautiful album about childhood and coming home.

The Pineapple Thief – So We Row Lyrics 15 years ago
No comments? This song is awesome! There we go. The verse is so normal, but the rest is so intense. It's amazing how much you can do with one little riff.

Anyway, as for the lyrics, there's a little "so we row, row, to the edge of the world" in there just before the outro kicks in, and a chanting of "all I want is to stay here" right at the end of the loud part of the outro. It'd be more representative if ", and row, and row" was added to the lyrics as well.

But wow. We all feel a bit like this sometimes :).

Porcupine Tree – Dislocated Day Lyrics 15 years ago
Anyone know what the phone conversation is at the end? I get the impression it's one of Wilson's colleagues calling him up about an ending to the song he's thought up, saying how it could be interesting, and so Wilson used THAT for the ending instead :).

Elbow – An Audience with the Pope Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh yeah for sure. What are they thinking giving the Mercury Prize, which everyone knows is the prize for the album in which every single lyric is ground-breakingly original, for this album? It's almost as though they listened to the music as well. And the other tracks.

I mean this is a song about love - that's so unoriginal! Therefore Elbow sucks.

Elbow – Mirrorball Lyrics 16 years ago
Until reading the lyrics just now, I was under the impression Guy was saying "you are my mirrorball", which in turn led to my impression that it was about falling in love with the perfect girl, who reflects everything you are and everything you want. The feeling make your head spin and it's like the whole world is smiling at you (the street singing and the sirens translated into song). I'm feeling a bit like this right now, so I'm keeping this interpretation in mind.

jamie's spot on though. The same sentiment is there; the love takes over and life feels like a dance.

Dave Matthews Band – Squirm Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah I was wondering the same thing cellordore. Turns out Dave explains it in his interview with Billboard a few months ago (http://tinyurl.com/cfv8vo), as well as the dog barking.

As for the actual words, with a hand from AntsMarching (http://tinyurl.com/q9vnmd), adding some words that I have no idea about (?) but that sound phonetically close. Maybe they're some kind of American food I'm not aware of? Anyway:

I have scalloped prawns (?) I have potato corn (?)
Sweet potatoes, I've (?) potatos
I have onion, I have garlic
I have bell peppers
I have green onion, tomato, cucumber, avocados
I have onion and bananas (?)

Highlight of the album for sure :P

The Mars Volta – Wax Simulacra Lyrics 17 years ago
Analysing Mars Volta songs like this for meaning is for Ph.D's, but I hear that.

Although Dennis Chambers holds most ridiculously fast drummer in my book (world record single stroke rolls don't count as drumming). Oh, and Buddy Rich, of course.

Coldplay – Strawberry Swing Lyrics 17 years ago
@Christiaan: If you want fake perfection, go and listen to Fitter Happier. I believe this is about true happiness, pure bliss. It's not just about rolling on despite all the problems around us, it's about having no problems around us.

Which brings me to what I've been wondering about. What is meant by "swing"? These comments have suggested it's just a swing, like the thing you sit on that swings back and forth. However until I actually read these comments, my assumption was that "the swing" was like a state of being, like an alternate dimension where everything is perfect. The fact that he says "they were sitting IN the strawberry swing" reinforces this for me - it's like being in limbo, an abstract state rather than anything physical.

I like the previous soldier interpretation. As I was re-reading the lyrics thinking about how well they summed up perfect bliss, I realised "waste of time" goes against this notion. As if it's perfect while the other is around, but if they're not then it's nothing. This would suggest the perfection stems from the relationship alone (rose-tinted glasses) rather than the physical/political environment as I had thought.

Oh and I say 'the other' instead of 'she' because it seems to be about love rather than a guy loving a girl. The suggestion that it was inspired by Martin's love for his kids makes perfect sense - it certainly has that nostalgic, childhood quality to it with no specific references to romance.

Dave Matthews – Eh Hee Lyrics 18 years ago
Awesome song! Reminds me of the equally Carter-driven "Save Me." Love Dave as an actor, ever since his role in House MD - similar acting to the video ;)

Dave's saying the world is not "neat" despite what people try to tell you, it's actually "fucking crazy." I believe there are political undertones, as we know Dave is pretty anit-war, and my first impression was that he was attacking the Geoge W. administration for selling wrong wars and policies to the people:
"hide when there's someone
try to convince you
that they know the answer
no matter the question"

"praise god for he has many names
but the devil have many more"
seems to suggest that although God is more holy and divine, the Devil is more prominent in today's society.

"people have come to believe
that we are its greatest achievement
when really we're just a collection of cells
overrating themselves"
seems to sum up what the song is about: human arrogance. The first verse is about people who think they know everything (politicians in general), the second is an extension that suggests that they DON'T and that the world is out of control.

"with the love that my mother gave me
i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor"
The Devil represents hate and cruelty, and Dave's saying we can fight the evil in today's culture with love and kindness. As always, a great message in today's world of mediocrity (come on, Umbrella???).
