| Porcupine Tree – Glass Arm Shattering Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
I love songs like this and "Collapse the Light into Earth". Very simple ideas but are very powerful nonetheless. As for the meaning, when I think of glass I think of something fragile and empty. This contrasts with the "Feeling all your love" lyrics, so I'm guessing it has to do with something that's been haunting him has been broken.
To me the whole album was about a religious mother who committed suicide and now haunts her adult son, preventing him from forming real connections with any other humans. Now maybe he's broken that curse somehow.
I really don't know, but it's a beautiful song nonetheless and seems to have optimistic connotations. |

| Porcupine Tree – Sleep Together Lyrics

The word "Sleep" can mean a lot of things. Obviously "Death" comes to mind, but also in keeping with the theme of the album, a computer can also be put to "Sleep". And of course the sexual connotation.
Suicide is probably the most obvious thing to get from this song, but it could also signify a transformation or change of some sort. Perhaps it's talking about putting the modern empty lifestyle of mindless information to sleep, AKA "Turn off the Future". As far as the sexual theme goes, maybe it's referring to the person he or she saw on the beach in "Anesthetize" or the person whose picture he or she cut out in "Way out of Here". |

The ending reminds of the final scene in the movie "La Dolce Vita". The movie's main character lives a chaotic lifestyle of debauchery, much like the information overload of the character in this album. At the end of the movie, he basically throws a giant party full of deviant sexual fetishes, and he leads the party out onto the ocean shore. In the distance he sees a quite blond girl that he had met in a very short scene earlier in the film. She waves to him and tries to say something, but he points to his ears letting her know that he cannot hear her.
I really don't think that this similarity is a coincidence as the themes of the film "La Dolce Vita" strongly remind me of the themes of this album. I recommend everyone watch the movie to see what I mean. |

The ghost story thing would make sense, if it didn't personify the specter as male. So that means the male in this story must have died at some point, and it's the female who jumped out the window...but that wouldn't make sense because Steven Wilson is singing and says "I throw a window wide open"...is Steven Wilson singing as a female? That doesn't make sense, but look at the album cover. It's definitely a female, and maybe she's staring out a...very big window? I don't know, but the whole saying "His" when referring to the specter is throwing me off. |

| Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics

The music in this song's beautiful, and the solo itself make it one of the best song's of all time. But as for the lyrics, it's nice to think that some spur of the moment jotting down words could end up having this meaning-of-life point to the song, but in actuality, I just hear a bunch of jotted down words when I listen to this song. I guess if you literally interpret the song, this is the meaning of it:
1. A rich women goes to the store, and purchases a spot in heaven. Figurative interpratations could be buying indulgences from the catholic church, but I digress...
2. This stairway comes with a receit and a rain check. If all the reservations in heaven are taken, she can show them the rain check/receit she got, and they will certainly let her in.
3. There is fine print on the receit she cannot read, so travels back to the store to ask what it says.
4. Okay, she goes to the west and uh...she, uh...the piper's a lawyer that uh..., she gets captured by a group of pagans in the forest and...happily ever after? Yeah, I still don't get this song, but great nonetheless. |

By the way I'm just amazed at reading the comments here how everyone pretty much interprets this song the same way and has the same story about their first love from years ago. Of course this song reminds me of that feeling years ago, I'm just amazed at how many people here have the same story |

This has to be the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Stairway's a great song and all, but I just don't understand why this song didn't get the same recognition. It's just one of those songs that it's a miracle that it was even conceived. Good thing Plant ditched that one girl who made him choose music over her |

| Death – Altering The Future Lyrics

Don't get me wrong, I love Death, and this song is one of my favorites just because of the music, but these lyrics make no sense. "Look to to the past is what we should do, when justice was done and justice was true". Yeah, in the past when they cut off your hand for stealing, that's what we should do. Plus, I get the picture of how abortion is "altering the future" by taking away a destiny of a life that could have been...but honestly, I'm sure almost everyone has "altered the future" onto the floor some time or another. Maybe I'm just over analyzing a death metal song, Death's the only death metal band I know that's every gotten preachy in a death metal song. |

my god, why are you discussing who gives a shit what over 6 pages! this is songmeanings, not "debate genres".com. You think I haven't ever wanted to go to a trivium or slipknot page and just talk shit? I don't because I know it's annoying when people insult my tastes, so I don't talk shit about theirs. It's just what you like, it doesn't matter if it's faster or heavier or what, if you don't like it, than who gives a fuck. Anyway, noone apparently cares about this song. It's good. Probably the best off domination. |

