Boy & Bear – Mexican Mavis Lyrics 15 years ago
I absolutely love Boy & Bear. A lot of people have been commenting that they sound like a fusion of Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons, but I also love both of those bands? So I see no issue :) One of my fave bands and I really thought they were already big, but they were given such a shit stage you could barely hear them. Poor guys. Their music is amazing, and sooner or later, everyone is going to know about them :)

Sufjan Stevens – Impossible Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
Does anyone else feel like Sufjan has changed a lot in this album? I guess to be honest, I usually play repeats of my personal favourites on my ipod like gacy, chicago, the upper peninsula, holland, no man's land, to be alone with you etc. So I'm a shitty fan and don't listen to the other's regularly.

But, his voice and style in those songs, and even the subject matter is different. I feel like his past songs were amazing and this album might take a few listens to get used to, but I still enjoy it.

I guess even though I feel like there's a quality of his olds songs that are missing from these, I feel like he makes up for it in something else. This something else is experimentation, I like the hints of noise pop, I like the backing vocals, and I love that his songs are relateable.

Btw, I don't think Sufjan is gay. I thought to be alone with you was about being with a married man, I learnt my lesson. I don't it's sung just from his perspective, I think he means that "she's" saying that they can do so much together. But hey, I could be wrong. Like someone previously said, you cannot just decide on someone's sexuality based on interpreting a couple of lines.

Tbh I thought his past songs were in a sense, innocent they were absolutely beautiful and definitely mature. But this feels like Sufjan is actually expressing life experience and he's in a different place in his life, he's older. It's easy to tell just from "Oh, woman, tell me what you want
And I'll calm down without bleeding out, with a broken heart that you stabbed for an hour". That's just completely different from his older songs. But his music still retains the quality of story-telling, of real experience and emotion. I also feel like even though Christ is probably mentioned, he's not the focus anymore.

Although, honestly. I think this has a Gotye-esque quality. I still think it's Sufjan, especially at the beginnin, but it reminds of Gotye! I enjoy listening to it a lot though.

Mark Ronson – Somebody to Love Me Lyrics 15 years ago
I tried to decipher the lyrics when I first heard it and this is pretty much exactly what I got, except I thought it was "We are wicked men, looking for buckles to loosen".
I think it's about someone leaving you because you've fucked up your life, and you're thinking that this person is going to make everything better when in reality, all you need is someone to be nice and love you and accept that no one can fix your life.

Lykke Li – Dance, Dance, Dance Lyrics 15 years ago
For me, this is definitely just about the feeling dancing gives you. I guess I think lots of people feel kind of free and can express themselves so easily in dance rather than in words. It can be therapeutic when you're upset as fuck to dance. Also absolutely understand how you can be shy and yet dancing has the illusion that you are confident. Who you are when you dance, might not be the same person.

Broken Social Scene – World Sick Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not really sure what the rest of the song is about, but I feel like the chorus is about everytime you face up to world and it's issues, you feel so overwhelmed by the sheer, well idiocy of the world, so when he sings 'my love is for my man'-I'm not sure if its meant 'I love my man, deal with it' or 'I'm sick of the world so I'm going to concentrate on my love for my man'-or just a clear expression. 'My love is for my man'-no hidden meaning/or interpretation.

Second verse;
I'm sick of the self loved loser who blessed me
(Maybe an attempt to criticize baptism?)
the exit that rules the ruling of what will be
(No idea)
and all the destroyers who never wore dresses
(Never wore dresses, I think is a reference to gender as in, they would never dare to be anything but the epitome of masculinity)
they live for the older while I confess this
(Live for the older, as in live for the past, live for conservative tradition/politics, and by confession I think when the chorus is repeated after this, it means 'world sick'-as in I'm tired of the world's conservative opinions, 'my love is for my man'-deal with it...)

I attempted the first verse as well, but I think it's almost impossible to analyse :(

we got a mine field of cripple affection
(I think in this sense, it doesn't mean 'cripple' as in actually a cripple but rather 'worthless affection')
all for the borrowed mirror connection
(We have worthless affection for those we think are like us, 'mirror connection')
that why im leavin the spoken detention
(By 'spoken detention' I think it means, having to live in silence)
and I romanced some dicks so that I could confess that
(Romanced some dicks, I think that might mean..

Washington – Someone Else in Mind Lyrics 15 years ago
Hey guys not sure if these are the right lyrics but I just tried to figure them out cause I am impatient and was too lazy to wait for someone to post them, please let me know if you have any corrections, I am especially unsure on the 'I am your own religion' line. Just message me as I don't think I get notified if you post the corrections here.

