Eh Hee Lyrics
[chant]
praise god who have many names
but the devil have many more
with the love that my mother gave me
i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
drop the devil to his knees
hide when there's someone
that try to convince you
that they have the answer
no matter the question
be wary of those that believe
in a neat little world
'cause it's just fucking crazy
you know that it is
[chant]
walking along in the haze of confusion
sometimes i can laugh
but sometimes it takes all of my strength
just to find enough reason
to take the next step
step but i will
but i will till i do
[chant]
somebody gonna save the world
somebody gonna save the world
brother sister
brother sister
brother sister
brother sister
praise god for he has many names
but the devil have many more
and with the love that my mother gave me
i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
strange evolution
how people have come to believe
that we are its greatest achievement
when really we're just a collection of cells
overrating themselves
hello god i'm avoiding the truth
[chant]
somebody gonna save the world
drop the devil to his knees
drop the devil to his knees
but the devil have many more
with the love that my mother gave me
i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
i'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
drop the devil to his knees
that try to convince you
that they have the answer
no matter the question
be wary of those that believe
in a neat little world
'cause it's just fucking crazy
you know that it is
sometimes i can laugh
but sometimes it takes all of my strength
just to find enough reason
to take the next step

Using the love his mother gave him to drop the devil on his fuckin ass.
I love this guy.
Awesome song! Reminds me of the equally Carter-driven "Save Me." Love Dave as an actor, ever since his role in House MD - similar acting to the video ;)
Dave's saying the world is not "neat" despite what people try to tell you, it's actually "fucking crazy." I believe there are political undertones, as we know Dave is pretty anit-war, and my first impression was that he was attacking the Geoge W. administration for selling wrong wars and policies to the people: "hide when there's someone try to convince you that they know the answer no matter the question"
"praise god for he has many names but the devil have many more" seems to suggest that although God is more holy and divine, the Devil is more prominent in today's society.
"people have come to believe that we are its greatest achievement when really we're just a collection of cells overrating themselves" seems to sum up what the song is about: human arrogance. The first verse is about people who think they know everything (politicians in general), the second is an extension that suggests that they DON'T and that the world is out of control.
"with the love that my mother gave me i'm gonna drop the devil to the floor" The Devil represents hate and cruelty, and Dave's saying we can fight the evil in today's culture with love and kindness. As always, a great message in today's world of mediocrity (come on, Umbrella???).
I agree with the obvious political overtones. I also agree with an "attack" on the W Administration. I feel as if Eh Hee may be a slang insult towards the country boy nature of W.
You have to admit, the chant sounds like "eh hee hee, I'm a liar" Although unconfirmed of course.
This is the beauty of DMB...the mystery. He is a mysterious person, likable personality, but his scats, and jibberish, and crazy chants are all intriguing to us. Well done! (as if he'd ever read this, haha)
I just saw DMB play this last night at the Smirnoff Music Center, Dallas TX. Dave prefaced the song with an explanation that [the style of the song] was an hommage to the khoi san (Africa).
I believe the song starts off with Dave having a short verse about telling everyone to "Come on in", not chanting.
I didn't see any obvious political overtones in this song. Not every song is a political statement. This song deals with the presence of the actual devil, not George Bush, influencing the world.
i think this is actually pretty simple and people are extremely over-analyzing. this is simply an expression of the everyday struggle people have reasoning with whether to believe in god or evolution. first half of the song-belief of god
"be wary of those that believe in a neat little world " (be wary of those who believe in evolution)
second half-belief in evolution. but the song leans toward god- explained by the song's repetitive hook-"drop the devil to his knees" and also the last line of the last (evolution) verse, "hello god i'm avoiding the truth", expresses the struggle for how easy it can be to make sense of evolution, yet perceive this logic as a way of denying a maker. much like a pendelum that swings back and forth between being skeptical and faithful. dave's acceptance of evolution is clearly overshadowed by a belief in god by using the songs hook as a defense (to the devil) meaning from a religious point of view that the devil symbolizes the pull he feels when wondering about evolution. not saying dave is a devout christian-the song is meant to express the struggle. remember- dave is an extreme idealist, and wouldn't have a narrow assumption.
He explains what it's about in the Live at Radio City DVD. He meant a group in Africa called the Da Quois Sans (sp?) and basically they just blew his mind. His story wne on for about 5-10 minutes. You should listen to it sometime.
he explains that the african tribe was his inspiration for writing the song, but i dont think that necessarily has much to do with its meaning.
interesting. i love this song and i think it does have political meanings behind it but in the radio city dvd he explains about the tribes in africa but you know dave.....
I think this song musically was inspired by the African tribal music, but lyrically, it is a quasi politcal song as well as a protest to our current society. Who can stand these people who "try to convince you that they have the answer no matter the question" From our politicians to Scientologists, all spewing out their garbage about a "neat little world" Scientologist whom hold themselves up as Gods and every thing they say is truth, sorry folks, but "we're just a collection of cells"
