The first few times I heard this song I subconsciously assumed that it was about "LAYING in the bed I've made." But it clearly is about "LYING in the bed I've made" ... "I've been a liar all my life."

Are you serious? No one "lays" in bed (unless you're talking about doing it to another person); people lie in bed. Yes, it's a clever pun on lying as in the intransitive verb to be on one's back as well as to deceive someone else.
Love the first couple of lines, I mean, "I've been a father to you all in spite of what you heard, and for the most part, I've been a perfect stranger, too."