Btw, I absolutely fucking love Washington. I can't wait to see her at Splendour! She has a splendid voice, and usually I can't listen to songs that are this pace, but for Washington, I can most certainly make an exception. I think this song is really about wanting to be with someone, I'm not sure in a friendship or relationship way, and that you have all this spare time to spend time with this said person but they have someone else in mind. And you are struggling to believe that they do actually want to spend time with someone else (I can't believe it's true) so you decide instead of pushing it, you're going to just leave it up to them! I bet this person is musically gifted (Haha I made this up from the staring at your fingers part) and I guess you are really obsessed with them (You are my fall). In the end you still want to be chosen, obviously (I want to be the better man by far).

Love to see other interpretations :)

Maria Mena – Just a Little Bit Lyrics 15 years ago
I think everyone thinks this song about them, and I guess that's because it's so easy to relate to.

"Just a little bit stronger
Just a little bit wiser
Uust a little less needy
And maybe I'd get there

Just a little bit pretty
Just a little more aware
Just a little bit thinner
And maybe I'd get there"

What girl doesn't feel weak and stupid sometimes (stronger/wiser), or cling onto others too much (less needy), or that every other girl is prettier than them (bit pretty), more aware (feeling lost in their surroundings and not being clear in what they're doing in the daily lives, or maybe even being more aware in terms of being reflexive in different situations), skinnier (God, how often I think it)...and we think if we somehow achieve in all things, we will succeed (maybe I'd get there).

clearly, clearly I remember
Hiking up my skirt
And asking for your time

I think this about feeling insecure and not feeling like you have enough self worth for a guy to appreciate you on your own merits, so you hike up your skirt and attempt to use that kind of persuasion to get a guy's attention.

Clearly, clearly I remember
Nervous if ever confronted
And questioning myself

I think this is about that insecure nervous reaction you get when someone confronts you and all of a sudden you think whether you really are worth nothing.

Oh perhaps, perhaps if I got better
Perhaps if I challenged myself
Perhaps if I was...

I think this is like, maybe if I had just made myself better through challenging myself, maybe I'd be a better person.

Haha I was about to listen to Yves Klein Blue on youtube and this song popped up on the radio, which is forcing me to comment due to do the coincidence. I quite like it. I think it's about someone who's putting everything into faith/destiny as an excuse and your trying to make things work.

Brett Dennen – Can't Slow Down Lyrics 16 years ago
There's always a purity and honesty about Brett Dennen's music, but when I heard this one, I feel it's a bit different.

I think it's about being with a woman that you don't want to stick with for the rest of your life.

"I'll kiss you once
Baby, I'll kiss you twice
But I can't kiss you for the rest of your life
'Cause I'm not fit to be the man that makes you a wife
Baby, baby, it's just my foolish pride"

At first I thought he thought he didn't deserve to be 'her' husband, but I think because of the previous lyrics...

"She don't bother to remember my name
We don't talk of such things"

...he actually doesn't want to be with her because of his own pride.

I think these lyrics are just he doesn't want to settle down into a typical lifestyle for her.

"I do what any man can to survive
Work a day or maybe even night
But I can't work inside for some nine to five
Honey not in this life"

And the rest is just him and his life on the road.

Black Kids – I'm Making Eyes at You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is really being into a very attractive slag, I think the first verse shows uncertainty about it all.

"So you want my affection
We both know you'll only throw it away
But if you must have a go, fine, okay
If you must have a go, then go away"
-So you want my affection to make yourself feel better, it's not like you would actually appreciate it but fine whatever I'll give it to you, nevermind just go away I don't really want this.

"I'm making eyes at you
I've been making these eyes now, making these eyes since '82
I've been making them green and grey and brown and delta blues
I'm reciting a mantra but I can't tell you cos you're missing to me
That's all you'll ever be"
-Making eyes, I think we all know what that means, reciting a mantra possibly repeating to himself how much he wants her but he can't tell her because she's not his (cos you're missing to me), and she never will be (that's all you'll ever be)

You are missing to me
And I am missing much
Your sleepy panda eyes, those dangerous thighs, your dirty touch
You are the wildest one
But you're the one that I want
I'm making eyes at you
That's all I ever do
-I don't have you, and I know I'm missing out, panda eyes as in when eyeliner smudges, wildest one as in she sleeps around and is carefree but he still wants her, but all he does is make eyes at her.

"Oh please don't, please don't speak
You'll kill the mystique
Oh baby let's not, let's not dance
We'll ruin our chances
Oh, in between the drinks
I can't help but think that
Even as we speak
We kill the mystique"
-Don't speak because it'll make it obvious I don't have you and if they talk, it ruins the fake relationship like atmosphere of casual sex.

