Chump Change Lyrics

I stole a page from your book,
And a line from your page,
And flew into a lesbian rage.
Cursing mine and my own rotten luck,
Another nude descends a staircase to get fucked.

A city scene, darkness falls,
Now skate hard down the gallery walls.
Explore those themes,
I heard your worship formed by queens,
Hey, so is mine now.

There is a plague on,
There is a rat-tailed ensemble, burying all of our hits in the sand.
The same sand a desert uses,
The same sand a desert uses.

Now, wipe that look from your face;
The world is that which is the case.
It is okay to be seen,
Don't dethrone the drama queen
Just for putting everybody in their place.

There's a plague on,
There's a rat-tailed ensemble burying all of our hits in the sand.
The same sand a desert uses,
The same sand a desert uses.
Now, wipe that look from your face,
The world is that which is the case;
It is okay to be seen,
Don't dethrone the drama queen
Just for putting everybody in their place.

Yeah, wipe that look from your face,
The world is that which is the case.
It's okay to be seen,
Don't dethrone the drama queen
Just for putting everybody in their place.

Go, don't stay, just throw it all away.
There is you and then there is your body.

Go, don't stay, just throw it all away.
There is you and then there is your body.

Go, don't stay, just throw it all away.
There is you and then there is your body.

I totally agree, this is an excellent song. Truly superb.

I don't know what "the same sand the desert uses" is supposed to mean, but I think that it's an awesome and beautiful line. I love it.

A great song, indeed -- as would be any song that manages to refer to two towering achievements of 20th century art and thought (Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase AND Wittgenstein's Tractatus ("The world is that which is the case)) while just plain kicking ass. Does pop music get any better than this?

I think this is their best song, yet no comments? I'm not entirely sure what to make of it... anyone?

I think it's about high school, and the bitter jealousy and resentment of watching the girls you revere fucking the rat-tailed bastards that you hate, and how everybody makes a point not to care. As much as "the same sand a desert uses" means anything, it probably refers to the desert's barrenness, and thus, burying your head in nihilism - a common response in youth to rapid loss of innocence.

my favorite line:

there is you and then there is your body

becuase some people just aren't what they look like at all.

I'd interpret it as being, Some people take for granted what isn't there or expect things that cannot or may not be. Every person is different and although a lot of things repeat, How can a person say what will happen in another two seconds?

Did a bird hit your window just now?

Their Best Song - towards the end the song really gets charging, mesches perfectly with the above line quoted by Jackie

GOD I love this song, my favourite line: 'I stole a page from your book And a line from your page And flew into a lesbian rage' I always heard this line as 'take you to a lesbian rave' and thought it was cute, odd and slightly kinky, but lesbian RAGE is just as good.

I guess I've always thought this song (at least in part) is about the pretentiousness surrounding art, particularly that everybody is trying to be 'new/unique/different'. Referencing Duchamp, is not only funny, but expresses the complete irony of the artist preaching the death of art, to now be REVERED but practically WORSHIPED by the supposedly dead institution. This goes on with 'Inspired by queens', which seems to point to something 'deep', but with the 'So is mine now' it just reveals the falseness of this, how art is often just a competition, everyone either trying to be or imitating the 'new thing'.

Anyway, great GREAT song. Makes me want to dance!

I love The New Pornographers, and agree it's a desert, a ruins, the music business is dead, but all the whining, while I sympathize, get's a bit old. I think Chump Change reflects some angst between band mates.

"There's a plague on, there's a rat-tailed ensemble burying all of our hits in the sand. The saints in the desert use their heads."

So, they're Saint John wandering the desert that's the music business - don't wig out. Carl whines a lot, obviously Dan does too, and with a lesbian rage, and yes it's unfair. But guys, we're all getting fucked with the exception of the bankers riding the gravy train at Goldman or JPMorgan; although perhaps that wasn't quite clear when Electric Version was produced.

My thoughts were that it's about a girl who the singer may be into, who is dramatic and 'artsy' but is actually pretty derivative and dramatic.
