Paul McCartney – Maybe I'm Amazed Lyrics 19 years ago
Sorry Astronauts, I guess I assume others have been around as long as I have and just KNOW what a family guy McCartney is/was. He and Linda were rarely seen apart during most of their marriage. Linda died in 1997 (I beleive) from cancer - Paul was with her til the end. Maybe I'm Amazed was about the love of his life.

The Beatles – Memphis, Tennessee (Chuck Berry cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
There are a lot of songs listed here that were written by other people, but the Beatles recorded a version of it.

This one was from the Decca sessions. John does the lead vocal.

The Beatles – Come and Get It Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, Paul did a great demo of this song (which is included on Anthology 3). I always liked the irony that a big named star like Paul McCartney 'gave' a hit song to a group (Badfinger) and the song had lines like "If you want it, here it is come and get it", and "will you walk away from a fool and his money". Seems like an autobiographical song about itself.

The Beatles – I'll Be Back Lyrics 19 years ago
Ah yes, the complexities of a relationship. Insecurities. Leaving so the other person will want you back. But they don't. Ouch. He obviously loves her more than she loves him - that's why he keeps "coming back".

The Beatles – I've Just Seen a Face Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh, one more thing. The song title. Sure, we all take it for granted now (especially if you've heard it as many times as I have) but it's really an unusual title for a long song, no? Not what one would usually expect for a title. Weird. Quirky. I love it.

The Beatles – I've Just Seen a Face Lyrics 19 years ago
I think you're right - it's about love at first sight.

I love the acoustic feel and the fast pace. The way he rolls the words off his tongue without stuttering is amazing. Macca's sense of timing on this song is incredible.

I've always thought the chorus of this song (falling, yes I'm falling) sounds like a nice surpise. Not sure why, maybe it's because it goes from being a very good song to being a GREAT song once the chorus starts.

The Beatles – It Won't Be Long Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought this song captured the pure energy of the Beatles. Possibly better than most of their hits (right up there with She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand at least). If you've never heard this song check it out.

This is most definitely a song by John.

The Beatles – Rain Lyrics 19 years ago
Sit-her-down-now-memory-Raaaaain

At least that'w what the backwards part at the end always sounded like to me before I realized it was the song backwards. Amazing that the music doesn't sound that different.

Great 'drone' sound created by the drums and the lead guitar. Paul was really experimenting with his bass playing on this song and Paperback Writer - bass runs and such that he hadn't done before.

The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) Lyrics 19 years ago
I like this song because it truly sounds like it was recorded live in the studio. I can picture the 4 of them actually playing this while it's being recorded. Plus, it ROCKS. Much better than the first version and a great lead-in to A Day In The Life.

The Beatles – There's a Place Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is a 2 minute masterpiece. It's always been my favorite song from Please Please Me.

The tight vocal harmonies on this song are KILLER! And to think this was pretty much recorded live in the studio - Amazing! Even the outtakes of this song are impressive.

I've always assumed it was about just escaping into ones own mind and shutting out the outside world. Or maybe about being in love and thoughts of that love keep him from finding that inner peace. Hmmm... Not sure, but a GREAT song.

The Moody Blues – Melancholy Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Apparently, this is one of those love/hate songs - people seem to love it or hate it. I love it.

Okay, I don't have a clue what the words mean. I know the author was fairly religious, so it definitely has those overtones to it.

I like that it sets a 'mood' and paints a picture with the words. I can 'see' the stars falling down and I can 'see' the angry voices on the wind. I also love the dual acoustic guitars (that's Hayward AND Pinder playing guitars) and how the song builds with the keyboards.

Paul McCartney – With a Little Luck Lyrics 19 years ago
Great track. Underrated. Lyrically I think it's simply an optimistic 'relationship' song. Kind of along the lines of We Can Work It Out.

If you've only heard this song on the radio you owe it to yourself to hear it on CD. It's got layers and layers of keyboards and little nuances that get lost on radio. Also, the single version of this cut out the best verse - the part about Rocketing Skywards, sung in Pauls 'screamer' voice, like Oh Darling.

Paul McCartney – Heart Of The Country Lyrics 19 years ago
Pure McCartney. Kind of a funkier Mother Natures Son. I think Paul had either just purchased and/or moved to a farm in Scotland around the time this song came out.

Paul McCartney – Deliver Your Children Lyrics 19 years ago
Denny Laine sang lead vocals on 2 songs from London Town. Both were about Children too. The first song was fantasy-like; this song is a bit more real-world and about struggling to do right for your children (and maybe going off course).

