| Steven Wilson – Hand Cannot Erase Lyrics

@[Ozymandias25:2644] I was thinking more along the lines of an abusive relationship. The hand represents the abuse, whether it's literally physical or not. Assuming gender norms and the female subject of the album, it's likely concerning her and a Stockholm-Syndrome-like complex that many develop in abusive relationship, accepting and justifying the abuse as just a part of the relationship. The literal e-mails home are saying, "everything is great!" Clearly, it's not. |

The song always warms me inside and makes me feel great when I listen to it, but after reading this post I just can't ignore that it quite likely could be the meaning. Great insight and interpretation, bud. I think I'll stick to feeling good with this song, but it just goes to show how great it truly is that Steven can twist an idea like this. |

Terrible lyrics, but as usual he makes up for it with the rest of the writing. I don't see how he can go from Where We Would Be, on the same album, to this, though. |

I honestly love the two songs so very much I'd be happy either way. I think Glass Arm Shattering fits a bit better aurally, though, hence the decision. |

I'm gonna have to agree with you. These people saying it's strictly about war or straining reach for a holocaust theme don't at all line-up with the album's concept. I think the lyrics, obviously detailing breaking war, are more a metaphor for one's actions when turned to the bottle. |

I interpreted Half Light as David "forgiving" her after her death, or forgiving himself for his reactive emotional lashing-out at her after she dies -- obviously to himself, but he still carries the guilt. The lyrics simply add a spiritual sense, that she had not yet moved on in order to help guide him in to better times. It kind of sums-up her entire part of their relationship: to show him the love he never had and help him grow strong.
First and third verse are her talking, second and fourth are him. |

Under the idea that this concept album is chronological, that would mean the girl is already dead. This is him coping with his loss of her. She was the closest thing to -- the only -- love in his life, and the fact that it felt just a tease to him before being wisked away is pain and grief dumped on top of an already loveless life. Obviously there were some complications in his relationship with her, but it's quite obvious she was still a very, very important, if brief part of his life, hence his anguish over her. |

This is like one of those fucking seminal moments of the universe. The stars aligned and shone on two men, and for one album they were blessed with perfection, creating one of the greatest pieces of music of all time. If only it could have been recreated with Damnation and Deliverance -- Damnation was alright, but can't even touch Blackwater Park.
They were meant to fucking make music together, and I'm sad they no longer do. |

I forget where I first heard the name Opeth, but at the time I was trying to force myself to open-up to new music, despite reallllllly disliking death vocals. I looked "Opeth" up on Limewire and this is the first song I downloaded. The raw emotion, frustration, intensity of it all make just "get" the vocals, too. This is metal done right. This is death vocals with a purpose and meaning. |

Yep, pretty straight-forward lyrics. I think it brings attention more to the fact that the longer we live, the harder it is to "break this trance." You're just so used to your routine, your mannerisms and your expected income in life that even if you want to, being someone else is just that -- it doesn't seem right. |

What's odd is that I'd be a little excited about this "new career." Why else would he do it? Instead, his song sounds very somber. He described the change as being "scary," as he was well-set in life as a company man -- which isn't the same thing.
That all said, my initial interpretation of this song -- half-described above and fitting with the lyrics -- really hit a strong note with me at my current stage in life, so I love this song regardless. |

I've had moments like this. To help explain it, at least from my perspective, it's kind of just a state of mind you're in that does the writing from your subconscious. More specifically, if I'm feeling really emotional, but have been, say, awake far longer than I should have been and am running on a second-wind high, I'll start writing incessantly. One giant flow of idea fueled by my subconscious, processed by emotion as my conscious self takes the back seat and lets my natural mechanics do the work. It just comes out automatically as you seemingly zone out. |

Huh, I really like the chorus. It feels so full of frustration, but endurance to push through a hard time (as if we're hearing a character pour his soul out to another, which would be the listener.) To each their own. |

This song literally brought me out of depression today. I was feeling like utter shit -- I feel like I've got nothing now or to look forward to; I don't know what I want in my life and it makes it even worse on me because I feel like I have little time to resolve these problems or be looked-on as a waste of time by my family. Then my playlist brought this song on.
Everyone hits their lows in life, and to look anywhere but up will only bring you down further.

Amazing song. It's kind of disturbing to think that some of the music that best pulls me in to it emotionally is the most unholy shit I've ever heard haha. Seriously, this makes me feel evil just listening to it, and the solo... holy god, it just feels like it seeps in to whatever form of soul I might have. Good shit. |

I haven't yet dissected and compared each stanza and line in an attempt to really know what's behind these lyrics, but from first glance it looks like it could be a relationship of some sorts where it simply isn't what it used to be. Some of the lyrics hint that it is, in form, still a relationship, but the essence of what it was is either gone or changed to the perspective of the narrator. |

Hurrah for the sentiment, but to me this song is another of the lyrically-weak songs of Light Grenades. The composition is fine, yet I can't get passed the lyrics to listen to this song on a regular basis like Kiss to Send Us Off, Light Grenades, Rogues, Paper Shoes, Anna Molly, and Pendulous Thread. |

I'm about to start a freakin' riot in here judging by all the other responses, but this has got to be Incubus' weakest song as far as lyrics go in my opinion. It's corny as hell, unimaginitive, corny as hell, corny as hell and please don't use "sing this song" as random lyrics ever again.
That being said, the only parts that really grate at me are the first two stanza, most irritatingly "at least we dig each other", followed by "*haugh haugh*". GOD. So corny.
Otherwise it's an alright song. I try to listen to it but find it hard because of what I've already bitched about. |