Black Kids – I Wanna Be Your Limousine Lyrics 16 years ago
Honestly I cannot decipher the first verse, but I think this song is rather sexy.

I heard that one of the member's sister's is a lesbian so I think is written through her perspective. I think that's portrayed in these lines.

"These pretty boys all call you "poison"
But we never let those boys in"

And this I believe means, let's go do it. :) More specifically, 'I want you to ride me, do you know what I mean? Let's get out of here'

"I wanna be your limousine
Are you diggin' what I mean?
I wanna be your limousine
Sick and sick, let's split the scene"

Not sure though. Love to see

Angus and Julia Stone – Hollywood Lyrics 17 years ago
To be quite honest, I didn't really like the sound of this song the first time I heard it, but somehow loved it the second time.I think maybe because I heard the lyrics properly and it really connected to me. Despite this I partially disagree, I think by showing an idealised version of the world to young kids, adults are trying to protect them and let them enjoy the innocence, naivety and the carefree nature of childhood. (Which people will certainly argue, that with growing technology kids can't really be protected.) That being said, I don't really think we want our young ones to know about the real world just yet. The lyrics show the harsh reality of the world, I mean really, how many servants really get to change their life around? People are liars whether we'd like to admit it or not and although I'm not sure if the Prince would've married a whore but I believe he would've married royalty (And does anyone find it a bit disturbing that Ariel was 16?- I still love that movie though.)
But even as a grown adult (Well 18, legally I'm an adult) I think I click with the duo's opinion of clinging onto the notion of a "happy ending"...
Unfortunately, I don't think everyone will get that oppportunity.

Kimya Dawson – So Nice So Smart Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay, I think I've really interpreted this quite differently.
To me it sounds like she dated a really great friend who then broken her heart who thinks that she should

"Shut up and quit your crying, Give it time and you'll be fine.."

And I think the chorus is a sarcastic imitation of how her friend/ex treated her.

"You're so nice and you're so smart
You're such a good friend, I have to break your heart
Tell you that I love you then I'll tear your world apart
Just pretend I didn't tear your world apart"

To summarize bluntly, I think it's about an ex who thinks you should just "get over it and pretend it didn't happen"

Brett Dennen – There is So Much More Lyrics 17 years ago
This is absolutely beautiful.
I think the tree metaphor means he'd rather be up a tree because you can always climb down even if you are afraid but if you are tied to a tree, there's no way out.
For example I think in western liberal society we have all these problems we think are overwhelming but we still have the power as individuals to overcome them. Yet say in a different country, you feel like you have a complete lack of control over your own life.

Azure Ray – Beautiful Things Can Come from the Dark Lyrics 18 years ago
I haven't looked deep into these lyrics and interpretated it into a 'couple type' relationship. I actually think it's about a child whose had a hard life but his heart is still pure. And I think possibly the 'rotten mouth' may refer to how kids talk crudely? Yet I think the title refers to the fact that such a beautiful soul can come from such dark places (negative, possibly abusive environment)...Maybe the new clean floor may refer to a new house/new life. Just a theory.

Ben Lee – American Television Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is just a run through of the history of American Television and its influence on its audience. There are mentions of dates and genres like the past trend of reality tele. I think the emotions and mindsets like 'I got nothing to say, got something to prove' are a direct influence from what television is showing us to feel and think. I'm thinking maybe the last para is that we've stopped second thinking or fearing of becoming what's on television and we sit mindlessly watching sex with no idea of who we ought to be. That was a bit of jumble of words.

Margot & the Nuclear So and So's – Skeleton Key Lyrics 18 years ago
I hope I'm not repeating anyone elses theory but I probably am. IMHO it's about both the people in the relationship being unfaithful. It starts off with him thinking she's ordinary and easy and would be with any man hence she's a skeleton key, because she can fit with anyone. But then he's disloyal to her because of this which he expresses through lines such as "i did a sick, sick thing to my love, my lack of loyalty, it swallowed her up"...but he also admits that he didn't really care about her "your nothing special, you're a skeleton key"...but he also mentions she doesn't care about him..."Don't claim you love me, Cause you know that ain't true"...
I just think it's a song about a relationship where either of them don't care about each other that deeply.
The line that really hits me is, "And she got me high, And I hardly noticed there were tears in her eyes"...
She made him feel somewhat joyful and he didn't realise that it was hurting her...
I think this song can be interpreted in so many ways but it doesn't seem to be about murder to myself. Each to their own though.

India.Arie – I Am Not My Hair Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with everyone else's POV but this song's also about her struggle with breast cancer. I mean if hair is seen as a symbol of beauty-those without hair shouldn't make them ugly. The song speaks for itself. I am not my hair. I am the soul that lives within.
It's not about the superficial.

