| Also, I think he actually says "so have you got the goods?" Not guts, lol. With his amazing accent though, it's kind of hard to tell. My god. The song is barely a day old and I am addicted. Why. | |

Yes, this is a song about wanting someone back. But not like that. This is a heartbroken person, but he's finally ready to move on without baggage. He was hurt, and you get the feeling that he tried to move on with someone, but it did not end well because of his post-heartbreak hang-ups ("Do you ever get the fear that you can't shift the tide that sticks around like something's in your teeth?"). Maybe this time *he* broke the heart of this rebound girl, who he is now actually genuinely longing for. That's what this song's about.+ She was hoping for more; he was just trying to fill the hole his broken heart left, and that selfishness hurt her in the process. But he wants her for real now, and he's hoping that she still wants him ("So have you got the guts? Been wondering if your hearts still open.."). The song gives too many hints that the person he wants to crawl back to isn't the one who originally broke his heart. Why would he ask the old lover if her heart is still open? Why would he flirt with her ("simmer down and pucker up.") And mostly: why would he say "we could be together if you wanted to"? He's asking the new girl this, not the old lover. I love how the whole song is a clever way of him begging her to give him another chance. It's very coy. He says "was sort of hoping that you'd stay" and in this confession he admits that "the night's were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow." He's not trying to make excuses, but he regrets how he originally treated her. He wants only her now! "...maybe I'm too busy being yours to fall for somebody new. Now I've thought it through." + the sexiest arctic monkeys song ever created. |

| Interpol – Memory Serves Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
A man - from the sounds of it experienced - is trying to seduce his woman. And from the sounds of it, she's inexperienced and he likes it that way. Don't know why, but with this song I picture a woman- not really a girl- who's a virgin, but her man is okay and patient with her lack of experience. Paul Banks uses the metaphor of dust (unused, just sitting there) to hint at her inexperience ("all kinds of dust are gonna keep me satisfied.."). Maybe he wants to help her cross that line of intimacy? ("..no matter what, we're going to keep you occupied") When the song says "but only at your place," I think that he wants to teach her; to put her face-to-face with the reality of what he's doing, so she can't ever really flee it, and so that she can learn from it. It's not that he just wants to get her into bed so he can say he did it...I think he might have feelings for her ("I only ever try to make you smile"), but at the same time...he wants that pleasure of being the first. He's waited without complaining ("it would be no price to pay") because he likes her. And eventually he gets her. To me, I see it as him being her first ("it's over....what does it feel like?"). That's what the "special memory" is. It's not necessarily special for *him*, but he knows that it's supposed to be a "special memory" for her. When Paul sings "I'll wait to find," I think it's the man sort of wondering what her next move will be. She's been intimate with him, but is she still reluctant? Is it going to take him just as long to get her again? Will she finally accept being his lover? That lyric "it would be no price to pay" maybe has a double-meaning. It refers to his patience, but maybe he's also talking to her and trying to reassure her that she didn't do something wrong or dirty; she didn't pay any kind price ("it would be no price to pay. We began this our way"). She just made love. He hopes it isn't going to be as hard to get her again, hence that lyric "you don't have to say that you'd love to, but baby please that you'd want to..." Ultimately, I see this song as a love song. But it's a love song about sex. He's a sexual man who wants his lover to be the same as he is. |

| Radiohead – Jigsaw Falling into Place Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
A night out at the dance club, and there comes the point where you make that so-called connection with someone else. And despite the alcohol, flashy lights, loud music and the smoky haze, you tell yourself there is indeed a connection and all these thoughts and temptations run through your mind. From the male's perspective, he's trying to inconspicuously make his way to his chosen female. Success: She's responding, and after she's decided that her male is acceptable, he keeps making his move. It's a struggle because "the whole place is on a mission," where the goal is pure sex, but he's getting closer at achieving his goal. He just has to pretend for the sake of his female. However, he encounters a bump on the road....His girl is drifting away, maybe to another man on a similar mission? Yes... Then it hits him. They're all playing a game in that disco, and the chances of him winning are slim. Why can't he ever win? Losing is his constant nightmare that he just can't seem to wish away. As he's left on his own in the dark, crowded club, his early delusions of a connection have come full circle; the jigsaw pieces of his mind have fallen into place: He never had a chance. |

| Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
this could be a love song. to me it's about someone depressed, trying to come to acknowledge his/her problems, but at the same time not doing much about it, just telling the other person, "when it's all over i'll let you know." started listening to phoenix when i began to acknowledge my own problems, yet did nothing about it. it hit me hard. maybe it was all in my head, but so many of their songs seemed to carry this theme. |

