Amanda Palmer – Ampersand Lyrics | 15 years ago |
MrsO is right here. the bit about the Ghetto boys proves it "i always shock them when i answer "hi, my name's Amanda'" literally "i am not some chick who's not even going to sleep with you. i am Amanda, i am my own person." |
Amanda Palmer – Leeds United Lyrics | 15 years ago |
ashen lady, hate to break it to you, but it turns out you're wrong. although thats always what i thought this song was about too.... amanda said in interview that it was about going to leeeds to see a boyfriend who wasnt all he cracked up to be, then getting into other things instead whilst in Leeds, like drinking. and then it became about football hooliganism. i guess because leeds united fans hang out in pubs in leeds. go figure. |
Amanda Palmer – Oasis Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Tosachi, fabulous call!! the freakiest, funniest song about unwanted pregnency i've ever heard :D neverbrain has it right i think |
Amanda Palmer – What's The Use Of Wond'rin' (feat. Annie Clark) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
oh my god i thought it was her singing all the way!! i nearly had a baby!!! especially after hearing Leeds United :P in the first Companion book, theres a bit about how much she hated doing "Carousel" as a school musical, so she wrote June is Busting out All Over in retribution. |
Amanda Palmer – Astronaut: A Short History of Nearly Nothing Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it seems to me to be abotu a love thats so far away, nto working, because either her or him is too famous/"high up" for the other... sad, undeniably. but apparently theres a lot of a bok of the same title by Bill Bryson. (spelling..?) it seemed a lot less personal after i heard that in an interview. shame. i always thought it was about her and Brian. but then, i always do. |
Amanda Palmer – Blake Says Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song breaks my heart. i thought the lyrics were about a sad lonely boy, and alaska being a cold and desolate place where he belongs... knowing about all the Velvet Underground in it is a bit sad though. apparently Astronaut has a heap of lyrics ripped from a book. i'm starting to question Amanda's personal, original, heartfelt songwriting. that being said, i still like this song a hell of a lot. |
The Dresden Dolls – Sorry Bunch Lyrics | 16 years ago |
did she really write it for brian?? thats WONDERFUL! aaw i always wish her songs are about him. naaaaaww!♥ ..."just as long as you were in my life Just as long as nobody knew that we were..." isnt it just beautiful!!!! |
Powderfinger – My Happiness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
to me, this song is about a person (bernarld) and his Someone Special. the someone has been away, and as soon as she comes back, bern realises how much she means and how much he likes the time they're together. possibly the morst-worded interpretation ive posted so far. this song is by best friend. sad really, but its just always been there. its so damn beautiful |
The Dresden Dolls – The Jeep Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
oops. my bad.in the Paradise dvd, its actually Amanda's Light Blue Volvo. i got confused cause Brian was driving it. not such an interesting spin after all. just the breakup song we know and love. sorry folks. |
Amanda Palmer – Strength Through Music Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i saw Amanda in Melbourne 3 weeks ago. to anyone reading this, please, GO AND SEE HER. even my dad is still singing this song. Amanda said she wrote it about a man going mad with a gun in America a few years ago. This is creepy... the day she went into the studio to record it, the newspaper headlines were all abotu the Virginia Tech massacre. 3 days before she came to Australia for the tour, a man went on a shooting rampage in an American mall. also notable was a couple in the front row at this show, who cried the whole way through this song. and may i say i don't blame them. |
Amanda Palmer – Another Year [2004 version] Lyrics | 16 years ago |
its all about procrastinating and putting things off for another year, for whatever reason. we all do it. what she's waiting another year to do remains a mystery to me. |
Amanda Palmer – Another Year [2004 version] Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Amanda Palmer – Ambien Lyrics | 16 years ago |
She played this song when i went to see her 3 weeks ago. it was beautiful; so personal the way she performed it. really have no idea as to the meaning, btu i'l take a stab... there's a few references to a man, and the line "make me a lesbian". so probably she is in the process of trying to get over someone. "make me feel ugly something with nazis would do the job perfectly" - also goes with that in a roundabout way i think. they are fantastic lyrics. arent all Amanda's? every other line, especially "how could i deserve to be crying here under the covers" - refers to the injustices taking place all over the world, and her feeling guilty for feeling sorry for herself. |
