In the third verse about the woman in Colorado, he speaks of a monument of SALT. This woman actually lives in Colorado, and she has this monument that holds a grain of salt to represent each person in the world. Everyday she adds one grain of salt for each person who is born into the world, and removes a grain for each person whos "souls have passed on". The message conveyed in her monument is that every single person alive today deserves recognition as a unique individual and as a defining part of the human family. how are there no comments on this beautiful song? it is about how he feels almost ashamed that he is so blessed with the way he was born. he wishes for simpler things in life because material items don't offer him anything and just remind him that he has more than many.

This song is amazing ,brett is an exellent preformer/song writer.Is songs are liek nothing i have ever herd befroe adn all have such deep meaning but with suck a light musical ton eits easy to lisent to but not too easy that ur not lisening to the words .brett knows what hes doing and i realy hope to see him make it relay big one day he deserves its . musical genius.

The first comment really summed up this entire song. Sometimes having it all idoesn't make living in this world painless, because you're still living in this world with all this pain and whatnot, and though you're shielded from it you're not ignorant to it.

The title sets out the agenda of mystery and beauty, "My soul has known a better life than this" shows the continuity of us all and the unknown, "a better life than this" condemns us all; there have been better times in the past, maybe the simplicty idea of the first comment?

I think the first lines are some of the most beautiful i've ever heard, as i do about most brett lyrics to be honest. I feel it highlights his empathy, "my heart fell on the floor" are very strong words and truly capture a sense of pain.

Moving to the 3rd verse;

"I heard about a women who lives in Colorado, She built a monoment of sorts behind the garage door Where everyday she prays for all whom are born And all whose souls have passed on"

Firstly; i think the statement that he "heard about a woman" shows that he is livnig with a faith, the idealic view of a woman he has never met, only heard of, who has such a strong faith that she prays every day for all who are born and all who ahve passed shows the strength of her faith, a monument of sorts could be suggesting that we really only appreciate what we are told to; statues made by governments, the 7 wonders of the world or stone henge when in reality we should appreciate the beauty of hope and what has meaning to us.

With regards to the "then i curse my whiteness" and his luck, i think this is brought up again with the tree, "But then I'd rather be stuck up a tree, then tied to it" brought imagery of slavery and just luck in what we are born in to; why should one person be tied to a tree, unable to escape, while another is born with a greater chance of success in life and ease? I'm not sure exactly what i'm trying to convey with my interpretation of this song, but i think we can all agree it's a thought provoking and beautiful song.

It is incredible how this song tells such a complex story. Brett is such a complete and gifted artist on so many levels. We love you Brett!

I love this song. It always gets me going whenever I hear it, it makes me think. I think it's "I got some fancy shoes to try and KICK away these blues" .. that makes more sense than giggle, I believe. Brett Dennen is such a talented and beautiful songwriter/singer ... this song has everything and more.

This is like a blues song, without the blues sound.

I think what he means by the line "but then I'd rather be stuck up in a tree than be tied to it" is that he wants to be the one responsible for the problems in his life, not someone else. I love Brett Dennen, he has a terrific sound. Joshua James is another great artist I would recommend to any fans of Dennen.
