Sounds like a group of cops combing the usual suspects in a high crime area (prostitution/drugs) with a photo of an alleged criminal. Love the music. Lyrics are too plain to know if it's any particular incident they're referring to.

Possibly, since pigeon cameras are small and unobtrusive it was used to take photographs of his sister in an unclothed state. But the pictures have to be developed somewhere... If his parents found out, his camera could be anywhere now. It's just a guess.

Tableau Vivant is a "living picture", literally dressing and posing a person or group of people for the purpose of telling a story. Roman a Clef is telling a fictional story based on a true story so that it might be embellished or to avoid libel or slander. Advertisements show strong handsome men smoking cigarettes violently and women doing whatever as long as they're beautiful, large breasted, and barely dressed. They want to tie these men/women to the products their trying to sell to make you think that by buying these things, you'll be more like these models. But an advertisement is simply a story or at worst a lie. These products have little to do with the people you see lionizing them. I know a lack you've got that you're not even aware of, and I want to sell it to you.

"Treading the boards" means to act on stage. Macbeth is often referred to as the Scottish play since it is considered bad luck to speak the name while in a theatre. Most of you probably already know this.

"Tin-can man" may be an allusion to the Wizard of Oz character "the Tin Man" who's limbs where chopped off one by one with his own axe, enchanted by the Wicked Witch of the west. Each time, the limb was replaced with one made of tin until nothing was left of him but tin. Lacking a heart, he is unable to feel anything for someone he used to love, and so begins his journey to the Emerald City in search of a heart. A "tin man" still means someone without a heart. Why NickChopper didn't mention this is beyond me since he obviously caught the reference as well. You can also tie a string to a tin-can man and drag it from a car, and it will bounce along the pavement as if it had a life of its own.

Oh and one more thing. She's not taking off her shoes to show her feet -- though she may comment that they're ugly as she does. She's removing them because she's entered her pristine home which she is showing off to her friends that enter behind her.

I like OpinionHead's comments. But I think perhaps not so much about when she's not around, since her apartment is where her friends all meet. I think she defines herself by the items she's collected. She's showing who she believes herself to be "illuminating/simulating the obvious" through the esthetics of the decorations around her. Cups and saucers sit unused in cabinets for show, books she may never have read arranged expertly to show she's literate. While others live in their homes, hers is a museum to her own conceit, which is obvious every time she unlocks the door to enter.

An old friend calls from out of the blue in the middle of the night to explain he's dying of cancer (an assumption based on the smoking of the joint -- to increase appetite -- and the possibility of vomiting due to chemotherapy). The rest of the night is spent talking about the past, perhaps about how the friend always wanted to do something remarkable, something beautiful, but will never have the chance. But the response is that the beautiful thing might be in surviving rather than giving up.