| The Outfield – Your Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
As a writer, this is one of the songs that fascinate me to the point where I've come up with a whole back story. Josie might be this guy's girlfriend, but she's not his soul mate, or true love, or whatever it is we want to call it. The other woman is. She's also the older one. I always picture him telling her to come over, 'cause Josie's gone for a few days. The other woman is probably saying "What? I'm only good for you when Josie's gone?" and he flirts with her, probably pouting to her, making excuses and telling her she's the only one for him ("so many things that I want to say"), and that what he's got with Josie's not the same, hence him throwing a flirting line like "you know I like my girls a little bit older." But this other woman loves him so she keeps going back. And he loves her too- from the lyrics, it seems like she's the only person he can trust or talk to. Sometimes it doesn't have to be about lust between the two of them because they've got a deeper kind of love. I see that as the two kinds of love mentioned in the chorus...So yes...He wants to use her love while Josie's away, but he also doesn't want to lose her forever. He loves her a lot, and he even gets nervous with anticipation when he's alone with her. He's constantly declaring his love for her but it's confusing, because obviously he's with Josie. He's a contradiction. That's probably why the other woman left him: he sucks at commitment and communication, lol. The line "just 'cause you're right it don't mean I'm wrong" makes me picture a little bit of an argument between the two of them after they make love and have their reunion. It's the best lyric because it makes the whole story. The other woman scolds him for hurting Josie by keeping her on the side. And he probably shrugs it off and tells her something like "you wouldn't understand the thing between me and Josie, so mind your own business and don't try to give me a lecture." And when it's time for Josie to leave, he tells her that lyric "as you leave me, please would you close the door and *don't* forget what I told you." As in he still loves her, but he can't leave Josie and go back to her. Why? I don't know. "Just 'cause you're right it don't mean I'm wrong," means he knows that he knows he's doing something wrong, but he's not going to stop. Maybe he feels like he owes it to Josie to be with her even though he doesn't truly love her? Maybe he can't be with the other woman exclusively because he's afraid of disappointing her and only her? She means so much to him that he doesn't want to get too close and screw it up? It's the part of the story I can never figure out. Sigh...I need to put a story together all based on this song. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Secret Door Lyrics | 16 years ago |

...Does anyone else take the fools on parade to be the famous themselves, rather than photographers or media-stalker types? I think that makes more sense, especially when he says "fools on parade cavort and carry on for waiting eyes," with the fools being the celebrities making their way down a red carpet for photographers and other fame whores waiting for them (the waiting eyes). Also, I think Alex gives more hints that celebrities themselves are the fools on parade: they "frolic and fuck about" as they live their fabulous lives, hoping to get a picture taken by at least one of those waiting eyes. And what gets him about this particular female is that she plays the part of one of those fools on parade so perfectly. But after he knows her more, he sees that she's not a fool on parade, but she willingly and almost eagerly plays the part, because "it's better that than get a reputation as a miserable little tyke." In reality, her thoughts are like hey-I'm-with-you-but-I'm-not-like-you when it comes to the celebrity/public situation. To me, the rest of the lyric's meanings are about his amazement at her façade, and how he feels like "a butler pushing on a bookshelf and unveiling the unexpected" when he finds out that it's all a show ("how could such a creature survive in such a habitat?"..."she's saying nothing, she's just giggling along"). The best part of it is that despite all the bullshit of the exterior, the two of them are super cool and air-tight on the inside. He's smitten ("Even if they were to find us, I wouldn't notice. I'm completely occupied") and she is too ("..But you're daft to think she'd care") and they could both care less about who is or looks like a fool on parade. Every time I hear this tune, I flash back to those pictures belledujour pointed out, lol. Probably my Humbug favorite. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Catapult Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
The guy, in short, is a dick. And he's a dick to a girl that actually likes him a lot. She has feelings for him, so she can't leave him, even though he treats her like garbage at times. I can see her actually sleeping with him, because she believes if she does, he will like her more. But all he can think about is how he just got laid, and pays no attention to her feelings. She could feel used by him, and he could care less. He's cold-hearted like that, hence "his heart was cut out of the same stone that they used to carve his jaw, its impossible not to feel inferior." That feeling of inferiority is what catapults her into hissing misery. She feels high when he acts like he's paying her attention, then feels disgustingly low when he pushes her aside, like a broken toy. Then when she's on the verge of coming to the realization that he's really not a good person for her, he turns on the charm, and she's back in the palm of his hands. All he has to do is touch her, kiss her, talk to her...And she's his all over again. That's extinguishing her chance of escape. "Both sides, in softly came the growl from both sides," I think means the way he lures her in. He's friggin' sex on legs, but he is bad. There's a TV show called 'The Vampire Diaries' and the character of Damon could very well be the subject of this song. Everything that the man in this song has done to the woman, the Damon character has done to the women on that show. It's like this song was written about him, lol. |

| U2 – Beautiful Day Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This just played on my iPod and now I've burst into tears. I'm not in a good place and this song just highlights that I've got to get myself out of this hole, but...I can't. Every single word has a meaning to me. There's no space to rent, I'm out out of luck, I'm in a rut, but I'm still here, in this town. It's all over me. And I don't know where the hell to go to get myself out of this. But I know I'm not a hopeless case. I'm waiting for my flood, so I can finally be happy and see a beautiful day without getting mad at life because I can't enjoy it like everyone else around me is. I know I'm not a hopeless case. |