Amanda Palmer – Straight Lyrics | 16 years ago |
classic amanda songwriting about identity crisis/confusion/a degree of self-hatred. as demonstrated in the 6th stanza, people care for her, but she is convinced its "too late" to save her from whatever mad crisis she's found herself in. amazing. love love love it. |

The Audreys – Oh Honey Lyrics | 16 years ago |
WHY IS NOBODY COMMENTING ON THE AUDREYS?!? ok, they're pretty self explanatory songs, but still... anyway, this one is about someone developing a crush on someone they really shouldnt. i can completely relate. i love it to bits. |
Paul Kelly – Everything's Turning To White Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i think the "white" reference is about the wife feeling numb towards her husband. Ria and BruceBayliss have it right down i think. shit this song is so sad. i'm always so close to tears when i hear it. |
The Dresden Dolls – The Sheep Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
CHANGE OF PLAN: its about war. maybe "red brush...look i made america" is about blood, and america's involvement in a lot of wars. " dont try to care too much" is to me about people becoming unfeeling killing machines. the third stanza makes me think of some terrifying nightmare "counting sheep" and the music is consistent with a nightmare... in keeping with the war theme, PTSD maybe? "cutting by numbers is kinder" - genocide or slaughter "invest in one with a silencer. All of the studies say if theyre calm when they die they taste better" - this is a bit outside the square, but i see that as saying if you keep whatever events quiet (silent), and calm, it tastes better only because the media cant get to a story if its been silenced. the last stanza is definitrly about regret. regretting that one was in a war? maybe they lost their friends/family? but regret all the same. and thats my very crazy thought. |
Cold War Kids – Saint John Lyrics | 16 years ago |
BACK TO THE ACTUAL MEANING: a dude killed some guy who was coming on to/raping his sister. h then got chucked on death row and at the end, he's on trial trying to explain why he killed him. |
Cold War Kids – Passing the Hat Lyrics | 16 years ago |
well yeah, basically what everyone else hasd said. someone poor ("ragged coat sleeve") steals from the collection plate, because they think "The givers not knowing where their money's going Is as sinful as throwing away". which i totally agree with, despite being raised as a catholic myself. the theif then uses that money to buy a ticket to somewhere around the Baltic Sea. "...A small sacrifice to benefit one man's journey away from America's seas..." |
The Red Paintings – Sing Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Oh my god!!! "Sing", by the Dresden Dolls who i love with all of my Heart and Soul, covered by this band who i am really warming to... i feel a new obsession coming on... |
Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip – Thou Shalt Always Kill Lyrics | 16 years ago |
bahahahaha how funny!!! what would be hilarious is if someone did everything this song said, just to contradict the whole thing. i love the guidlines concerning things other songs say, e.g. "thou shalt not wish your girlfriend was a freak like me" poetry. |
The Dresden Dolls – Baby One More Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
must we go into what the lyrics mean? who cares? bahaha hwo funny is it!! even with the dresden dolls singing it, its still always going to be a britney spears song. that scares me but makes me laugh at the same time. and brian doing the high 'need to know' spontaneously on the automaticjoy version is a pisser man i love them |
The Dresden Dolls – Pierre Lyrics | 16 years ago |
how amazing is their chemistry when they play this song!! can't you feel it? i love the role playing too. amanda being the lion is verry sexy. its pretty amazing that brian can look her in the eye and just keep on singing. |
The Dresden Dolls – The Kill Lyrics | 16 years ago |
yes, i agree with everyone who's said its about america or being american. Rachelragamuffin had a great point with the flaws thing |
Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set – I Thought You Were God Lyrics | 16 years ago |
its so beautiful. the music makes it much sadder, too to me its about two young lovers, and i think he was in another relationship ("...is peeling back HER sheets...") an affair? either way she is head over heels for him, but grows up and sees there needs to be more. he hasn't done that growing-up yet, and still cries over it ("...speckled with your tears..") |
The Dresden Dolls – Such Great Heights (The Postal Service cover) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
to the creator of automaticjoy.com, i think i love you. seriously, if anyone hasn't checked it out, do. amazing song, and this version gives me shivers up my spine every time. its flipping beautiful. |
The Dresden Dolls – The Sheep Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
