The Used – Cut Up Angels Lyrics 7 years ago
To me the song makes me think a sadomasochistic fling, or sorts. The guy is a sadist, and the girl is a masochist with possible past trauma. The song talks about how there's nothing good about the relationship between these two people, who both have their problems and are just bad for enabling one another.

There is definitely a lot of sexual references, such as cutting up lips and stuffing things in (rough sex). The chorus definitely is "lust" as it says so in the liner notes of the album, and refers to the guy loosing himself in lust and feeling like he can't control himself (having a gun to one's head), despite the fact that it does little for her sexually. Likewise, her sexual kinks do not seem to get him off. The lyrics lead me to think she has some kind of sexual suicide fetish. In the song he acknowledges that her past of abuse is probably why she is so self-destructive or masochistic.

Chevelle – Breach Birth Lyrics 11 years ago
Basically the song is about those daring to think of themselves as an individual rather than part of a collective. Rather than having a destiny that you were born into from the start, that you create your own destiny. While most of society is bound to a large degree of conformity, many long to see the world actually stray from this path it's on. Courage, or daring to live as you see fit, to peruse what calls you, is the answer to awakening something new on a global scale.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Naked Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about the band's struggles up to the point when this record was made, which jives with the theme of cynicism on the record. They had been involved in the music scene for a long time, even before forming GGD in 1987. It has been said they were never received well in their local scene back in the day, and were basically written off by everyone at the time. This song seems to express the frustration of being a nobody band after many years of playing and putting out records.

"Never thought I'd say a word" alludes to the fact that he never expected to even be singing for the band. The chorus "shots in the dark/never heard" refers to their work as band up to that point had proven fruitless.

Ironically, this was the album that gave them their big break, and they'd totally sell out on the next one to become one of the biggest bands of the late 90s.

This is obviously about the "smart phone" revolution and everybody's obsession with Facebook and the like to the point that they've become dependent on it, and feel incomplete without it. They've become transfixed and have lost touch with reality.

Horse the Band – Between The Trees Lyrics 13 years ago
As a sufferer, for me this song could certainly be about a depersonalization or dissociative disorder, something that is typical a symptom of highly level anxiety and even depression. Given that he comments on a doctor, that all his vital signs are in check, yet he still feels strange to himself and lost in the universe. "Something's coming over me, like I've lost my mind, but the world is open wide" is an eerily accurate description of how DP feels.

This song is a critique of modern society's transition to what sociologists are calling the "image based culture" we now live in, the expression of everything through imagery.

10 Years – The Autumn Effect Lyrics 15 years ago
I see this song as sort of the thread that sums up the theme of the album, of course, hence the song title.

As I have a tendency to interpret a lot of lyrics to be of social commentary, I see this a fairly simple, in a way almost classic, metaphor for humanity. The autumn representing a decay, loss of innocence, loss of beauty, and ultimately a loss of humanity. The rise and fall of empires and societies, as an inevitable cycle of events. The autumn effect is basically the inevitable point of decay everything will at on point reach. Seasons are a very accurate representation of worldly things, a birth, a rise, and fall, and an end.

The cool breeze is an omen, foreshadowing. We cannot reason how we've lost our way, as it's typical of us to think of ourselves and our intentions as all but impure. Yet, the narration conveys a sense acceptance, rather than denial "willingly embracing Karma's kiss of decay". As the breeding and manifestation of our evil is shrouded and difficult to see, it subsides in the autumn-like landscape of our current state, it has "stolen the breath of our body, mind and soul". We cannot fight or reason with words, the impending and seemingly imminent outcome.

Because it makes it sound like a cheesy love song? Which, isn't the band's style, nor does it pertain to the theme of the song or album for that matter. At least, I'd imagine that's why they took it out.

I cringed the first time I heard that part, so this comes as good news.

