Rush – Freewill Lyrics 12 years ago
I think your post pretty much explains why the lyrics make sense. Simply put, we can't prove which of the two arguments you present is correct. I think what he's saying is "I will choose (to believe in) free will."

Rush – The Spirit Of Radio Lyrics 12 years ago
Maybe you're not aware, but Neil Peart has completely disavowed Ayn Rand. In fact, he attributed his entire belief in her writings and opinions to being young, idealistic, and totally inexperienced in the ways of real life.

Here's a direct quote for you:

"I was in my early 20s. I was a kid. Now I call myself a bleeding heart libertarian. Because I do believe in the principles of Libertarianism as an ideal — because I’m an idealist. Paul Theroux’s definition of a cynic is a disappointed idealist. So as you go through past your 20s, your idealism is going to be disappointed many many times. And so, I’ve brought my view and also — I’ve just realized this — Libertarianism as I understood it was very good and pure and we’re all going to be successful and generous to the less fortunate and it was, to me, not dark or cynical. But then I soon saw, of course, the way that it gets twisted by the flaws of humanity. And that’s when I evolve now into … a bleeding heart Libertarian." - Neil Peart - Rolling Stone June 2012

Imagine Dragons – It's Time Lyrics 12 years ago
Interesting perspective TeslaLuna, I wouldn't really interpret this song that way, but I can definitely relate to your interpretation.

All I can tell you is to be who you are, and find people who love you for that. You may find you end up with people you would never have "chosen" to be your friends, but your life will be much more rewarding when you stop trying to appease the people who you wish were your friends and develop deep, meaningful relationships with those who are more complimentary to who you really are at your core.

I don't love the song, but it's got some amazing lyrics.

Seether – Tonight Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't believe this song is about a troubled relationship. I think it's about a very damaged person in a really good relationship. Even though the relationship is strong and it's good for him, he's troubled by his demons and fighting his urge to run from a good thing.

That's what I take from this song, but maybe it's because that's where I'm at. I have an awesome relationship with an awesome girl, and the only thing holding us back is me and my damage from past relationships. Every word of this song resonates with me.

"you look at me and I was done" means one look from her and he's helpless. Totally smitten. It's kind of like "you had me at hello"...

Adele – Someone Like You Lyrics 13 years ago
I disagree... There is absolutely nothing empowering about this song. It's about devastation. It's about the realization that it WON'T ever work out, because they've moved on, and you're still madly, hopelessly in love, and the only thing you can console yourself with is "Someday I'll find someone like you".

It's about breaking down and simply not being able to prevent yourself from trying to interject yourself back into their lives in some way, simply in the hopes that they'll validate you by telling you "yeah, we had some good times", and when that doesn't happen, your only remaining response is "Nevermind, I'll find someone like you."

It's about that time when you realize they've moved on, and you choke on the words "I wish nothing but the best for you", because it's simultaneously sincere and devastating. It kills you to think that it can't work out for the two of you, but at the same time you genuinely want their relationship to succeed because you know that if it doesn't, the person you love so uncontrollably will probably hurt the same way you do, and that's the last thing you ever want for them.

Rolling in the deep is an empowering song, but this song is about the days you can barely bring yourself to get out of bed to eat. It's most definitely NOT about moving on.

30 Seconds to Mars – Closer To The Edge Lyrics 15 years ago
The second verse really makes this song for me:

"Can you imagine a time when the truth ran free
The birth of a song, the death of a dream, closer to the edge
This never ending story, paid for with pride and fate
We all fall short of glory, lost in our fate"

To just read the lyrics to this song, it seems like a song about failure, and even being angry about it.. bitter even.

However, in listening to the song, the chorus and bridge are stating quite the opposite. This song is ALL about hope. It's about falling flat on your face and getting back up to try again, about not regretting your failures, because as long as you learn from them, it's not failure.

EVERYONE fails. There are countless quotes from some of the world's most successful people about success being what happens when you don't view failure as an option.. Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, and Albert Einstein all have quotes to this effect.