Not the strongest lyrics, but a great bass line and acoustic guitars. Although (I think) this is credited as a McCartney song, I can't help but wonder if Laine wrote it - it doesn't seem McCartney-ish in the least.

Paul McCartney – C Moon Lyrics 19 years ago
C Moon was supposed to represent a circle and be the opposite of L7 with represents 'square' (i.e. not hip). So, C Moon equals cool.

Not my favorite song although it shows up on EVERY greatest hits package - it must have sentimental value for Paul.

The Moody Blues – I Never Thought I'd Live To Be A Million Lyrics 19 years ago
Space travel and aging. Einstein had a theory about it. I don't remember exactly, but if your travelling the speed of light the aging process slows down (something to that effect). The album this is from (To Our Childrens...) is about space travel and being in space a loooong time. Also see "I'd Never Thought I'd Love to Be a Hundred".

The space traveller is aging (a LOT). "All of his other children" refer to everyone that's been born while he's been travelling in space.

The Moody Blues – Floating Lyrics 19 years ago
Obviously this song is about being on the moon. But I think it's seen from the perspective of a child and how they would view being on the moon (jumping around, rock candy, all fun). Incidently the song that preceeds this one on To Our Childrens Childrens Children is The Eyes of a Child (With the eyes of a child you must come out and see...).

The Moody Blues – It's Up To You Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about new love and some of the uncertainty that comes with it. The feeling that you've given your heart and the other person is in control of it.

The Moody Blues – Haunted Lyrics 19 years ago
This song seems to be a continuation of the theme of long lost love (Who Are you Now, and I Know You're Out There Somewhere).

A different sounding song from the Moodies with the du-du-du du-du-du backing vocals and finger snapping. A song that on first listening will make you say WTF? but will grow on you with repeated listenings.

The Moody Blues – Had To Fall In Love Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is a song about being away from home - possibly touring - and missing home life. "Searching for my dreams in the sky" could be searching for his 'musical' dream when what he really wants is waiting at home for him.

A very underrated song. Great acoustic number - even has Ray playing a (rare) harmonica. Everyone else seems to have Driftwood as their favorite song from the Octave album - this one's mine.

The Moody Blues – Gimme A Little Somethin' Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song was written after the Moodies got their first taste of fame (1967 or 1968). Everyone thinks they have it made because of the fame, but all of the travelling gets in the way of his true goal - love.

I can't believe this song wasn't originally put on one of their albums (before Caught Live+5)- I think it would have fit on In Search of the Lost Chord or Threshold nicely. In fact, I think it had the potential to be a hit single.

The Moody Blues – Candle Of Life Lyrics 19 years ago
Nice interpretation. Loneliness and hope all rolled together in one song. Great, great song. Loneliness, time, love - these are the themes from To Our Childrens Childrens Childrens that this song comes from (great album, too). This song evokes so many emotions all at the same time (sadness, loneliness, hope for love, etc.)

George Harrison – What Is Life Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song was written to intenionally have a possible dual meaning - love of Christ and/or love of another person. It works on both levels, although George probably approached it from the religious side.

Wonderful song. It's one that even people who don't consider themselves Beatles or George fans will like and say "HE sang this?", as if to say they didn't realize George could do 'good' songs.

George Harrison – My Sweet Lord Lyrics 19 years ago
Dhani Harrison plays guitar on the tribue DVD/CD version of this song, but not on the original recording - he wasn't born yet.

I think it's ingenious how he mixed the backing vocals. It starts with Hallelujah, Hallelujah. He's got you singing along now and then he switches to Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna. Before you know it you're chanting Hare Krishna in your brain. It works almost at a subconcious level. I was tricked! Brilliant. I think it's Georges way of saying the religions aren't THAT different.

Oh, and what a crock of shit about him plagerizing He's So Fine - even if it was subconciously. Playing these two songs back-to-back I think most people would be hard pressed to hear any similarity. He lifted a 3-note progression? C'mon!

Aimee Mann – I Could Hurt You Now Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm here! Albeit 3 years later. Hey, I was BUSY!!!

I think she's angry in this song (I think that's true of many of Aimee's songs). When she says I Could Hurt You Now, you'd better not turn your back on her. It seems as if she's has trusted someone who let her down... no wait, more than that... they hurt her. Hurt her so deeply that she could turn violent on them. She put her trust in someone and they took advantage of it.