the "...cutting by numbers is kinder..." etc. is a bit like Bad Habit. maybe i'm the only on e that thinks that, but i love it. i love both songs. amazing. as to the meaning, i have no flipping idea. the raising a sheep from a lamb idea works, but i think i agree more with the 'last bit of hope' idea. don't ask me why. 'Cancerous Adversary', you're right, it reminds me of a creepy lulaby too. man its amazing. |
The Dresden Dolls – Ultima Esperanza Lyrics | 17 years ago |
despite the fast pace, this sounds like a really sad song. the internet dating idea works, and basically i agree with what everyone's said. it remends me of me a bit. how amazing is Amanda's voice at the end!! :O |
The Dresden Dolls – The Gardener Lyrics | 17 years ago |
besides the obviously dark meaning (whatever it may be), how sexy is this song!?! the bass, the continuous, stripped-back drumming, amanda's amazing voice going impossibly deep... how the two of them keep their hands off each other i will never know. |
The Dresden Dolls – Karma Police (Radiohead cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
whoever recorded this and put it on to automaticjoy.com, i love you. wow its amazing! everyone, check it out. |
The Dresden Dolls – The Jeep Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
watching the Paradise dvd, i discovered something. BRIAN HAS A LIGHT BLUE VOLVO!!!! that puts an interesting spin on things. |
Cold War Kids – Hospital Beds Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i love it. absolutely adore the Cold War Kids. i really like the ideas mentioned so far. the war veterans idea works and the filmclip backs it up. but i can't shake the feeling that this gorgeous song is about two terminally ill patients at hospital. the line 'bring your nieces and your cousins' sounds like they're on their deathbed. 'put out the fire' etc. makes me think the patient/s are in terrible 'firey' pain from their illness, and want it all to end. and 'vietnam fishing trips/italian opera' could be the things the patients are reliving or wishing they'd done in their lives, cause now its too late. man i love this song. |
The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics | 17 years ago |
mr.fergo i think you are totally right. about everything you said. right on! |
The Dresden Dolls – Dirty Business Lyrics | 17 years ago |
xdani961, i totally agree with you. and the making us think of some crazy idea fits in with the image of the band, like are they a couple or not... it keeps us guessing! its fun, if not infuriating. and i don't think they'll ever stop making us guess. or give us too many answers. in the meantime, speculation is always nice... |
The Rakes – We Danced Together Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i heard on the radio that this was about a couple in the iraq/lebanon war. the police state idea is fantastic and it works, but i think that the war idea just fits a bit better, especially with the second verse. either way, both ideas so far are pretty much ther same thing and they both mean this song is a beautiful, fearless love story as well as a fanbloodytastic song. love it |
The Dresden Dolls – Dirty Business Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i have a different idea... i think think it may be about posers: those people who say they like everything you like to try and impress you. i HATE posers. anyway i think i just get that idea from reading between the lines in this song. i'm not sure but thats what i definately think of when i hear it. also, the last verse sortof makes me think that maybe it's an anti-fame song? with all the people who try to know everything about Amanda or Brian. again with the poser theory. maybe its telling everyone to back off a bit?... just an opinion. |
The Dresden Dolls – Bad Habit Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i still can't function when i hear this song. i just stop, drop whatever im doing and don't move till its over. it's amazing. i'm not sure if its about actual self-mutilation or mentally torturing yourself, anything that causes you pain. but the lines pens and penknives take the blame crane my neck & scratch my name but the ugly marks are worth the momentary gain... when i jab a sharpened object in choirs of angels seem to sing hymns of hate in memorandum make me think its about physical self-harm. i still cannot get over the passion in Amanda's voice when she sings it. when i saw it on the paradise dvd i was bawling. i love them. |
The Dresden Dolls – Shores of California Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, i agree with you all. 1) stop heaping shit on tyraker, Amanda, everyone. free speech guys. 2) i think the song is about a sort of war of the sexes. for some reason i don't think this song is sarcastic. yes its a bit stereotypical re. gender, not normal Dresden Dolls territory (has anyone seen the paradise dvd?), but normally you can tell when Dolls songs are being sarcastic. another thing, this song gives me the shits cause its so poppy. i got scared when i heard it because if the Dresden Dolls, who are amazing and unique and i love them, start making more songs like this they're in danger of selling out. nightmare-inducing thought. thats what i have to say. |
