I think those both might be references to the Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat from Guys and Dolls ('I dreamed last night I was on a boat to heaven...'). That's what leapt to mind anyway |

More mysterious lyrics from A.C. Newman. Does "35 in the shade" refer to a car, maybe? Although I don't have much idea what they mean I really like these lyrics - the rhyme scheme is clever, and "all joking aside, there goes my ride" is great. |

| Simple Kid – Serotonin Lyrics

I'm afraid i got this a bit wrong, I copied it from someone else who had it mostly down but made a couple errors - it's "the engine slows" not "the angels slow" and at the end it's "happiness is nothing but the flow of serotonin, it ain't got to do with Jesus Christ..." etc
The song remains awesome. |

This is a lovely song, although I have no idea what it's going on about. I always thought he was singing "this is not my style" as well, although perhaps not.
It's "this is heads down" rather than "the is heads down" |

| The Shins – Nothing At All Lyrics

This song, being probably a cull from Wincing the Night Away, fits into the whole theme of that album - the guy becoming disillusioned with life philosophies.
It's basically pretty self-explanatory, but I've no idea about some bits - what does the salt mine mean? |

decemberistsfan, that just because you have to listen closely to find meaning in a song doesn't make the lyrics "random"... entirely the opposite, really.
"Over the ramparts you tossed
The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers
Tied to a brick
Sweet as a song"
This might've been said before (I didn't read all 85 comments) but I think the "brick sweet as a song" refers to how he loved the relationship but that it still weights him down. |

| The Shins – Mine's Not A High Horse Lyrics

Yeah, the parallel finger means he's pointing. Something accusatory, possibly.
I think the song has something of a "I told you so" superior sense to it. There's numerous references to the person the song is directed at having some strongly held conviction (maybe religious) and then losing it, and the singer then feeling smug ("will you remember my reply when your high horse dies?")
My favourite line is at the beginning of the chorus (these lyrics have it slightly wrong): "You've got them all on your side / that just makes more for doubt to slaughter", i.e. I don't care that lots of people agree with you, that just means more people to eventually be proven wrong (slaughtered by doubt). |

The video contains an old guy in army uniform in a bar drinking, so I think that part of the song probably isn't metaphorical. It's a bit disappointingly literal, the video. |

I'm absolutely convinced beyond all doubt that the line "you're humor in your coat" is "you hear me in the cold". That's what it sounds like, and it finally makes sense with the following line "you don't know how long I have been". |

By the way, the 12-tone composition line is a reference to the 20th century musical movement Serialism, which is atonal and consists of all 12 tones of the musical scale used in turn. It generally sounds completely horrible. |

I think instead of "cold iron" it might be "cold ire". Either makes sense, but ire seems more natural to me. |

Damn
I was about to say the Captain Beefheart thing. I would've felt so clever. But then someone leapt in ahead of me and felt all clever instead. Frunobulax, you wanker.
Great song though. |

| Morrissey – Everyday Is Like Sunday Lyrics

Does anyone know if this is any connection to the Of Montreal song "Every Day Feels Like Sunday"? I can't determine if it's a very fast cover with different lyrics and a slightly different chorus.
"Every day feels like Sunday, baby,
Every day feels so good"
Certainly a different theme. |

| Hot Chip – The Beach Party Lyrics

This song seems to mainly consist of non-too-subtle sexual innuendo. That said there's something extremely summery about it.
Favourite line - "hot love on a platter, let me be your dancer".
What a great song. |

| The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics
| 19 years ago

Someone mentioned Girlfriend in a Coma the book (by Douglas Coupland). The connection between the song and the book seems to be little, except that the book is strewn with Smiths and Morrissey references. One character laments at one point "Bigmouth strikes again" while another later on finds the place she's in boring because "Everyday is like Sunday."
My two cents on the meaning of the song (which without a doubt is very black-humoured) is that it's about a guy who's probably put his girlfriend in the coma and is experiencing some rather mixed emotions about it. But all that's been said before.
I don't think it's about Morrissey being gay. |
