| Plumb – Boys Don't Cry Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| To me, this song is sung from the perspective of a young boy who wants desperately to have a deeper relationship with his father, but who feels that those desires aren't reciprocated. He doesn't tell his father how he really feels because expressing his emotions is looked down upon. He keeps all of his feelings locked up inside, but he wants desperately to let them out. He just fears rejection from his father, so he doesn't... | |

To me, this song is about a boy and a girl that are close friends. They share a common bond because neither one seems to be appreciated fully by their parents. The parents don't seem to notice their talents and don't take time out of their busy day just to enjoy time with their children. The children are hurt deeply by this, and relate to one another through this. When he sings, "I'm sure that you had your reasons", I think he is singing that to his mother, whom he feels neglected him. He's afraid of expressing his emotions because he never shared them with his mother before. He knows he has to share them, though, in order to "let it go" and experience healing. He wants to put it behind him so that he doesn't continue to perpetuate the damage in the relationship with his mother. I LOVE this song... |

These are the lyrics as I hear them... This boy wants to play, there’s no time left today It’s a shame ‘cause he has to go home. This boy’s got to work, got to sweat Just to pay what he gets to get left all alone. But let’s step outside. Let’s go for a ride, just for awhile. No, we won’t get caught, well that’s what I thought until we cried I’m still here, but it hasn’t been easy I’m sure that you had your reasons I’m scared if all this emotion For years I’ve been holding it down For years I’ve been holding it down This girl tries her best everyday, but it’s all gone to waste ‘Cause there’s no one around This girl, she can draw, she can paint Likes to dance, she can skate, now she don’t make a sound. We’ll play in the park, till it’s too dark for us to see Well, we’ll make our way home, with mud on our clothes. She won’t be pleased. I’m still here, but it hasn’t been easy I’m sure that you had your reasons I’m scared if all this emotion For years I’ve been holding it down And I’d love to forgive and forget So I’ll try to put all this behind us Just know that my arms are wide open The older I get, the more that I know Well, it’s time to let this go I got to let it go, I got to let it go I got to let it go, I got to let it go I’m still here, but it hasn’t been easy I’m sure that you had your reasons I’m scared if all this emotion For years I’ve been holding it down And I’d love to forgive and forget So I’ll try to put all this behind us Just know that my arms are wide open The older I get the more that I know And I’d love to forgive and forget So I’ll try to put all this behind us Just know that my arms are wide open The older I get, the more that I know Well, it’s time to let this go. |

| A Fine Frenzy – Rangers Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Here are the actual lyrics... the paths have been crossed the crumbs are gone and the way and the way is lost melancholy phantoms eye our skins poisoned apples falling with the wind hear the sigh of the trees those who enter here never leave and the rangers stream out of their cabins they are the hunters, we are the rabbits but maybe we don’t want to be found maybe we don’t want to be found further in and on we go sightless creatures tugging at our clothes cutting through the twilight, sword in hand strangers once, united against the land at the sound of the bells they’re pulling paper lanterns from their shelves and the rangers stream out of their cabins they are the hunters, we are the rabbits and maybe we don’t want to be found maybe we don’t want you tracking us down the rangers stream out of their cabins raising their muskets, flashing their badges but maybe we don’t want to be found maybe we don’t want to be found let’s keep hiding, all quiet-like they’ll keep seeking but they won’t find us let’s keep living our quiet lives you and I you and I and the rangers stream out of their cabins they are the hunters, we are the rabbits and maybe we don’t want to be found maybe we don’t want you tracking us down the rangers stream out of their cabins raising their muskets, flashing their badges but maybe we don’t want to be found maybe we don’t want to be found |

This song is about getting together with family in December, probably near Christmas. She is with one of her parents, but has nothing to say. From the lyrics booklet, it says "plain to see, no flies on him" which to me signifies this is about her father. That line to me signifies that it is plain to see that he isn't dead or dying, but that all he talks about is his aches and pains. It seems she feels it is just a game he plays to get sympathy. Either that or, since this could be the last event they have together, that he really is in pain and dying, but that is all he talks about. Instead of enjoying their time together, they are miserable. If this is at Christmas time, it almost seems like she is looking at the tree with an angel on the top and imagining that the angel takes her away from the situation. |