This song is so refreshing compared to the rest of the album. I'm hard torn between whether I like SCIENCE-era Incubus or their newer music. Their older stuff, such as SCIENCE, is so much more raw and feels closer to their essence. This song conveys that essence perfectly in that it sounds so natural to them and just rocks so hard compared to the other songs on the Light Grenades album.
I like the cleaner and less experimental sound of Light Grenades album over SCIENCE--I've never been a fan of the 90's grunge sound--but Light Grenades as a song is the raw badassery and acceptable lyricism of old Incubus with roughly the refined style of Incubus today. Huzzah!
Yea, I think the lyrics in a lot of their newer songs are utter crap. I just imagine every song having the lyrics of Light Grenades :) |

Such a good song. The majority of it is, considering it's genre, quite flowing. I love the turn it takes around 6:50 to a kind of acid sound as crimsonblackmaster pointed out, and the end is beauty in the sublime. |

This is one of the greatest IDM/Breakbeats songs I've ever heard. I'm not sure why no one has commented on it, but it deserves the attention.
I've never really riddled out the naming convention for this album, but Meltphace 6 doesn't seem to justify the almost foreboding mood dropped on to the listener. |

Wow, I never thought of it like that, cerealiscool. I've rarely listened to the album as a whole because of how experimental it is--I take my half and leave the rest. I've taken a personal liking to Btoum-Roumada so it means something completely different to me, but it does sound as though it could signify his dull and almost depressing existance at times. The high note at the end is him thinking "It's my birthday, right?", followed by this song. Penty Harmonium is the subsequent birthday, which, as you can tell, turns out to be quite sad. |

This song is so sad. Many people focus on Avril 14th's melody as the meloncholy of the album, yet I see it as brighter piece. This song, to me, signifies the end of something long; something beautiful, torn down by death or anger or hate--perhaps fighting. The song represents the somber period after the end. Reflection, regret, but with the last note a look in to the light and a push to move on. |

You'd think so, huh, Scott? The thing is, if you head over to the interpretations page for 'The Leper Affinity' you'll see that someone has already called that song the "vampire" song of Blackwater Park.
Basically, what I'm getting is that I don't want this well-written song to be given to vampires. No fucking vampires here. I already lost 'The Leper Affinity' to vampires; not again.

| Porcupine Tree – Sleep Together Lyrics

A lot of great insight, but I tend to look on the side of optimism and Wilson's ambiguous suggestions. 'Way out of Here' sounds a lot like the "protagonist" going through the final stages of frustrations; his decision is imminent as he can toil in this state no longer and everything is bearing down on him as if a train. Now or never.
Why that matters is if you look at this song with that in mind than it looks like this is the decision made. "Do or drown, do or drown in torpor" is, to me, "it's now or never; take your chance or live with this hell". Torpor seems far too similar to suicide to be considered the alternative to "doing" suicide. The ambiguity of some spots of the album would suggest that suicide is a looming escape as well, though.
"Leave no trace" and it's respective stanza is him saying good-bye to the lifestyle he felt so trapped in before. It's time for a fresh start, no torpor carried on to risk bogging him down--don't take that chance.
The chorus does sound very much suicidal, but with the potential of a fresh future the other stanzas give I'm going to debate that. "Let's sleep together" could be a gate to his new life--that is, closing the gate to his old. He's putting rest to his old life along with tormented "love" that's hinted at earlier in the album; putting to rest all those worries, the hatred and depression associated with it, and switching "off the future": once again putting rest to old worries. His future in refreshed.
"This fate, this is your escape. Leave here now, leave here, now it's over" would--by this time, I hope--seem straight-forward enough: it's time to carry through with things and close that gate.
This entire album did a good job of making me feel guilty as hell and at the same time has given me great inspiration--something Wilson is great at doing time and time again. My interpretation may just be me trying to tell myself to do just this, but hopefully it appeals to other optimists out there. |

| Opeth – Dirge For November Lyrics

Before really scrutinizing the lyrics of each song and pondering the meaning of Blackwater Park as a whole I believed the album to be the corruption and eventual loss of a once respectable man, his struggle towards such a state being the story told throughout the album, leading up to his full lapse into darkness: Blackwater Park. The corruption encompasses him and spreads misery about, affecting all around him.
Mind you, that was just from snippets of lyrics understood and the general atmosphere of the album. Unfortunately for my fantastic ideas and wild ideas the album seems more asunder, but that's the beauty of music: you make of it what you want. Ah, art--how I love thee passive state.
Thus, I can relate to your perspective, Zions. I've oft imagined a dark play following a rough plot when listening to the album. As for a rush, I don't get much of a rush in this song. Don't take that as a derogatory statement, though--this is easily one of their most moving peices, keeping me emotional engaged the whole way through. Mikael truly is a genius. |

The Romeo and Juliet theory sounds feasable with the questionable "wilted" line. He thinks he's a martyr, but in the end it was for personal gain--he didn't kill himself for his lover's sake; his joy came out of their time together. |

Though I've always seen Blackwater Park as a whole conveying the corruptions and unhealthy reverie of all that is sin, this song seems as though it could be something else to me than what seems obvious.
What seems to be the most popular interpretation is the murder of someone who seems to have wronged the narrator or simply sinned in general. "Break of morning, coldness lingers on; Shroud me into nightmares of the sun" is what the narrator has come to know, realization sinking in and his brooding thoughts stewing as he comprehends some seemingly vile act or/of character. The subject murdered seems to be close to the narrator in some way, making the guilt he feels even harder to ignore. No justification he can conjure relieves his guilt; no matter how many times he tells himself it was right, it feels wrong.
Where I kind of steer away is the belief that it could be suicide out of self-disgust and pity. Any other menacing persona could symbolize Death. The previous interpretation seems more appropriate in relation to the common appraisal of the album, and my own: corruption of man. Until now I haven't attempted to decipher each song and the album as a whole, though, so I'll get back here as soon as I've got a clearer picture and better idea. |
