This song is defiantly about abortion mostly. Conor said in an interview that it was about his friend’s abortion, and that it was making him wonder if his chance to settle down and have a family is passing him by. In an album review for Cassadaga Robert Christgau wrote: "The gossip in us will wonder whether the unadorned finale addresses the same career woman, who has pretty clearly just aborted a fetus Oberst helped conceive." the 'career woman' he's talking about is Winona Ryder. He makes it sound as if this was for sure Conor's child. As for drug references I can see it too, he sure does have a lot of them, lol. |

I think that the song is about a girl he loved who left him for someone else, and he's just completely obsessed with her now. And since he can’t have her back he’s going to kill himself so maybe then she’d remember him and what not, but he can’t bring himself to do it so he settles for leaving a song on her message machine. And when he says “Well, I drug your ghost across the country” I think he meant that he traveled with her memory to places they had gone together, and “In every city, memories would whisper ‘Here is where you rest...’” he’s saying that he cant live without her, or that he will never forget her, or he will forever live in the past. And about the girl who’s abused, he might be saying that he was trying to move on, but she was still on his mind, and that he couldn’t escape her memory… I don’t know just my opinion. Ultimately I think it’s a song of love that lead to obsession, it’s creepy, and the music is undeniably creepy. This is a great song, one of my Bright Eyes favorites, and I love the music. |

To me this song is just about giving everything you have to changing something you think is wrong, and not just standing on the side lines and waiting for things to change. In the video the people are doing little things to inform people about what they think is wrong, and hoping more people will want to help fix it.

I agree with socalblonde73, it does remind me of saves the day, but that doesn't take away how great this song is, I think it's about hating who you are, and wanting to change, be like everyone else, but having a hard time doing it, so he takes his anger out on him self, because he sees him self as the problem...just my thoughts |

To start off off, this song is so amazing…I think the song is about how teenagers are useless to the world until we hit adulthood…like when you’re a kid everyone’s amazed at how cute you are and everything…and when you’re a teen no one really cares about you, they’re to busy trying to turn you in to another clone like them, they spend so much time trying to changed you and mold you in to a “good citizen” and a “good Christian” that they crush all your hopes and dreams to make sure you end up to be what they call successful, instead of yourself. Just my thoughts, but I could be wrong. |

I love this song, yeah it is a cover, but I think Manson did it better...I think the song is about unconditional love...I think when he says "There's my baby, lost that's all" he is saying even though her soul is gone, he still loves her and is going to stay with her no matter what...maybe she's sick, or dieing and lost hope? I don't know, just my thoughts...Marilyn Manson is one of the greatest bands on earth |

to me the song is talking about everyone trying to change you, and having to hide who you are, because everyone wants you to be just like them, but for one night just forgetting about everyone else and showing them that you can make them proud being your self if they'll just give you a chance. And when he says ‘the more you change the less you feel’ to me this means that it’s hard to have fun, or enjoy life, when not yourself anymore. |

I got the idea that the song wasn't about a girl at all...to me the song is about being in love with feeling horrible...like being depressed all the time and loving it...I can see other meanings to, but that's the one I like best |