The Beatles – The Ballad of John and Yoko Lyrics 19 years ago
This isn't an awful song at all. It's great. And Lady Madonna wasn't Johns song, it was Paul's, so blame him (although it's a good song too).

Anyone who truly thinks Yoki is the cause for the Beatles break-up has missed the boat. Blame John. Or blame it on the fact that these 4 guys had spent the last 7 years or so together more than any other non-gay men in history. They were ready for their own space and to live personal lives with their own families. Christ, you KNOW it aint easy.

The Moody Blues – New Horizons Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about birth of Justin Hayward's daughter (?) (I've got love enough for three) AND the passing of Justin Hayward's father (I'm never gonna lose your precious gift) in the same year.

A very, very touching song.

p.s. check out the DTS 5.1 version of this one.

The Moody Blues – You And Me Lyrics 19 years ago
Maybe I shoud elaborate on what I said above. Well, the song mentions a homeless man in ASIA. The Asia reference should be obvious (Vietnam, Korean war). Homeless inplies that his home was either destroyed or he had to flee from it. A Forest Fire in the Valley could be referring to the napalm that was being using in the Vietnamese jungles.

"What will be our last thought.... pain of a burning wound." refers to the soldiers fear of being shot and dying.

"All we are trying to say... is we are all we got" is hope that it'll get better. And it could easily be sympathetic to the people protesting the war. (All we are trying to say ... is give peace a chance).

"You're an ocean full of faces..." I think describes how the Moodies see their audience (perhaps when playing live). They're sending this message to all who will listen.

"We look around in wonder, at the work that has been done..." I think is hope again. We (humans) have the ability to do good things and we shouldn't give up striving for that. The 'wonder' is that people can fly a man to the moon (for example) but still have wars to kill each other. "By the vision of our Father..." could be that god instilled good in us - again, we should strive to embrace that.

GREAT SONG!!!!

The Moody Blues – Vintage Wine Lyrics 19 years ago
I think Vintage Wine = Vintage Music. I think it's about 1960's music and how he was proud to be a part of it because it was about peace and love.

From '63 to '69 was also the Beatles era (coincidently possibly). But they opened doors for lots of English acts (including the Moody Blues) in that time period.

The Moody Blues – Question Lyrics 19 years ago
Hmm, a break-up song, eh? I never quite thought of it that way, but I can see how others might.

I think it's maybe a little different that that. I think it's about living in the real world (which is fast, hectic, sometimes violent, etc.) but WANTING to slow things down to appreciate the love of another. Possibly the song is about the search for that time/place (i.e. utopia) but never being able to find it.

Musically the song takes that same journey. Real life rushing by... finally some time for love (when the songs slows down).... then the hectic real life comes crashing back again.

The Moody Blues – Go Now! Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, although the singer is saying 'Go Now' he really doesn't want her to go at all. She is really saying 'goodbye' to him.

Denny Lane sang this song with the Moody Blues and with Wings (McCartney) on Wings Over America. Personally I like the Wings version better - I think it's sung with more emotion and the horn arrangement adds something to it. Sonically, The Moody Blues version sounds terrible (musically it's fine) - too much modulation or it was simply recorded poorly.

I love this version of this song. Written by Paul Simon and sung on Wings Over America by Denny Lane.

I think it simply says a couple of things. Money won't make you happy and appearances can be deceiving.

Paul McCartney – Helen Wheels Lyrics 19 years ago
A Great song to sing along to while your driving - once you figure all of the words out, I mean.

All of the places he mentions are in England and are where the Beatles toured in the early days (way before coming to America).

If you watch the Beatles Anthology DVD there's a part where they're talking about travelling all over England in their van and how cold it was and how they tried to stay warm. During some of the music they show black and white footage of a van travelling thru nasty weather and all names of the cities and little Englishs town they went to are shown on the screen. Almost all of them from this song are listed.

Paul said this song title came from his Land Rover truck which he affentionately called Helen Wheels (Hell On Wheels).

Paul McCartney – Band on the Run Lyrics 19 years ago
This song consists of 4 different parts - confinement, desperation, escape and running.

Confinement = stuck inside these 4 walls.
desperation = if I ever get out of here
escape = well, the rain exploded
running = band on the run

The confinement part is very subdued, as if he's given up - it's reflective too. The heart starts beating faster when he's thinking about escaping and the desperation of his situation. Crash!!! The Breakout - the release - you can almost 'feel' the freedom. All that's left is to RUN! For ever more.