Corrections: It's "Shove in" NOT "Jaweh". It's "And knowing" NOT "I'm knowing" Also, on the flies line, the lyrics booklet says that she is saying "Plain to see, no flies on him", but I definitely agree and think it sounds more like "on me". |

| Dolores O'Riordan – In the Garden Lyrics | 18 years ago |

To me, this song is about being in an abusive marriage. I don't think it is necessarily a physically abusive marriage; rather, I think it is the abuse that comes from extreme control and emotional abuse. The woman is looking out the window and watching her children play. When she watches her son, she sees his father in him. Perhaps when he plays, he seeks to control the situation by making the others always do what he wants to do. She can see right through it, and it bothers her that she sees his father in him because she thought she knew him. When she watches her daughter, she sees herself as a child. She sees an innocent girl who is free and playful. She used to be like that, but she feels like this part of her is gone from the abuse that has been going on for so long. However, it also shows the helplessness of the situation because she will keep this secret until she dies. She will continue to live in the situation instead of leaving. |

| Dolores O'Riordan – When We Were Young Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| To me, this song is definitely written to one of her parents. It is a reflection that she and her siblings didn't always appreciate the parent as a child, but that they now see everything this person did for them. Nothing makes her feel better than talking to this person on the phone, which means that she is probably living too far from "home" to go back easily. | |

The correct lyrics are as follows (from lyrics booklet): Funny how things just tasted better When we were young, when we were young Funny how things just seemed so easy When we were young It's been a long day... (Repeat x4) Chorus: I wanna get out, I wanna go home Is anything better than you on the phone? (Repeat X2) I think that we weren't always grateful For what you done, when we were young I think that we weren't always grateful We've come a long way (Repeat x4) Chorus I wanna get out, I wanna go home I wanna feel better, can't make it alone. |

| Over the Rhine – All I Need Is Everything Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I believe this song is about salvation. “Slow down. Hold still. It's not as if it's a matter of will. Someone's circling. Someone's moving a little lower than the angels. And it's got nothing to do with me. The wind blows through the trees, but if I look for it, it won't come. I tense up. My mind goes numb. There's nothing harder than learning how to receive.” In the Bible, Jesus is referred to as being “a little lower than the angels”. Sometimes, we go overboard in our search for the truth that we don’t take the time to stand still and listen… God plants the truth inside each of our hearts, and he asks that we “be still” in order to know that he is Lord. “There’s nothing harder than learning how to receive” depicts how difficult it is for us as humans to comprehend that all God wants us to do is receive the gift of grace through his son. We think we have to do something to earn it, so we don’t want to take it because we just can’t accept that it would be that “simple”. Calm down. Be still. We've got plenty of time to kill. No hand writing on the wall: just the voice that's in us all. And you're whispering to me, time to get up off my hands and knees, 'cause if I beg for it, it won't come. I find nothing but table crumbs. My hands are empty. God I've been naive. I think this verse is showing us that we are no longer in the days of Moses where God appears in a burning bush or carves the ten commandments into stone. He is the voice that lives inside us that comes in a whisper when we are quiet enough to listen. He is saying that you don’t need to be on your hands and knees begging for his grace. He doesn’t want us to eat the crumbs from the table when he has planned the entire feast for us! All I need is everything. Inside, outside, feel new skin. All I need is everything. Feel the slip and the grip of grace again. I think the line “inside, outside, feel new skin” is parallel to how Paul tells us when we accept grace, we are a new creation. We put off everything old and become a new creation to our Lord. Slow down. Hold still. It's not as if it's a matter of will. Someone's circling. Someone's moving a little lower than the angels. This voice calling me to you: it's just barely coming through. Still, I clearly hear my name. I've been fingering the flame like tomorrow's martyr. It gets harder to believe. This part shows how God calls each of us. She can barely hear it coming through, but nonetheless, she clearly hears her name being called. All I need is everything. Inside, outside, feel new skin. All I need is everything. Feel the slip and the grip of grace again. So from now till kingdom come, taste the words on the tip of my tongue. 'Cause we can't run truth out of town, only force it underground. The roots grow deeper in ways we can't conceive. This verse shows how from now until the end of times, the truth will be present. Mainstream society wants to force it underground because it isn’t “cool” to be a believer, but in many ways this only serves to fertilize our roots and help us to grow stronger in our own beliefs. |

| Over the Rhine – B.P.D. Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I forgot to add that in the end, the singer realizes that as much as she wants to stop bailing the other person out, she just can't. "Only God can save us now." | |