| Alicia Keys – You Don't Know My Name Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Takes me straight back to my last year of college, where I lived out my meaning of this whole entire song! That’s when I walked into the job of my dream guy. Like the song said, there was something special about him. He was gorgeous…that’s all I really knew about him at the time. But I had to keep seeing him with my own eyes. He didn’t even have to talk to me. I talked to him 4 times, strictly because I was a customer at his office who needed help. Other than that, he never came up to me, and to this day I wonder if he ever noticed that I was secretly attracted to him. I was like Alicia in the song, telling myself things like “if he only took notice of me,” and “he’s missing out on a good thing.” In the song, Alicia plays out their relationship in her head. Then she tells herself to call him, and tell him how she feels. After that, she talks to him and they agree to meet up. Sometimes when I listen to the song I imagine the phone call’s all in her head. She’s playing out what she’d do if she really got him on the phone. In the end, they never meet, and he never knows how she feels about him. Other times I think that she really did call him and confess her feelings. I felt like Alicia in the song: I had to tell him, even if he didn’t know who I was. I saw him outside of work once and I thought it was a sign. I had to let it out. It didn’t play out like Alicia’s phone call though, lol. I did say, “I feel kind of silly doing this,” like she says in the song. He recognized me, and when I told him everything, he smiled. He said "Really?" and seemed too surprised at first to be flattered or humiliated. That’s why I wonder if he ever noticed that I was checking him out. He smiled at me, then congratulated my project, and grabbed me for the most innocent hug ever. All the time I pictured myself telling him I never expected him to say or do anything, but after I told him and he didn’t do or say anything, it made me sad. The feeling for him was probably nothing, but he made my year, and he had no idea. I moved out of town the next day, and I haven’t seen him since. And yes: He never knew my name. Alicia takes me back to that time. In the six minutes of the song I can play out all those months I was hung up on him. You gotta feel this. You have to. |

| Pete Yorn – Paradise Cove Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Love this so much. I always think of different meanings. Most of the time I think it's a letter to himself: Someone who can't commit because every time he tries, he convinces himself out of it because he's somehow led himself to believe that it's "never enough." It's never enough to the point where he can't even reciprocate the other person's feelings.."you want so much to tell her, but it feels like a lie." And although it sounds like he's talking about another person, I think he's talking to himself; almost as if he was looking in a mirror, confronting his inability to commit: "you want so bad to have meaning, but you're empty and draining...." It's like he's angry at himself (if that makes any sense) for being that way. So where the other person sees the potential of love, he doesn't see anything beyond the present. That's why it could be bad for them both: His life is disconnecting where hers is intersecting. On the other hand, he could very well be referring to a woman who he has fallen out of love with, and has left him actually wanting to be alone. Or it could be about a woman who left him because she couldn't commit, and even though he knew this about her, he stayed with her until it had no choice but to end. The song is just beautiful. Period! |

| The Beatles – All I've Got to Do Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Not even close to being married...but this will be my (and my husband's) main song :) At first you hear a man bragging about how much his lady loves him; so much so that she will do whatever he wants, as long as he tells her. But then he says, "And the same goes for me. Whenever you want me at all, I'll be here, yes I will, whenever you call. You just gotta call on me." That part always gets me teary-eyed! Combine it with the first part of the song, and it perfectly describes a true love match. A nice, little team in love, lol. You can call the words cheesy and overly simple, but they're really not. It's only a raw, honest description of two people in love. I love the guitar too. It's a very Motown-inspired tune, but it also stands out. One of my top 10 favorite Beatles tunes. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Dangerous Animals Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Hmm, it took me the second go-around at the album to formulate my theory on this tune: Masturbation? "Been fighting with my sheets And nearly crying in my sleep Yes, I'm battling that well-told gripe, The most frustrating type." Combined with the rest of the lyrics— especially "the night, it fidgets through/ the thoughts will soon revert to you"— it honestly sounds like a guy lying in bed, and his mind is "going" to a place that reminds him of the woman who drives him crazy, in a good way. He's probably also thinking that what he's doing is taboo ("and of course the audience of frighteners and fiends")? I'm not a guy, so I can't detail sexual frustration in males lol. All I know is that 'rubbing one out' is usually a way to erm.... relieve tension? And as for "let's make a mess lioness," I flashed back to that scene in "There's Something About Mary." Can't say much else, lol! |

| Joy Division – Shadowplay Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Why do I think this song is about the narrator stalking his unrequited love, and then witnessing her death? He says "To the center of the city where all roads meet, waiting for you," as if he's only looking to see her arrive, but not talk to her. Then he says "To the depths of the ocean where all hopes sank, searching for you." Hopes sank. As if he knows he has no chance with this person, but he still follows her and wants to know about her. Eventually, he follows her to the room that had the window in the corner. He sees her get killed in the dark ("in the shadowplay acting out your own death"), but he doesn't do anything. He let them use her for their own ends. And he sat there and witnessed it, with shock, and still didn't do anything. And maybe he says "I did everything I wanted to," because he resented this person for not reciprocating these feelings? Maybe deep down he thought she got what she deserved and that's why he didn't speak up as she was getting killed. He wanted her to feel the kind of pain she was causing him. Not being with her felt like death. And now when he says "in the center of the city in the night, waiting for you," the night could symbolize that she's dead. Although he saw her die, and didn't do anything, it doesn't mean he's not stopped loving her either. What a morbid interpretation, lol. I've never had a meaning for this song until today. It just came to me as I was listening to it. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning Lyrics | 16 years ago |