Considering this is off the album "Brave new World" it makes me think of...well, Brave new World!
It makes me think of where Bernard wouldn't take up for John and...that other guy (it's been awhile since I read it...) when they were throwing the soma away. His TIME CAME (your time will come) but than he turned into the wicker man and wouldn't join them (I guess wicker man is a metaphor for being used by everyone else, since wicker men are sacrificed). |

The "her milk is my shit" "my shit is her milk" part seems to be about schitzophrenia, or maybe some kind of personality dissorder where other personalities are "fed"
by "shit" or bottled up emotions. For the DULL steak (that's what I think it says) test meat part I guess that's just using imagery of what his brain is like. |

I expected more comments than this, but anyway, I guess the song's about how love can be fatal, and how rediculous it is to have such strong desires over people.
By the way, the part about the crazy hammer vaguely reminds me of a certain cannibal corpse song... |

This may seem like a weird analogy to make, but I actually think that this song might be about the book "Brave New World". The chorus is the most apparent,
"sweet my honey" was a line in one of the songs they sang in their orgy parties. And I the "high trance play" would be the soma used to go into trances. Also, "
The S&M Porno's of the 80's were my adolesence."
That could mean how children's embryo's could be made so that they could have sex at a very early age.
I don't know, it's just a theory. |

A bit of info about the we're on drugs part, that was something system used to do live. I like how daron explains little things about system in these songs, like in 3005 when he's saying jesus and charles manson are nice, he said jesus and lucifer are lovely in one of the CD booklets, and I guess this song is kind of the expanded version of the "we're on drugs" bit. |

Okay, I think I got an idea about the song. I agree with deathgod, it's about religion, but also about how the complete rejection of religion is also foolish, like "cracks in the roads we lay, where the devil fell, the secrets have gone mad", So I guess it's called psychosocial because they hate every extremity of society. |

| Metallica – Invisible Kid Lyrics
|
I don't think this song is about the basic "invisible kid" in terms of being a loner at school, parents not paying attention to him, etc., it's about his thoughts and ideas never surface, and he's "invisible" in that his feelings don't matter to anyone. After that he just says stuff he feels in his brain only, and growing inside unknown to others. The last part I can really compare with,
"Ooh, unplugging from it all
Invisible kid floats alone in his room
Ooh, what a quiet boy you are
He looks so calm floating 'round and around in himself'
if anyone in my family listened to that line, it would make me extremely paranoid in that they know what goes on inside. Everyone thinks I'm just quiet and agree and accept everything, and I always agree to what people tell me, but in my mind I'm screaming "NO! that's idiotic!" but alas, arguing never helps anything. So after many years of only being deviant in your mind, that simple disagreement that it started out with turns into a schitzophrenic serial killer persona. |

This song's kinda like low man's lyric, except that song was "I'm a douchebag, but I'm sorry!" this song is just "I'm a douchebag". And by the way, how can you expect a band to go on for more than twenty years and not do something different? (by the way, this ranting is directed at scorn). James has said that this album was just a statement, really, and it is. But the album certainly isn't bad, I liked the way james used the weird shit in his psyche to make the songs, if you can't compare with that than apparently you only like listening about war and judicial systems, whatever, but hearing him rant about the same subjects for twenty years would get old. All the stuff they make kicks ass (okay, maybe not mama said, but that's it) from kill'em all to St. Anger, they're all different styles they use to express themselves, the steel drums sound and jame's broken voice go with the anger theme, I'm sure they didn't just make the whole album and went "hey, did you notice the drums sound just a little different?" they obviously did it for a reason. And if you're going to pick a time when they supposedly "died" pick load, because there was nothing wrong with the black album, just a ballad song or two, the rest of the album was still awesome like the old stuff. |
