Dropkick Murphys – A Few Good Men Lyrics 17 years ago
i definitely agree with palooka about this being a union song. 'in-fighting' comments above apply to unions...

Good Riddance – Mother Superior Lyrics 18 years ago
Amazing song. Can't believe I'm the first to comment.

I wanted to correct the lyrics, starting in the second to last verse:

and an abominable hemisphere
would perpetuate a hostile atmosphere
call it a threat
to national security
callin' it just a poor-sick face
one more place,
to export cheap labor

Strung Out – Party in the Hills Lyrics 18 years ago
"Having fun"? Uh, could you point out the "fun" in this song? The lyrics sound more depressing than fun to me.

Also, to me "the hills" could mean a few things... What do you think Jason meant?

I think this is a sad and cynical song about how life is spent for a drug user - tragically, "The life we choose is how we'll fall, The way we destroy is the art of it all." Whether this life we live is destroyed with drugs, or in some other way, is our only choice. This is the drug abuser's point of view after years of abuse.

Who would've thought that a band named 'Strung Out' would make an anti-drug song (purposely or inadvertently)?

Strung Out – Novacain Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm surprised no one has commented because this is a really powerful song.

I think it's about undergoing a gradual change that strays from one's core values, realizing this and the inertia associated with most gradual life changes ("concrete shoes"), and then saying to oneself - "I need to change today or else I'm headed down a path I don't want to." This song marks a turning point for the vocalist, if he follows through with his conviction.

Propagandhi – Anti-Manifesto Lyrics 18 years ago
"Word acrobatics performed with both harness and net."

To understand this I think you have to look at the 2 preceding lines: "Consider this critic a cretin. Resting on laurels (completely invented)." He's saying the wrong kind of fan: 'don't listen to the message of our songs, just consider me an idiot, repeating what so many have already said."

In this context, I think "word acrobatics performed with both harness and net" means, to the person who likes their music for the WRONG reasons: 'we just play with words so that with harness and net we can get more fans just like you." The Rage Against the Machine analogy cited above also fits well here.

Either way, at the end of the song, he says "it don't really matter cuz nothing's ever felt as right as this." Which, all preachiness aside, is the only way great music has ever been made.

The rest of the lyrics (not posted above):

"hope, perseverance, a vision (some doubt). green ink, a 26 oz., a bad case of big-mouth. a sum of our parts and i've never laughed harder. a song in our hearts and i've never laughed harder. it don't really matter cuz nothing's ever felt as right as this. (by the way, i stole this rif)"

Youth Group – Last Quarter Lyrics 18 years ago
The lyrics don't give you much to go on, but I think the clue lies in the second line "It's hard to know your body when you don't know where it starts and the drugs end."

I think it's about drugs - someone who is lost completely in an addiction - despair is written all over this song:
"I want to cry so much it hurts"
"If I prayed I'd pray for order
Or at least just one more day"

Aqueduct – Hear Design Lyrics 18 years ago
muaddib420 I couldn't agree more, although the "420" in your name makes me question what I just said.

"anyways, it's "well it must be a SIGN, that my heart is my own design"... makes a lot more sense, to me anyways."

Yes, SIGN is right.

I think what makes this song great is the breakdown at the end of the song - with a little less than a minute left - it's brilliant how the music from the rest of the song all comes together.

Aqueduct – Lying In The Bed I've Made Lyrics 18 years ago
The first few times I heard this song I subconsciously assumed that it was about "LAYING in the bed I've made." But it clearly is about "LYING in the bed I've made" ... "I've been a liar all my life."

A very clever pun.

Misfits – Hybrid Moments Lyrics 18 years ago
I echo a comment from way above - it's about sex!The "moment" is comprised by those few seconds of orgasm. It can be applied more broadly to any fleeting moment of euphoria. "Moments like this never last" alludes to the feeling - experienced by every person at some point - of not being satisfied, or only being satisfied for a short period of time, after experiencing one or a series of these moments.

But what makes us care about these lyrics is the heart with which it's sung by Danzig... what a powerful song.

Youth Group – Why Don't The Buildings Cry? Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song is about the sadness of very sick patients and their loved ones, many of whom might never be under the sky again when it rains. It seems as though the vocalist is a visitor at the hospital (although he does say “my darkest hour,” which hints that this is probably a loved one or, perhaps, himself). The “concrete sky” is the hospital ceiling and the countless floors of “sandstone and steel” above it. Why doesn’t the building cry at all the sorrow it has witnessed? I don’t know what to make of the train, but I think the vocalist is expressing frustration at the outside world, in which so many people take their health for granted. I think the overall messages are: (1) don’t take your health for granted - respect it, (2) don’t spend all of your life enveloped in its trivialities, and most importantly (3) try to empathize with people who are suffering, because it is humane and it will make you a better person. The wisest man I ever knew once said: “I think the most important part of being a good person is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes.” After seeing many tragic situations in hospitals, this may be one of the most difficult things to do, but I couldn’t agree more.