You totally make a better point, DeeWillDo! It makes more sense that way. I think the ice cream man being aggravated by her on rainy afternoons means that she loves to play games. She's a button-pusher. Maybe the ice cream man doesn't work hard on rainy afternoons, but she still wants her damn ice cream, who cares if it's raining and there's no business to be generated..She's inconsiderate. I'm picturing one of those girls who likes to think of herself as mature, but when the time comes to think seriously, or when she doesn't have the upper hand and something doesn't go her way, she is reduced to the pathetic, childish bitch she is. With that said, I see a connection between this song and "Fire and the Thud." That's about being with a girl who likes playing with a guy's feelings, and he calls her out on it. She's a "welcome, threatening stir," and she's a "teasing of the fire." Maybe the rest of the songs in Humbug will have a similar theme?? Why's Alex writing these songs, I don't know. I thought he was in a happy long-term relationship. Creative, that's all. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Not about an ex-girlfriend, but about falling for a bad girl. At first it's good fun being with her: She's kind of crazy, and he likes her hard-to-get games (that's crying lightning). The line, "her past-times consisted of the strange, the twisted and deranged," means she likes messing with this guy's mind. She's all over him one day, but fighting him the next. Toying with his feelings is fun for her. In the song's context, "past times" means hobbies, or things to do for fun— not a past experience. He knows the girl is bad news, but he goes with it ("I love that little game you call crying lightning"). I think he tried to avoid getting involved with her ("the next time that I caught my own reflection it was on its way to meet you, thinking of excuses to postpone") because he knew she played games, but he was too attracted to her... However, as he spends time with her, he realizes her games aren't fun anymore. Now he sees her attitude as mean and conceited with no regards for his bruised feelings ("..stood and puffed your chest out like you never lost a war..") He doesn't want to be a brokenhearted wimp about realizing she's really a bitch, so he doesn't say anything and holds in his emotions ("..I try so not to suffer the indignity of a reaction.."), but he does conclude that being her boy toy and emotional punching bag is not what he wants to be. She's been a hard pill to swallow, but even if it was fun in the beginning (she was "uninviting, but not half as impossible as everyone assumes"), he doesn't want to play crying lightning anymore. In the end, he's changed his mind: "I hate that little game you had called crying lightning." This is so good. I love how Alex Turner's given a name to the teasing games some girls play, and kind of uses it as a metaphor to show how guys can also get hurt. Arctic Monkeys back, and still really fucking good. No surprise there, though. |

| Pete Yorn – Sleep Better Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I've always imagined the two people in this song being a married couple, not just boyfriend and girlfriend. It just seemed too heavy to be a boyfriend and a girlfriend. It's a rocky marriage, and I've always seen it as one where the couple isn't talking out their issues (most likely jealousy) so it has become really tense in the house. But they stay together, because "they won't feel better alone" and they're probably meant for each other. They're "twice in every way, they lead a life you could forget.." so they live together, but lead different lives. And still, they're aware of their bumpy marriage, and probably even wonder about straying from each other, and being unfaithful with the temptation (competition) they see around them, but they never go along with it. ("They took the time to reflect, even as the competition is breathing every day.") To me, the wife probably wants to mend things ("calls him everyday"), but the husband is cold, rude and crappy at communication. So she tries to go with his flow and give out the same attitude, even though it breaks her heart ("Don't try, you'll never win. And you could never be him.") Damn, this is an amazing song. Where does Pete Yorn get his inspiration? |

| Coldplay – The Goldrush Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I love this song, I think it's about a man trying to please his woman and get her whatever she wants. He works hard every day, but she wants everything he's working for and more. The song uses a man going on a goldrush as symbolism. She really wants material things, marriage, lots of commitment and devotion.. So he feels this pressure to get her whatever she asks for, and she's asking for a lot! She probably calls him telling him that she'll only take the best, hence "What good is the metal if the metal don't shine," and "bring me back a ring 'cause I really want one." And he's going out of his way to get her what she wants, but they're both in a goldrush: She's in a goldrush to get whatever she can out of him, and he's in a goldrush to get whatever he can out of the world (making money at work, etc..), so he can go and give it back to her. And Will sings, which is all gravy with me, because he's great :) |