Ben Lee – Ache For You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
the title, 'ache for you', gives it pretty much all away. i take it as a song about the angst of wanting someone so badly, walking past their apartment, not knowing why but really needing them. maybe the other person is already in a relationship. its a nice song with a really nice meaning; for soem reason i get really drawn in to the lyrics. |
The Dresden Dolls – Christopher Lydon Lyrics | 17 years ago |
to me, this is a song about unrequited love. one of my favourites on the paradise dvd i recently got (its beautiful, you've gotta check it out!!) it's about a crush, a silly but deep crush, like my current one on Brian Viglione. it's not their saddest song, but it can still hit you pretty hard just with the music and voice and tone, especially if you've ever been ripped down by a crush. i love the note she hits at the end of "i'll never stop saying christopher, christopher..." shes great |
Sigur Rós – Hoppípolla (English) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, the childhood innocence meaning works for me. and the video, woah i start bawling my eyes out within a minute of it!!! adore the song. sigur ros are great. so glad these lyrics are translated to english, SilentAssassin. it saved a lot of time for me. :) |
The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i was thinking about "velasquez"'s comment about menstrual cycle, (its a very cool piece of trivia) and the clock in the background of the song, and i can't believe i came up with this, but given those two things, i think its about periods. 'someday they'll find out about you too' could be a guy isnt actually a guy, or someone is pregnant... woah thats crazy. i still think its about nothing. still its something to think about... |
The Dresden Dolls – Gravity Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i agree partly with the modelling idea. Madkal was also on to a winner with the forces out of our control idea. honestly, i have no idea what its about. have spent many otherwise boring science lessons trying to figure it out, and have got nowhere yet. i'll post again if i ever do get an idea tho. |
The Dresden Dolls – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
a few months ago i found out they covered 'hallelujah' and since then it was my goal to find it. then i heard it on 'automatic joy'. part of me waas jumping out of my skin with excitement that i'd found it, part of me was so overcome by the greatness of it, and another part was crying inside coz it was SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL!!! oh my god i knew amanda had a sexy voice but i didnt know it could be that good, and then mixed with those words and the piano was out of this world. amazing. everyone go and listen to it!! o i could crap on about the dresden dolls and hallelujah all day. big love. |
The Dresden Dolls – First Orgasm Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this is one of the best songs to demonstrate Amanda's ability to convey a story with just the tone of her voice. it's a song about lonliness as far as i can see. and masturbating, obviously. but the fact that she's doing it because she's that lonely. the last bit where the drums kick in and she's saying she could last a week on her own, then YELLING and begging with so much passion in her voice for someone to hold her, it really gets me. again with the voice thing. man she's got a sexy voice. is it just me that thinks that? |
The Dresden Dolls – Delilah Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think this may be a straightforward (but impossibly beautiful/sad/bloody amazing) song about a friend in a bad relationship. or maybe Delilah is really schizophrenic, and part of her thinks she's in a relationship, when she really isn'? sort of like an imaginary boyfriend scenario taken to the extreme. just a crazy theory. but i am really intrigued by tokabi's idea of delilah being amanda, and taineyah's idea of the boyfriend being the piano. crazy theory, but crazy theories always go down well with me. i still can't get over how gorgeous the song is from the second chorus(?) onwards. fucking amazing. |
The Dresden Dolls – Blueprint Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song could be about anything. it literlly could, you could take it as about sex or government or money... anyway i love what they did with this song with just their 2 instruments. and brian sang/yelled. i luv brian. |
Powderfinger – The Day You Come Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, i reckon you're all about right. i heard it was about johnny howard winning too many elections. good song |
Powderfinger – Private Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i like the michael hutchence idea. INXS and the finger are two of my all-time favourite bands and this is a kick-ass song. i'd never thought of this song being about suicide, but it makes perfect sence. well done "freak" |
