I Want You Lyrics

Hey,
you can look, you can look just like anyone else,
if that's what you want to do.
I could laugh, I could laugh in your face if I want,
but I'm not going to.
When we met last week on Saturday,
I couldn't make a sentence,
I couldn't even say what I meant to say.

That I want you;
it doesn't hurt to say I want you.
I need you;
I never thought I'd say I need you.
I'll keep you,
Oh yes I'll keep you and I'll throw myself away.
And I'll break you;
because I lose myself inside you.
I'll make you fit in the space that I provide you.
I'll take you,
Oh yes I'll take you just to push you far away, away, away.

Yes, yes you're all, yes you're all that I ever desired,
still I'll kill you in the end.
When, when it seems, when it seems that it's getting too soft,
when you lapse into a friend,
there's someone just behind the door,
so don't betray your feeling,
no don't talk any more.
Never dare to say

that I want you.
it doesn't hurt to say I want you.
I need you;
I never thought I'd say I need you.
I'll keep you,
Oh yes I'll keep you and I'll throw myself away, away, away.
And I'll break you;
because I lose myself inside you.
I'll make you fit in the space that I provide you.
I'll take you,
Oh yes I'll take you just to push you far away, away, away.

Now, now we come, now we come to the end of it all,
see it squirming, almost dead.
No, you can't leave it, you can't leave it to die here in pain.
You've got to stamp upon its head.
I'll go out and you stay home.
Facing up to living, living on your own
and I'll curse my pride, curse my pride, curse my stupid pride,
because

I want you.
it doesn't hurt to say I want you.
I need you;
I never thought I'd say I need you.
I'll keep you,
Oh yes I'll keep you and I'll throw myself away, away, away.
And I'll break you;
because I lose myself inside you.
I'll make you fit in the space that I provide you.
I'll take you,
Oh yes I'll take you just to push you far away, away, away.

He was in love with a fantasy; he put this woman on a pedestal as his ideal ("You're all that I ever desired"). He is inevitably disappointed, because he cannot fit her in the "space that I provide you" (the fantasy). He even begins to disdain her a bit ("I could laugh in your face if I wanted to").

He also is scared of being vulnerable & losing his identity with her ("Oh yes I'll keep you and I'll throw myself away"), so he chooses to push her away when things get too close, to protect himself ("Still I'll kill you in the end / when it seems that it's getting too soft").

He's too coward to end the relationship himself or to express his feelings ("I couldn't make a sentence"), so instead the relationship dies slowly ("see it squirming, almost dead"). Then as the relationship finally ends, he of course realizes he still needs/wants her, but is too proud to admit it now ("and I'll curse my pride").

The conflict of feeling is interesting. He wants/needs her, but is scared of the real relationship & has a fear of losing his independence/identity as well as giving up on the fantasy. He chooses the fantasy, and rejects the reality, but has bitterness with himself over his own fickleness, because deep down he still wants/needs her, & he blew it.

My Interpretation

This makes me think of my ex.

He was a bit of a nutcase.

haha re: nutcase ex... this song does remind me of those people (er, sometimes yours truly) who are torn between wanting a relationship and wanting the chase... someone who either can't commit but still wants love, or who sort of commits but then creates drama to keep things interesting.

I agree. in love with the thought of love

I hate the idea of someone like this. Like lola500 said, the types who are just in it for the chase. It turns into a game of pulling someone in and then pulling away to keep the cycle endlessly going.

It's a great song, though!