| Arctic Monkeys – The Bakery Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
a settee is a couch, a sofa. read these words without the music and find that they're very revealing, and kind of personal. usually i think of an independent narrator with a lot of the monkeys' songs, but this is clearly alex turner talking. and he's talking about love, temptation, and fame. this is a guy who on a daily basis sees females of every type throwing themselves at him; some that catch his eye, and when he does see one, the first thing he can think is how his fame could affect his interaction with the girl. and alex thinks the girl keeps on looking at him because of his status. so he wishes he had just seen the girl in a common, standard place where he's a regular guy, and she's a normal girl and they're just both attracted to each other without any pre-conceptions: a friends house, the post office, or the bakery. then the last line is probably the most revealing and the saddest to me: "if i'd seen you in the bakery, then you probably wouldn't have seen me." he admits that if he was just a regular guy, she probably wouldn't have been attracted to him in the first place, and ultimately it's his fame and status that drive the attraction of all these girls and women to him. and there's one in every town there to tempt him, but then he realizes that she doesn't really want him. the thought process is really a cycle :( |

| Ladyhawke – Magic Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
To me it's not even about a relationship; it's all about unrequited attraction. She has feelings for him, but he really only wants to shag and dash. She met this guy who was obviously from out of town, and she was interested right away, letting her attraction cloud the fact that he didn't feel the same way. Like you said, it's all in her head. One journey for you and it's worth it- The journey for him is that he's on vacation and he'd score with the girl in the band. A vacation well worth it, he'd say! One journey for me and it's magic- The journey for her is that this guy from out of town falls for her, and they'd get to be together; a nice, magical, happy ending. I could have written this song, it perfectly captures my experience with a guy who was over the Atlantic. He was nice and my mind wandered, but in the end he was just a guy on vacation. Man, guys can be real assholes sometimes. But Ladyhawke is great and her album is amazing. Go buy it now. |

| MGMT – Electric Feel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The lyrics are a surreal look at a man's perspective when he's in full sexual pleasure mode. Where instead of being the one giving pleasure, he's receiving it. Pretty sure in the first verse he's referring to the woman pleasuring him with her hands. And the woman is supposedly something amazing, "she got the power in her hand to shock you like you won't believe," and maybe she's some sort of sex goddess to his inexperienced mortal because she's "going to teach" him and has done this before too ("all along the western front, people line up to receive"). Everything she does to him gives him an "electric feel." If you read way into it, this is a dirty little song, lol. |

| The Verve – Appalachian Springs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Richard Ashcroft's words are so abstract...I always just tell myself they're about "life," 'cos I don't totally understand them all the time. To me this song is about not being a point in your life that you like. You're stuck, alone, and you know where you want to be and what you want to do, but do you know how to get there, and if you're even supposed to get there? That's why he says "I saw myself, and it wasn't quite right." And regardless, you think of what you want to become, but you're still not sure. "Slippin' out, slippin' in and out of dreams." I don't know....I love this song. It's one of those perfect Verve songs. So English sounding too. |

| Bruce Springsteen – Glory Days Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I've listened to this song for years now, but today on the way to work I got how sad it is. I couldn't help but to think of myself. Get me in a group with my old friends and someone (usually me, if I've had a few drinks) will bust out a yearbook or a memory and start talking about the "old days." We're not even 25 yet, so I guess rmcd0494 is right...Except we're not dicks, and we certainly weren't popular, so we didn't really have any "glory." We mainly just talk about crap we used to do: copying homework, acting stupid and just talk about silly stuff. The song is true though. Those who did have "glory" usually are the ones who recount story after (boring) story. And that gets old. And he's right, too...as much as you don't want to talk about your younger days, you most likely will. |

| Coldplay – Death and All His Friends Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
That end chant is great...For so long, Coldplay songs have been so sad, the kind of music that keeps you company when you're feeling miserable and low... And yeah, we all get into those dark moments, but to hear the guys who write about those dark moments best say that they don't want to be in that depressed hole forever...It's the perfect evidence that this is a new type of point of view for the band... It's a tie with all of "Yes" for my favorite track of the album. I wish I could've heard this song about five months ago. I really could've used it. |

| The Last Shadow Puppets – Black Plant Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I haven't entirely figured out why I think this song is about two different stories of adultery or cheating, but that's my theory.. In the first verse, it seems like a girl cheated on her guy (she's been misbehaving), she told him and he is extremely pissed and probably told her to get lost (he hadn't deal with how you felt with ways that suited you). She wants to apologize to him by writing him a love letter, but she knows that letter is probably not going to work because she cheated, and that's that. The second verse is a man who is probably not feeling satisfied in his current relationship situation, hence, "tenderness aplenty, but that wasn't what you craved." So then temptation greets him like a naughty friend ("desire starts to make demands") and he strays, even thought he narrator warns him, "you'd be a fool to make your plans with her." So that's why the chorus says "why would you say sorry?" Can you really apologize after you've cheated and have your significant other understand where you're coming from? It's why the girl never sent the love letter; it wouldn't have made the guy feel any better! It's one of those few things you can honestly control and to do it is just wrong, so an apology after cheating is kind of worthless because you had a choice over what you were doing. I think "when it's just one of many bullets you will bite while waiting for a ray of light," means that after the guilt of cheating sets in, and they've apologized, they will sit there (in pain from the guilt) trying to justify their behavior. ...And I guess after all of that, I still have no clue why the song is called "Black Plant." |

