I love that middle section everyone's mentioned, "this is me on top of you, etc.", and one thing that always blows my mind about this song is that you figure that section has to be the climax, and then it goes into a whole other part, like there's still 2.5 mins left to the song!! Whoa. |

I've heard it speculated this song, or at least the people in the first lines, are gypsies or Irish travellers. Definitely a cousin song to Common People. And yeah, it f---ing rocks, I love the snare. |

Marlowe I wondered the same about the first line, like he's wondering whether his next big love is just around the corner...but mainly I thought it was just a literary device.
And I agree that this is a straight-up sincere love song, perhaps the only one in Pulp's catalogue not laced with bitterness or irony. |

"huge gloat," es. Jarvis seems to love playing a sort of Nick Carraway role of narrating the stories of women-in-decline, people who he clearly fancied at least at one point, but now he's reveling in and perhaps fetishizing their downfall.
I listen to this song to bring me down a notch whenever I fear I'm getting a little too big for my britches, overconfident or a bit reckless or whatever. |

haha re: nutcase ex... this song does remind me of those people (er, sometimes yours truly) who are torn between wanting a relationship and wanting the chase... someone who either can't commit but still wants love, or who sort of commits but then creates drama to keep things interesting. |

Sad indeed. I especially find touching the implication that while once upon a time he was obsessed with her and had childish fantasies about marrying her, etc., in adulthood he's mellowed and is so nostalgic, and perhaps his life is so empty now, that it would blow his mind just to see her for an hour over tea. |

I'd also add that this is about his regret specifically about having left the child behind or whatever. "I have run away from the one thing that I ever made..." He thinks he's too seedy or whatever to be of value as a father, yet also realizes he might be in a unique position to help the child avoid his own fate. |