Paul said it was intentionally written to have several meanings - could be jail cell or trapped in life.

submissions
The Beatles – She Loves You Lyrics 19 years ago
Paul said in an interview that they were always felt competitive when writing songs - not necessarily John vs Paul, but the Beatles vs all of the other local groups. So they would always try to do something a little different. Most of their songs to this point were 1st person narrative (From ME to YOU, Love ME Do, Please Please ME, etc.); this one was from a 3rd person perspective - seeing a relationship from an outsiders point of view.

The Beatles – With a Little Help from My Friends Lyrics 19 years ago
Prostitutes? Beating off? Drugs? Are you guys serious? Are you listening to the same song? Okay, there MAY be a slight drug reference, but I don't think that's what the song is ABOUT. I think it's about what it says helping your friends out.

I think this song is brilliant. I'm sure John and Paul wrote it with Ringo in mind (they were helping their friend out). Ringo does the lead vocal, which is written for his limited range (hey, Ringo knows he's not a great singer - witness his All-Star Band - he IS a genius, though). It's written in a call-and-response style with John and Paul doing the calls (these have the high vocal swings with John and Pauls tight harmonies) and Ringo does the response parts. (Do you need anybody? (J&P) I need somebody to love (Ringo). Pauls bass playing is also a highlight on this song.

Paul McCartney – Lazy Dynamite Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, but I suspect it get's 'lost' in the 4 song medley it's in. It's obviously a love song, although I don't think "Lazy Dynamite" has any meaning - it probably just sounded fun to sing. I love the bass playing and the layered vocals.

I put this song on a cd for a special friend of mine and she thought I was calling her a 'dud'. She picked up on the Lazy Dynamite part but missed the point about "fighting that feeling in her heart". Hmm, in retrospect maybe she didn't HAVE that feeling in her heart.... :(

Paul McCartney – Jet Lyrics 19 years ago
Yep, Jet was his dog. Although it's sung to sound like a girl. Actually, I think the first poster is correct, (not about the universe part), but that there mostly silly lyrics thrown together to sound good. It's one of McCartney's strong points (other examples would be Uncle Albert, Monkberry Moon Delight, Big Barn Bed, The Pound is Sinking, even Band of the Run, etc.)

Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmastime Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm sure this song was intentionally simple, but... he's Paul McCartney. Any holiday song he recorded was destined to be played every year on the radio. I wish he would have come up with some meaningful lyrics as opposed to a "sing-a-long". John Lennon's Happy Xmas is a much better example of a Holiday song with longevity (and I'm a big McCarney fan).

McCartney doing country music - I love it. Paul visited Nashvile (and New Orleans) around the time this was written. Obviously inspired by country music he wanted to make one of his own. This was the b-side to Juniors Farm. I think he simply tried to write/record something in the same style as most country songs of the time. Nice little ditty.

Apparently the Mull of Kintyre is a European(?) landmark, similar to The Grand Canyon in the U.S. I'm not sure where it is.... Scotland, perhaps (that would explain the bagpipes).

This was a big, BIG worldwide hit for Paul, but did very little on the U.S. singles charts.

Paul McCartney – Monkberry Moon Delight Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song. Not sure if this is obvious or just my take on the song, but Monkberry Moon Delight is home-brewed whiskey, like White Lightning. And all of the other nonsense is seen thru a drunken haze.
There's a spoken part at the end (I think) where something is said like: Hey, hey, take a sip of this. What is it? Monkerry Moon De-li-i-i-ight.
As far as a meaning, that's the best I can come up with. I love the song.

Paul McCartney – Maybe I'm Amazed Lyrics 19 years ago
Jeez, Asstronauts, it's not about Heather Mills - it was written 35+ years ago about Linda (wife #1).

This was on his first solo album (McCartney, released in 1970) and no doubt was written during the Beatles break-up. Paul has described the Beatles break-up as being quite emotional for him (probably all of them) - he said he felt a sense of loss and was depressed for a while and really didn't know what he was going to do. I think Linda was his salvation during this period and this song is a reflection of it.

John Lennon – Mind Games Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's another endorsement for peace and love and he's saying that it has to start in your mind - i.e. if you (and everyone) can feel it and think it, it could actually come true.

There's a Mobile Fidelity (MFSL) version of the Mind Games CD available and it sounds much, MUCH better than the original release. Highly recommended.

Love IS the answer.