| The Last Shadow Puppets – The Meeting Place Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I'm partial to the words at the beginning of the song...It's so abstract, yet I can still understand what he means (or at least I think I do!). "He's worried she's waiting in his dreams to drag him back to the meeting place..." I love love love that part! He's not exactly worried, but he just wants to put that nostalgia behind because if he keeps thinking about this woman, it makes him feel heartbroken. If that's what he means, then I friggin' get it. Been there, done that! Then there's the woman, who "tried so hard to steer away from the meeting place, but her heart had led her there." And yeah, her heart led her there, but she still probably screwed this guy over because he had stronger feelings. I'm not sure about the subliminal metaphor with the way Alex wrote this song. Sometimes I think he tries to be cryptic and poetic about little details and events (kind of like "The Bakery" and "Too Much Too Ask") and this song could be that too. Probably could be about some girl he had a fling with, and he somehow felt rejected by her. But I've been wanting to know how Alex and Miles wrote these songs. Did they split the writing in every single song, or was it just like, "I write one song, you write the other"? Whatever the thing, this song is still awesome. But I already said that, so sorry this was long! |

| The Last Shadow Puppets – The Meeting Place Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Not 100 percent sure what this song is about, but I'm listening to it right now while reading the words and I think it's about a man and a woman who had this "meeting place" and for those "four weeks they trolled around" something blossomed there, but it was stronger for him than it was for her. She had no problem dashing out of the "meeting place," while he still longed for her ("She clings to his consciousness"). So the poor guy is left hurt and heartbroken (he's worried she's waiting in his dreams to drag him back to the meeting place"). That's why he says "his love had left him there, where the voice still echoes." And even though he longed for her, he's sorry he met her because now all he has is time passing since they were together ...But all he has was the words of "I'm sorry I met you." He can't tell her that 'cos she's gone Yeah, that's my theory there. Probably not even close, but I don't mind because this song is great. Read the lyrics without the music and it reads like poetry. And the throwback sound with the horns and strings is beautiful. I love it. |

| Oasis – Born On A Different Cloud Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I can't believe no one's pointed out the other lyrical rip-off... "Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working overtime" is a line from "Happiness is a Warm Gun" Liam reworks the lyrics a bit, but the "working overtime" line sounds exactly the same as The Beatles made it sound. I still love this song, though. |

| Rooney – When Did Your Heart Go Missing? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song should be dedicated to every girl who's the one with the missing heart! The girls who think it's fine to act 'tough' and put a guard up with guys. I listened to this song and just thought about those times (every time, actually) I have blown it with a guy who had potential. Just so you know, some of us behave this way because we feel some dumb need to be in charge and never want to let a guy see how attched we've probably become. Some guys don't put up with it and take off. Some write sweet little songs like this one and know that some girls just have a big mess of a life, haha. Ahh Rooney, I don't listen to your tunes a lot, but every now and then you came out with a killer catchy thing that blows my mind. I cried (and still danced) a little bit to this one. |

| Hard-Fi – move on now Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'm listening to this song right now, kind of thinking of the irony. This guy is singing about how he feels that he has to leave England and move on to somewhere better. He doesn't know where he should move on to, but there's a "red light blinking in the twilight tracing out a path right out of here and now." The song means so much to me, because I'm sitting here feeling like I also have to move on, but I want to move on to England, heh (while he's dying to get out of there). And you just sit there and think about how you want to move on, but you also get nostalgic, thinking about all your good times. It's like you start to think to yourself, "man, there's never going to be good times like these anymore," so you just keep remembering them to comfort yourself. I love this song. It's the perfect description of someone who's ready for the next part of his/her life. |

| The Kooks – Time Awaits Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I didn't know young English kids could sing, much less write something like "she tore those panties down, love me wetter." I couldn't stop laughing when I first heard that because I didn't know English boys had it in them... This song at times sounds like a Police song, the reggae-rock sound is one they practically invented and it comes through in this Kooks song. I also love how it fades out and comes back...twice. |

| The Stills – Changes Are No Good Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"But like a walkman falls to pieces, all parts no heart." I love that line. If I said it, I'd sound completely stupid, but it just sounds right coming from someone who makes music. He's a complex person, but right now he's got nothing and feels nothing. I don't know why he says "see me change, changes are no good," because he is singing about how he's stuck in a rut...doesn't he want to get out of his low point? I love this song. Tim's voice is so perfect. |

| The Stills – Helicopters Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
When I saw them live, Dave said that the idea for this song came from Tim being some sort of boy scout leader on some sort of wilderness field trip. Pretty sure he was full of it 'cos he seemed like the kind who likes to joke around, but ever since he said that, I've believed him. And it's easy to get that outdoor imagery when listening to this song, so maybe he wasn't kidding after all. |

| The Killers – Shadowplay (Joy Division cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I saw them play this live and I looked over to my friend and said "Man, this new song is fucking amazing!" Then I went home and saw that it was 'Shadowplay' by Joy Division, a band whose music I listen to often. What I'm trying to say (other than feeling really stupid for not catching that) is that it sounds nothing like the original..they really twisted it, and got rid of the darkness of the original. And the fact that Brandon Flowers doesn't try to re-do Ian Curtis's voice makes all the difference. They just made it sound like a Killers song, not a Joy Division cover. Good on The Killers for this version. It's going to be on the soundtrack to "Closer," the movie about Ian Curtis. |

