Razzmatazz Lyrics

The trouble with your brother
He's always sleeping with your mother
And I know that your sister missed her time again this month
Am I talking too fast?
Or are you just playing dumb
If you want I can write it down
Shouldn't matter to you
'Cos aren't you the one with your razzmatazz and your nights on the town

Oh-oh-oh

Oh you knew it, and you blew it, didn't you babe?
I was lying when I asked you to stay
And now no one's gonna care if you don't call them when you said
And he's not coming 'round tonight to try to talk you into bed
And all those stupid little things, they ain't working
No they ain't working at all

Start getting fatter three weeks after I left you
Now you're going with some kid who looks like some bad comedian
Now are you gonna go out?
Are you sitting at home, eating boxes of milktray?
Watch TV on your own, aren't you the one
With your razzmatazz and your nights on the town

Oh-oh-oh

And your father wants to help you, doesn't he babe?
But your mother wants to put you away
And now no one's gonna care if you don't call them when you said
And he's not coming 'round tonight to try to talk you into bed
And all those stupid little things, they ain't working
No they ain't working at all

Oh well I saw you at the doctors waiting for a test
You're trying to look like some kind of heiress
But your face is such a mess
And now you're going to a party and you're leaving on your own
Oh I'm sorry but didn't you say that things go better with a little bit of razzmatazz?

Na na nana na na

And now no one's gonna care if you don't call them when you said
And he's not coming 'round tonight to try to talk you into bed
And now it's half past ten in the evening
And you wish that you were dead
'Cause all those stupid little things
They ain't working, oh they ain't working at all

We slept together and you didn't call me when you said you would and you cheated on me. So then I left you and your whole life started falling apart. No one wants you now, and you brought all this on yourself, and to be honest i'm pretty glad about it.

Anyone considered that she could now be pregnant? Started getting fatter... Sitting at home eating boxes of milk tray- cravings No-one wants to know her anymore because of it And her mum's pissed off but her dad's trying to help her. Maybe, love the song though x

To add to the pregnant theory:

'Oh well I saw you at the doctors waiting for a test you tried to look like some kind of heiress but your face is such a mess'

My interpretation of this is that his girlfriend cheated on him and got pregnant with another man and now she's left to bring the child up on her own. The narrator is revelling in her misfortune and thinks its punishment for her cheating.

I think this is an extremely bitter song. The above comments are all right but miss the point that he's angry with her for not beign the girl he wanted. He acts up to be all riteous and a bigger man (probably as a defense mechanism) but really, he's pissed off. Lines like...

You started getting fatter three weeks after I left you

and

And now you're going to a party and you're leaving on your own

Jarvis is the king of witty and scathing comments.

"Am I talking too fast? Or are you just playing dumb If you want I can write it down"

Brilliant.

To me its ripping into some chick, fictitious or not. Love the tune though, one of my faves.

"huge gloat," es. Jarvis seems to love playing a sort of Nick Carraway role of narrating the stories of women-in-decline, people who he clearly fancied at least at one point, but now he's reveling in and perhaps fetishizing their downfall.

I listen to this song to bring me down a notch whenever I fear I'm getting a little too big for my britches, overconfident or a bit reckless or whatever.

Agreed 100% with jpchenet and I would like to add that since he is pissed off by this person who he left (he feels scorned since she moved on) maybe deep inside he still loves them.

The line:

Now you're going with some kid who looks like some bad comedian

Typical guy who expects the girl to wait around for him to come back to her. Of course when she doesn't he starts pointing out all her faults and rubbing it in her face that he left her and she became a wreck because of this.

Loved her but wanted to be with others perhaps, loved her but not enough to just be with her. She then TRIES to move on to another guy and this really hurt him inside and thus he is putting on this facade of being cool and whatever to her... Like he doesn't want to appear vulnerable.

Does that make any sense? Jajaja hope so, perhaps I'm thinking too much into it.

Cocker's lyrics often singe with unrequited love and impotent rage. The whole song seems to be a vengeful rant about the pleasure he takes in seeing an ex-girlfriend's downfall because of her decadent lifestyle. There is intensely bitter and judgmental tone that runs through the entire song, which only shows us the depth of his entanglement. There also seems to be a certain self-awareness, with Cocker almost mocking this jilted lover by the extremity of his rancour.

He's skirted similar themes in songs like: Disco 2000 and Bad Cover Version.
