It was a girlfriend of Paul Noonan's. Uaneen Fitzsimons from Ardglass, Co Down in the Province of Ulster. She died in a car crash in 2000
I mention that she was from Ulster because of the line "Standing on a black Ulster hill" |

I think the lines "Though we're all pillars of salt now
It was worth it for the view." are explained in the lines just before them. They refer to Medusa, a Greek mythological character.
It was said if you looked upon her you would turn to stone. I think what he is saying is that even if he knew he would turn to stone it would have been still worth it getting to know her, look upon her etc |

I get exactly what you mean, very similar interpretation to me. I went out with a girl on and off from 14 to 21. Was crazy about her but we both moved away from our home town so naturally broke up. Recently we both moved back. Those old feelings came back for me but not for her. I think ill always love her but i have to put on an act that i am cool with seeing her out. |

Well it could be about dating her having a relationship with an Irish guy who sings rebel songs?
"Armored cars and tanks and guns came to take away our sons
And everybody?s stood behind
The man behind the wire"
These are lyrics to a song about internment of IRA volunteers in Northern Ireland.

Fantastic song. First time i heard it was on the Ian Dempsey breakfast show on Todayfm in Ireland.
Song of the week? Song of the century.
I interpret the lyrics as the life cycle of a wonderful relationship, from the innocent beginnings to the devastating conclusions. But even though, the singer is heart broken, he looks back with fondness to the entire relationship and even though he no longer has his wife, he has memories that will be cherished forever.
Hope the song makes it elsewhere. |

Artless got it bang on.
What a fantastic song. I love it. Shame a few more people dont know it.
And though I fear that through this life
She'll only call me friend
Til I'm dead and buried in my grave
My Love will never end
Thats my favourite bit. |

Love it "She said, "I've gotta be honest,
You're wasting your time if you're fishing 'round here."
And I said, "You must be mistaken,
I'm not foolin'.
This feeling is real."
This is a great lyric

Go on the hoops. What a great song.
"You're in my heart, you're in my soul
You'll be my breath should I grow old
You are my lover, you're my best friend
You're in my soul"

This is a lyric to a different song that describes alot of peoples belief of Irish men fighting in British causes.
"You fought for the wrong country, died for the wrong cause and your Ma even said it was Irelands great loss" Not sure if this song has anything to do with this really for americans today fighting for someone elses cause when there are plenty of problems to be dealt with at home first? |

Id advise any Irish person who is living away from home and feeling homesick to never listen to this song. Just makes you wanna go home and never leave again. |

Its obviously not about this, but It just sums up Tipperary Hurling at the moment. An Irish Sport. Tipperary used to rule the Hurling world up to the 70's but in recent years they have lost there status as Kings of hurling.
Basically what im saying is to me and me alone this song is synonamous with my favourite sports team. Most people on this site probably never even heard of hurling, i just wanted too add my two cents. |

Song about the four provinces of Ireland. Munster Leinster Connacht and parts of Ulster are free and independent. 6 counties of the province of Ulster are what is modern day Northern Ireland. Majority of people here support union with the UK but a growing Nationalist population could result in the democratic unification of Ireland down the line. With the help of God in peaceful process. Song describes the history of Ireland quite well. |

Me and the only girl i ever really felt like i could stay with her forever broke up the summer this came out. She had to move to France for a year in College. Neither of us wanted to really, dont think we could get back now. Still reminds me of it everytime i hear this song. Rough stuff. |

It is about Northern Ireland 100% definitely. It was banned in the UK during the NI conflict. I think its wrote from the views of an ordinary everyday Irish person living in the North just wanting to get on with there life in peace.
And Northern Ireland has had it very rough in the 20th century rikdad. Just as things are finally starting to improve, now is not the time to forget the past. Lest it happens again.
I liked Jordan07 view on the song aswell. |