For dudes who hadn't been playing guitar for that long, they really shred on this song. Is it known who's playing the solo in this song? |

Julian's ode to the place where he and his wife had their honeymoon. That's what I've always thought this song was about. |

| The Strokes – Trying Your Luck Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
When I first started listening to this band, I had no clue what this song was about. I mean, I never understood it. Then I got to college, and it all became clear to me when all of a sudden I found myself relating to the story in the song. And ever since then I've thought this song to be about a someone who could've done a better job at a relationship and just went about it the wrong way and his mistakes have frustrated him, but he's all right in the end. I also think the song switches back and forth between two people, with Julian telling someone "no harm, he's armed setting off all your alarms." It's never gonna be It's sad, but I agree The signals don't seem right It lasts for just one night, and then I'm sorry that I said That we were just good friends That lyric just says it all. He kind of just put this girl's feelings to the side because he wanted to come off as distant. I love that everyone tries to analyze Strokes lyrics. They're my favorite band and I've listened to their songs for years and years and have developed my own little theories about what the songs mean. Cool to see that other people have been doing the same. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Everyone who listens to Arctic Monkey should listen to this song. I know a few people who listen to this band and think they're Hipster McHip for listening to them. One guy actually wanted to build himself up and said, "I introduced this band to you," as if Arctic Monkeys were hidden under some rock or something. I don't think he's heard this song, 'cos he obviously thinks he's Christopher Colombus. Truth is, no one's Christopher Colombus, dammit. I know it's cliche, but it really should be about the music. If you just listened to this band for the first time four days ago in some little American town, or four years ago in Sheffield, who cares? Do you really like the music, the message and the meaning? Funny thing is, this song is so true, because all the fuss that he did say lingered around in everyone's head and got people thinking about what kind of music enjoyers they truly are. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Put Your Dukes Up John (Little Flames cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I know this isn't an Arctic Monkeys original, but they should play this live more often...it's a song that's got that kind of anthemic feel to it. I can see the crowd go absolutely insane to this song. I think it was made to be a little hard rocker just for rocking out purposes, that's why it's kind of repetitive. | |
| Coldplay – One I Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Does anyone know what he says in the live 2003 version of this song? Right before the break he sings something, but I've no clue what he's saying. I know in the end he's saying something like "Sing it to me oooohh..." but before that. Anyone know? | |
| Arctic Monkeys – Balaclava Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's like a ski-mask type of thing. It covers your whole face, except your eyes. In movies they always show bank robbers , muggers and thiefs wearing them. And I never thought this song could be about unprotected sex, but big tyme's explanation is awesome, LOL. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Do Me a Favour Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I agree with the person above- this song is very visual, and I always picture the story in my head when I listen to it. I also always picture it in black and white- does anyone else get this from this song? hahaha. I agree that it's a song about cheating, but I also think the guy who cheated ended up falling for his lover, and he now has to tell his significant other that he's cheated on her and fallen for the other girl. I don't know, I got that because he says, "and the eyes were all red, you could see that we'd cried." I mean, he was crying 'cos it was hurting him to tell her that he had found someone else. If he had just been with someone else for one night because he was itching for a woman, then he would've been begging for forgiveness, telling his girlfriend it meant nothing, not crying along with her. And he doesn't get mad at her (and he really has no right to be mad at her either, cheating scum!), he tries "forcing a smile" as she leaves. And then he says "do me a favor and ask if you need some help," as if she needed help moving on from him, since apparently he had already moved on from her. She's kind of offended and says, "stop flattering yourself." The fact that he's found someone else while being with his girlfriend does make him feel bad though, and he says that to tell him to fuck off would be too nice of a reply. He knows he's a jerk. My interpretation is probably a little too deep, but a few lyrics here and there lead me to that conclusion. And if this song is about one of the guys in the band, I could see it being true, because when there's a distance in a relationship, guys tend to get curious and stray a lot. Lots of the songs this time around are personal...Like I'm reading Alex Turner's journal entries turned into songs or something. Weird. |

