Apartment Song Lyrics
Illuminate the obvious
it's standing right here in
front of us
what our apartment does
when we're not around
does not concern us
Simulate the obvious
and it's standing, standing
right here in front of us
just what our apartment does
when we're not around
does not concern us
She's the horrible esthete
and she hates her ugly feet
at a place where her friends
all meet
she takes her shoes off and
invites everyone to see
Eliminate the obvious
and it's right here, right here
in front of us
just what our apartment does
when we're not around
does not concern us
She's the horrible esthete
at the place where her friends all meet
while her clock reinforces its conceit
and her mirror checks out
other things
the walls stand a little more
at ease
and her books they chat so
expertly
and her cups and saucers get
some sleep
and things get all together neat
and at the clicking of the key
returns the horrible esthete
it's standing right here in
front of us
what our apartment does
when we're not around
does not concern us
and it's standing, standing
right here in front of us
just what our apartment does
when we're not around
does not concern us
and she hates her ugly feet
at a place where her friends
all meet
she takes her shoes off and
invites everyone to see
and it's right here, right here
in front of us
just what our apartment does
when we're not around
does not concern us
at the place where her friends all meet
while her clock reinforces its conceit
and her mirror checks out
other things
the walls stand a little more
at ease
and her books they chat so
expertly
and her cups and saucers get
some sleep
and things get all together neat
and at the clicking of the key
returns the horrible esthete

I like OpinionHead's comments. But I think perhaps not so much about when she's not around, since her apartment is where her friends all meet. I think she defines herself by the items she's collected. She's showing who she believes herself to be "illuminating/simulating the obvious" through the esthetics of the decorations around her. Cups and saucers sit unused in cabinets for show, books she may never have read arranged expertly to show she's literate. While others live in their homes, hers is a museum to her own conceit, which is obvious every time she unlocks the door to enter.
Oh and one more thing. She's not taking off her shoes to show her feet -- though she may comment that they're ugly as she does. She's removing them because she's entered her pristine home which she is showing off to her friends that enter behind her.
Is this song describe what's going on when a woman is away from her apartment? She seems to be this soul who cannot stand herself and all the objects in the apartment seem to speak about her behind her back. Such deep lyrics and it's even hard to gauge a cosmetic reason.
I was at a party in the summer once, and these girls were all showing off their pretty feet in their new sandals, and this one girl goes "Oh, I can't wear sandals." the others asked why, and she takes off her shoes and showed them her webbed toes! Really. I was in love. Where are you now, Christine?
Goodness, I have no idea what that has to do with the song, but I love your comment!

Hahaha I love your comment. Doesn't necessarily enlighten me regarding the song, but now I'd like to meet Christine of the web toes.