That's what this song is about to me. It's TOTALLY motivational. It tells me "Go take risks, and when they blow up in your face, evaluate what went wrong, and go do it again. Don't feel sorry for yourself, don't ever apologize for trying, just get off your ass and go do it again, and do it right this time."

Go make your mark on the world, 30 seconds to mars fans.

Rascal Flatts – Bless The Broken Road Lyrics 15 years ago
I've heard this song a million times, but never really listened to it until just now.

I've been wallowing in the depression of a really sad breakup for the past few weeks, and have probably listened to "what hurts the most" 50 times in that timeframe, as well as a healthy dose of 'I'm moving on", and "These days", which are all absolute favorite songs of mine. Today I decided that since Rascal Flatts is just about the best love ballad band ever, I'd put them on Pandora.. The first song up was this one, so naturally, I jumped over to songmeanings and pulled up the lyrics to listen to it, and I decided that this song simply MUST be the theme song when I actually do find the girl who it's meant for.

Thanks for the burst of sunshine through a thick band of dark clouds Rascal Flatts.

Timbaland – Apologize Lyrics 18 years ago
to the last three posters:

This song is NOT about suicide....

the reference to "cut me down" is talking about her belittling him... look at it in context "you tell me that you need me, then you go and cut me down"

http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/cut+down+to+size

As for the rope, it's a metaphor for "just hanging on"... The relationship has been ruined, and he knows he needs to cut the rope and move on, but he's afraid of the pain of the fall.. hence the "10 feet off the ground"...

Shoe.gal87 was 100% correct about this song...

Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics 18 years ago
If this song IS actually about his dad, I just lost even more respect for greenday than I already had.

Why would anyone take a song about their father, and then make the video into something totally different, particularly an anti-military video?

What a total joke this band has become. While I mostly agree with their political views, I have a huge problem with the way they express them.

I'd be totally happy if I never heard the word "greenday" again...

I've been a fan since the beginning. I bought Kerplunk long before most people had ever heard of Greenday. I've seen greenday in concert 6 times, only to become totally disillusioned with their "we're famous, therefore we know everything" mentality.

Fuck greenday.

Diamond Rio – I Believe Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm amazed that this song only has one comment...

This song is so powerful to me... It had just come out and was getting lots of radio play... I loved the song, but it was just another song to me... Then one day I got a call out of the blue from a friend who told me to come see her in the hospital.

I went to visit her, not knowing what to expect. When I got there, I got filled in on the details... My friend Angie had been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. She was 23 years old, and was going to die of this terrible disease. On the way home, this song came on the radio, and I was so overcome by it that I had to pull over and compose myself to finish my drive home.

I'm not a terribly spiritual person, but I really think I was guided to this song, to give me some perspective and comfort to deal with the death of my friend.

Rest in Peace Angie. We still love you.

Rush – Nobody's Hero Lyrics 18 years ago
This has been one of my favorite Rush song's since it came out. It really does make you think about who real heroes are. Everytime I've ever heard it, I think about those who I know that have passed on, and it always makes me think about the heroic attributes they've had (everyone has a few). Tonight it got me thinking about my most recent hero:

A few months ago, there was a mass murder in my area (Utah, Trolley square shootings)... My ex girlfriend's father was one of the casualties, and her brother was seriously injured... They were the first two people shot in the attack... The way the story has been told to me is that as soon as the father saw the gun, he immediately turned to cover his son. His son got shot first, and he jumped on him and covered him from the shooter. He took 5 bullets in the back and the head, giving his life so that his son had a chance to live.

That, my friends, is a hero.

Hinder – Better Than Me Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great song! from my perspective, it's about a guy who mistreated his girlfriend, and only after she left, he realized how bad he screwed up. He wants her back, but realizes that he can never make up for his wrongdoings.

I've been looking for a song to describe my feelings about an ex for 4 years now. Finally found it. I screwed up big time, and I doubt if I'll ever fully get over it. Hopefully I learned and won't make those mistakes again.