Don’t come back till you end the mission
If it takes a long time
Don’t lose the vision
If you’re stuck
Check the blueprint
Look within
Reflection
Got to find the rhythm
Won’t you please return child"
I think they're sung with just so must emotion and have a distinct catchiness. But anyway I think this is definetely about religion and God.

Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't have a well thought out explanation of this song. I must admit, I'm not a huge fan of Death Cab for Cutie. I only like about 3 or 4 songs-and the others I just can't connect to. I like this song a lot though, I feel like I'm sort of connecting. My idea (which runs along the relationship problems as everyone else has already said) is that he's trying to show her how much he loves her and would wish that she would just see it instead of focusing on all the negatives. He admits that sometimes he sort of doesn't share whats going on his own mind. But then those last four repeated lines (which I agree, are just beautiful) are saying that if she keeps debating the pros and cons of their relationship-her love will disappear.

Brett Dennen – I will be the one who loves you the most Lyrics 18 years ago
Romantic.
I think it's about loving some one but still waiting for them to love themselves.
Like being with some one who's insecure.
And this insecure makes a big deal about all these things happening to her (as julysun puts it 'shallow, fake, worldy things)...and she just doesn't feel that fantastic because she's 'not invited to play host' and the 'debutants have deserted' her. And he's trying to say he's still there.
I agree with Ize that she doesn't notice because of the 'you want someone who truly loves you'.. She can want it, but she probably can't recognise it because she doesn't love herself.

The first 40ish seconds are incredibly annoying but then it gets really really good. Hate the first 40 seconds, LOVE the rest
"And I want life in every word
To the extent that it's absurd".
To me, it's like shoving meaning and the complexities of life into every word and quite frankly it's a little insane. That's a little contradictory since I'm putting meaning into a couple of very short lines. Love this song.

So upbeat! I usually dislike most intro music and I wish people would just start singing-but I didn't mind listening to this song's intro music, the first couple of times. Really loving Dennen. I can't believe no one has commented. This is one of my favourite songs even though I have a few hundred. I think she's using cards as a metaphor for who she isn't. As in she's not violent and she doesn't have to follow a life dealt by some one else (possible a typical female role).

Also the lyrics, although the words are correct are missing the repeated line 'I made my mind up last that heaven just can't have you' after the second verse. Also I love this song for how it uses the most simple of everday things and compares it to loss. It makes it so much more beautiful. The sheets also remind me of how after my friend died, I saved every single text message (probably not as deep)...but now the phones broken-I refuse to get rid of it.

I don't think it's sick. I knew this guy that I knew from an old friend of mine and we grew really close for a while and even though this song was about a girl, I spent ages crying while listening to this song after I found out he died in a car crash. I don't think he played guitar and he didn't wear a black dress and I never did anything to his body but I always wanted to have him back..close to me and this is sort of what this song is about to me. Just wanting some one back so you can be together. It's just so deep.

I think that this song really is subject to interpretation as are all lyrics so there despite what birdseed has said, I don't think there's such a thing as reading into it too much nor is there anything wrong with seeing the simplicity of the song.
I see that she is sort of taking up a male role with the sweater part but at the same time the song is predominantly made up of female roles which can be seen as how she's taking care of him as a woman would. Also I see the song sort of addresses insecurity as a person...being accepted for who you are. It's a sweet but actually not that probable, I would put this song down in the beginning phases of a relationship. If you are lucky enough to relate to this song throughout the whole of your relationship then thats fantastic.
It has such a gorgeous charm with such simple lyrics that really capture the essence of being accepted.

Pocahontas used to be my favourite movie. Beautiful music, especially this song. I love the intention, that we are all human, all equal. We need to appreciate nature. But then I did some research and found out the real Pocahontas was actually kidnapped by an American, makes more sense so it was actually a sick adaptation. I can't imagine how Pocahontas's descendants feel now, knowing that their history was sabotaged and turned into a kids movie! Now this beautiful story has lost most of its appeal to me although I may never be able to hate this song. It just seems pure still.

Emilíana Torrini – Heartstopper Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song.
I don't really think it's just about heartbreak. I think it's more like when your whole life is pressing down onto you. This can be shown through
"I heard the trains are running late"
"But the lights are out
And in an hour I walked on home
In the pouring shower
Lost my keys in front of me"
Like I assume it's about a partner but I don't think it's because she's heartbroken, maybe just can't stop thinking about him. This whole messy relationship and at the same life and bad luck just can't stop popping up!
I especially love the lyrics
"And I laugh out loud
My life is a mess"
Like when everything's going wrong and you just laugh.
