not a mainstream country fan, but this song will break your heart. Really affecting and well written tune

submissions
Dropkick Murphys – The State of Massachusetts Lyrics 15 years ago
"i think the title of the song is a play on words...using state to mean a country AND the culture of it...

p.s i wanna make it clear i do not link child abuse and a bad government to massachusets"

-----------------------------------------------------------

I do. that's first thing I think of when it comes to MA. Also, Minnesota is known for witches, and Idaho for streaking. Texas uses potatoes for currency and Delaware gives out Peyote like it was chewing gum/ It's all true

Guided by Voices – My Valuable Hunting Knife Lyrics 15 years ago
sounds like a really talented 14 year old boy playing a song in his bedroom - HIT IT! COME ON!, wonderful

Buffalo Tom – Larry Lyrics 16 years ago
Here's a post descendent, great song!!

Ahh, a world with more BT fans, one can only dream. Only Mineral is a better song, but not by much, good to see the BT boys are playing to big crowds in Europe right now

submissions
Faith Hill – Love Ain't Like That Lyrics 16 years ago
just wonderful, goes against the usual Fairy-Tale idea of love and aims for a realist approach how the best kind of love is developed over time, through loyalty and honesty

submissions
James Taylor – Gaia Lyrics 16 years ago
a lament to the environment and what we do to the world as humans

submissions
Tom Petty – Swingin' Lyrics 16 years ago
wonderful background vocals by Howie Epstein, former bass player of the Heartbreakers who died of a heroin overdose in 2003. RIP Howie

submissions
Patty Griffin – Tony Lyrics 16 years ago
wow, I'd sure have to disagree with that first comment. A remarkable and sympathetic song, uses a slur to illustrate how guys like Tony are treated when they are young. Patty is just about the best

submissions
The Sundays – Skin & Bones Lyrics 16 years ago
what a song from a criminally underrated album

submissions
The Sundays – Hideous Towns Lyrics 16 years ago

AHHHHHHHH, now that's more like it, thanks kenderuh, what a song, and check out the video on the Los abandoned website or youtube. Four of the coolest band members you've ever seen plus the beautiful girls from van nuys middle school. It's just a little better then perfect

A wonderfully subtle song of longing for a time when our natural resources weren't destroyed for the almighty $$

submissions
John Mayer – Belief Lyrics 17 years ago
deeply meaningful, and it's too bad that some won't hear it because they don't like John Mayer. Songwriting of the highest quality. I think it's his best

submissions
The Hold Steady – Stuck Between Stations Lyrics 17 years ago
"She was a really cool kisser and she wasn’t all that strict of a Christian.
She was a damn good dancer but she wasn’t all that great of a girlfriend" - can anyone go back to listening to Fall Out Boy or All American Rejects after hearing those lines? Really?

submissions
Feist – 1234 Lyrics 17 years ago
innocent in the way that's it sung and performed. They performed it on Conan last night with Feist singing and a backing band and mixed chorus of very normal but still cool looking men and women dressed in matching light blues. Of course it was incredible. Pure unbridled joy. Except the line "You know who you are" hints at something more. What a song!

Ryan Adams – Cherry Lane Lyrics 17 years ago
there's so many different parts to this song, starts out like he's singing in a honkytonk bar, then moves into a haunting ballad, then speeds up towards the end with the incredible aforementioned refrain of "I could never get close enough, to you" - at this point feels more like a confirmation, a sense of finality. Then a wonderful guitar part wraps it up like a bow on a Christmas Present. There's nobody like the talented Mr. Adams

submissions
The National – Karen Lyrics 17 years ago
pretty remarkable stuff - looks like The National may soon be big - they deserve it, a great song

submissions
Michael Jackson – Human Nature Lyrics 17 years ago
a tremendous piece of art. Love9998 is exactly right, in my opinion - the song is about getting out in New York and experiencing all the city has to offer. Tough to separate his personal life with his body of work, bu this is great stuff

submissions
Tilly and the Wall – Fell Down the Stairs Lyrics 17 years ago
It's a sing along song. No need to analyze the lyrics, it's meant to be sung with kids in the park or adults at a party. Takes a terrible mood and makes it happy. In 3 minutes. the perfect pop song.

submissions
Alison Krauss – Baby, Now That I've Found You Lyrics 17 years ago
wonderful on the live album

submissions
Buffalo Tom – Kitchen Door Lyrics 17 years ago
For many BT fans this is their favorite, not mine, but since it's BT it still better then most anything else you'll hear

submissions
Our Lady Peace – Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I would disagree on posts claiming how terrible these lyrics are, this band wrote the song after being inspired by a cancer patient going through radiation treatments - I would venture to say that this song, in the 3 minutes that it lasts, has helped numerous people through trying times both physical and emotional. A tremendous and uplifting song

submissions
Regina Spektor – Hotel Song Lyrics 17 years ago
not sure what the exact meaning of the song is - to me it takes on a new meaning each time I listen to it. To anyone who thinks a Mariah Carey is a great singer because she overdoes every note with her histrionics, they should listen to this song. Her singing is wonderfully melodic, understated, and clever. A truly remarkable song

submissions
Steve Winwood – Valerie Lyrics 17 years ago
Great Stuff - Winwood said he wrote the song because he knew of people in the music scene who were battling drug addiction and he just got so tired of seeing what the drug use was doing to the people around him- Valerie was one such person ("Then she just blew away". "It can't be that warm with the wind in her arms")

He is saying he can help her ("Call on Me") but she never does, caught in the throes of addiction

In his own words:

'Valerie', for instance, isn't a song remembering this girl I was madly in love with. It's not that at all. It's a plea to a certain girl singer - someone I don't know personally but who Will Jennings had drawn my attention to - not to destroy herself with drugs. The narrator in the song is saying, 'I'm back, and I'm the same person I used to be - so why isn't she?' "

BTW: the lyric is "I can't but help remember just where she touched me" a small distinction but enhances the song greatly

The New Pornographers – Chump Change Lyrics 17 years ago
Their Best Song - towards the end the song really gets charging, mesches perfectly with the above line quoted by Jackie

Los Abandoned – (I Didn't Mean To) Stalk U Lyrics 17 years ago
what? nothing on "Van Nuys (Es Very Nice)" yet? the best song of the year? Come on Rockers, let's get some lyrics and comments on that Los Abandoned song! I would, but of course I am cursed with incredible laziness

Cat Power – Lived in Bars Lyrics 17 years ago
Pretty amazing stuff. To answer nbrii's previous question, I think it's just the back vocal singing "sha-bop, sha-bop, sha-bop" perfect as the band kicks into a beat that sounds like a high school dance from about 40 years ago

submissions
Beth Orton – Someone's Daughter Lyrics 17 years ago
beth weaves her voice around the song like a tapestry, grooving until the end with the beat to create a sublime piece of art