| Interpol – Leif Erikson Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Where do I start with this song? It's the Perfect Song- notice how that was a random act of capitalization. It's that good. I first heard this song and started crying like a baby, and repeated the act for weeks. I was convinced this song was about me! Coming to this site, I've read all the interpretations, but to me this song is about one thing: It's about a scared person. A person who is afraid of giving herself to love. And then she finds this other person who wants all of her, no matter how "flawed" she thinks she is. But this woman keeps her distance, and the other person keeps trying to get closer, knowing she is scared. "If you don't bring up those lonely parts, this could be a good time," he says to her. He's telling her to stop being scared of getting close, because if she just let her guard down and stopped worrying about what people think about her, she'd realize that getting close to someone is not such a bad thing. "We'll collect those lonely parts and set them down." His way of telling her he wants to be with her, and that he'll take care of her. I always say that the man who brings this song to me is the man I will marry, hahahaha. Whoever brings me this song gets it. I love how Interpol is one of those bands that have lyrics everyone wants to analyze. Paul Banks writes stuff that is just insane, it gets you really good. I saw them play this live two years ago, and I went to another world; it was beautiful |

| The Verve – Weeping Willow Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. And I have no clue what it truly about. I always thought it was about someone trying to find some sort of inner peace, but that's probably not true. It's a song that I always say would go perfect with a quiet, rainy day. The song is also unbelievably English, the sound, the words, the voice. It's all dripping in English imagery, at least for me it is. I sometimes feel wrong for listening to it while walking around the bay in sunny Florida. I always say that it's the first song I'm going to listen to when I go to England. Great song, beautiful words. It's poetic. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Teddy Picker Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I could almost hug Alex Turner and give him a high five for his odd little name drops and such. I don't want your prayer Save it for the morning after That's an obvious nod to a Duran Duran song called "Save A Prayer," that has the lyrics "don't say a prayer for me now, save it for the morning after." Dude even sings the line just like the Duran Duran song, hahahaha. That's why it was so easy to catch. So that's the second shout out to Duran Duran, is he a fan or something? I love Duran Duran, and caught that right away- I was like "huh?" It's very cool; I know he shouts out to "Rio" in "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor." Clever little man, that Alex Turner. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Old Yellow Bricks Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think "D is for Dangerous" is about Andy, but damnit- this one could very well be about him too! In both songs the lyrics are calling someone out for not wanting to let go of the past. In this song someone wants to "sleep in the city that never wakes up" (probably referring to the town where they grew up) and that he's "blinded by nostalgia." Probably means that he can't ever enjoy anything new, because he's always thinking about the old days, or always comparing the new experiences to the old, familiar ones. In "D is for Dangerous" the lyrics are more sarcastic. It says that this guy was "desperately trying to simulate what it was that was all right three quarters of an hour ago." That sounds to me like an exaggerated/sarcastic way of saying that this dude keeps trying to hang on to the past way too much. Who's the "she" they're referring to in this song? It kind of throws me off. Shit- I love this song. It's probably my favorite one right now. I can't stop playing it, and singing along to it is so much fun. The lyrics are not the most cheerful, but this has to be the first Arctic Monkeys song that makes me shake my ass- more than "Dancing Shoes," even. I love the drums, and the guitars here. |

| Arctic Monkeys – Da Frame 2R Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Catchy tune. As soon as I heard the lyrics I wanted to know who the hell this song is about. Some douchebaggy playboy who thinks he's God's gift to women. You lot think it could be connected to "Brianstorm" perhaps? I love "It's a war you can't win, and the first and the last are two thinks you'll never be my darling." It's like maybe he's warning someone about this ladies man. The tune itself screams "Inspector Gadget," though- I know I'm not the only one who thinks that! |

| Coldplay – Square One Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Definitely one of my top five favorites from Coldplay. I didn't think one from X&Y would get me, but this one did. I am obsessed with how this song makes me feel. It's a bittersweet tune, because it's the sound of a super band, a band that knows they are amazing. It's not subtle like the other songs from the other albums; it's very in your face. This song makes me feel like the world exploding, turning into a bunch of shimmering stars flying in outerspace with humans on it. "From the top of the first page, to the end of the last day." It manages to take me to a whole other planet where I experience a whole other set of emotions. The words are hopeful, the sound is forceful. Pefect song. Two years later and I'm still blasting 'X&Y' as if I bought it yesterday. |

| Coldplay – X&Y Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Right when X&Y came out, I immediately fell in love with this song. That "I dive in at the deep end" guitar- I want to marry it. But I also remember getting the theme of this album pretty much from day one. It's Chris Martin's ode to his wife, pretty much. If you listen closely it's kind of a nice record of the evolution of their relationship, from meeting, courting each other and eventually falling in love. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall Chris's wife saying she met him at around the time her father was ill, and he was a good friend to her, helping her mourn and all of that. This song kind of talks about that in the beginning, with Chris trying to "repair it" anyway he can, "it" being her sadness. I've always just thought that the part about "I dive in at the deep end, you become my best friend. I want to love you, but I don't know if I can," was maybe Chris telling himself that falling in love with a friend who was going through personal problems wasn't the right thing to do, but he was legitimately falling for this woman and it was kind of confusing him. I don't know if that part is true though, that I've just always made up in my head ;) On the other hand, this could just be about two random people. I heard Chris say that X&Y was the perfect name because those two letters are variables- they can be anything, they can mean anything. This song describes the process of falling love, and the feeling love can give you. It's one of Coldplay's best, every single part of it rules. |