Edwartica, I know that OTR said that the song "She" is about an abusive relationship. That might be the one you are thinking of. To me, this song is more about that person in your life that you are always pulling out of a mess. From the line, "Is madness just a handme down" it seems like it could be someone they are related to... The person is "crazy" for always getting in a bind, just like the one singing the song is "crazy" for continually bailing the other person out. The singer is saying, "I've helped you enough and now you need to help yourself!" |

I think this song is amazing. I especially LOVE the acoustic version on the Deluxe Question CD. It left me in tears the first time I heard it. It is musical genius. I think everyone of us can relate to this at some point in our lives. I am married now, but this song took me back to the relationship I had right before I met my future husband. I was very in love with a guy, but we were also very sexually impure with one another. It was a sin we could just not overcome. After two years, he asked if we could take a break for 6 months to re-evaluate the relationship. I waited for 6 months, praying and hoping for the relationship to be returned to me. It did not. Beside a river in the cloak of darkness, the guy told me that he didn't want to be with me anymore. The tears that welled up inside my heart could have filled that river. I was heartbroken. He wanted to stay and talk more, but I just got up to walk myself home. I love the line about walking away despite untied laces, which to me symbolizes that he isn't "ready" to walk away, but he is walking away nonetheless. I also love the line "I would wait forever if you would just ask." This was just how I felt. If he had told me he needed more time after the 6 months, I would have waited... Ironically, a year later he came back to tell me that he thought he made the wrong decision, but I was already dating my future husband, so I declined the invitation. I'm not sure why I am sharing this story except to remind all of you who RELATE to this song, that you can't often see it at the time, but... When God takes something away from you, He loves you enough to give you something in the future that is EVEN BETTER. We don't always understand his plan at the time, but His plan is ALWAYS perfect. |

Here's my take on the song. I think it is about a relationship that has gone too far sexually, and the boy has asked the two to take a break to think about things for awhile. It begins with him reflecting on the relationship (looking at pictures, writing about disappointment). "Dripping where I stand From my watery hands Hoping to get past the open bedroom door Where her clothes on the floor Remind me of our conversation The feeling of slight hesitation To turn out the light" This part makes me think they have had sex with one another. Afterwards, he took a shower, which could be symbolic of trying to wash off the guilt he feels. "Fourteen days now (I'm not) Since we started (I'm not hiding) To complicate the situation (From this situation) I’m not hiding (I'm not) I’m just buying some time (I'm not hiding) For us to find the back door (From this situation)" It has been 14 days in the relationship since they began to have sex with one another, and he wants to take a break to find the metaphorical "back door" out of this situation. He doesn't seem to want the relationship to be over, but he knows the sexual impurity is wrong. At the same time, he seems to be defending this decision, when he states that he is not hiding. He wants to face the issue and overcome, but doesn't know if he can. "There’s nothing left to say (Don't believe me) To excuse the way that I behaved (When I say it's over) I still feel him Gripping like a stain (By the time you're gone) To this fabric (It's almost over) Torn at every seam Thrown away" He can't rationalize the behavior he has engaged in, and he doesn't want to even try. I think the "Him" in this section is Satan. "Why should I take all the blame for all my mistakes? (I’m without regret) You were there with every promise made to break (I will not forget) When did you become the one without regret? (I’m without regret) Kill me, burn me down, I swear I won’t forget (I will not forget) When did you become the one without regret (Kill me, kill me) Kill me, burn me down, I swear I won’t forget (Kill me, kill me)" At the end of the song, he seems to be expressing anger towards the girl for not feeling guilty. He doesn't understand how she cannot feel regretful for the choice they both made to engage in premarital sex. In the end, he seems to realize that they cannot be together anymore because they wouldn't be able to overcome this sin, especially if she doesn't feel convicted about it. |

| Emery – Left With Alibis And Lying Eyes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I agree that this song is about murder. Some people might be wondering why a Christian band would sing from the perspective of murderers. I think it takes a deeper meaning when placed in the context of Jesus's own words in the Bible. When the Pharisees are feeling self-righteous about all the ways they can keep the Law, Jesus tells them, "The law says do not murder. I say anger and enmity (i.e. hatred, ill will, unfriendly disposition) convict you of murder in God's eyes." Suddenly, the Pharisees don't look so "righteous"... and neither do we! I think this is a great scriptural reference for this song because it shows us that in light of God's perfection, we all fall short of His glory. We are all guilty of murder in God's eyes because we have all had an unfriendly disposition at times. Once again, Emery's music points us right back to our need for a Savior. Awesome song! |
