An old friend calls from out of the blue in the middle of the night to explain he's dying of cancer (an assumption based on the smoking of the joint -- to increase appetite -- and the possibility of vomiting due to chemotherapy). The rest of the night is spent talking about the past, perhaps about how the friend always wanted to do something remarkable, something beautiful, but will never have the chance. But the response is that the beautiful thing might be in surviving rather than giving up.
First of all, I believe the second refrain is 'artifully like the Greeks'.
I personally think that this song is just about purpose in life. I get the sense from this song that it's like everyone was put here on life to do one beautiful thing- and wouldn't it be great if everyone's one beautiful thing outlived them?