CurruptedbySound - I wasn't expecting "heavy metal thrash punk bullshit music" as you call it, I was just expected to like the album as well as all the others. Most hardcore from Chicago was not like RA. I have had no problem with their sound. Just a little disappointed in the over-all regression in this album. Agree to disagree.

coshise215 - The Good Left Undone was definitely not a love song. I think the majority of listeners would agree, it was about the Earth.

Rise Against – From Heads Unworthy Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know why, and feel free to disagree, but something about this song's lyrics make me think it is a pro-gay/lesbian song. This wouldn't be out of line for a band like Rise Against, similar bands to them have written about the topic.

The versus just seem to make sense with the theory - "You can’t disown us now, we are your own flesh and blood, We don’t disappear just because your eyes are shut" and "This is the family that we crossed or never had This is a war that was lost the day that it began"

Possibly about how the older generation, the parents are unaccepting and try to disown them.

Also hints in the pre-choruses "Not one single bone in your back, own up to how you let us down"

Expressing the dissapointment in the families that are unsupportive and let them down.

The chorus would just kind of indicate how times are changing and those in power and those who run our society with their antiquated notions are crumbling and being replaced by more open individuals. The bridge also makes sence with this theory if you think about it...

However, given this, I don't know how the acoustic part would fit into it. Other than saying that he's not in this for the money or fortune, but to take on issues and spread a message. Addressing it to those who's castles are crumbling.

Just my thoughts.

Rise Against – Kotov Syndrome Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe one of the better on the mediocre album. I see it as being about how our nation (US) is seeing a decline and sacrafice in personal freedoms and privacy all the name of "security". Which, many see as the biggining phases of a police-state or dictatorship. The referrences to walls being built and watchtowers point to this. The sword is a referrece to living by predetermined tradition, and being given no obvious chance of change. The narrorator has faith that the "children" - the youth, can and will find independence and fight "these hands" the ones who hold the sword, afterwards honoring those who have died unjustly. The bridge is basically saying that we've seen and are continuing to see where things are heading, the people aren't going to forgive or forget, and they are perhaps ready to cut free their attachment to a system that doesn't care about them. Just my take.

Notice how he pronounces flag like flayg. Haha.

Nonpoint – Wait Lyrics 18 years ago
I see this song as being about a chronic state of procrastination and impossible perfectionism, and a dramatic reflection on how it's ruled, and possibily ruined certain aspects, and oppertunites of ones life, that is leaving them feeling guitly, agitated, and restless. Realizing the need of change, and that there is no justification to waiting. That they must take chances, and face consequences.

Cold – It's All Good Lyrics 18 years ago
In my own opinion, I think this song is one of the two songs on the album that are about his father leaving his family and him when he was young. The other song being Sick of Man. Sick of Man took the perspective of the actual event of his father leaving quite a long time ago, where as It's All Good is a view point on the matter several years afterwards. He's reflecting on his childhood throughts, and found that his feelings have changed. He's found himself feeling less affected that he once had seemed, in the end, everything would go on to turn out fine, hense the song tittle. I think the drug references maybe indicate that his father was possibly a drug addictict in his recollection. Just my thoughts.

Nine Inch Nails – Complications of the Flesh Lyrics 19 years ago
This song can only be found on the third edition of the "We're In This Together" single. A really rare single to own. It is my opinion that the song wasn't intended to have a meaning, but I'd say it has something to do with sex if anything. The song is a collaboration of the songs "Complication" and "The New Flesh", and is mostly just an instrumental.

Ok... Not sure if any of you have said this but... Well, the song obviously is about drugs. But it's criticism toward people who do drugs. I really don't think Dexter Holland is Straight Edge, but this song sure sounds like it. Basically saying (in a sarcastic way) why would you want to live and remember, when you can just get fucked up and loose out? Not a pro-drug song, and anti one the way I see it.

AFI – Cruise Control Lyrics 19 years ago
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet. This song is pretty obvious of the literal meaning, but it also seems obvious that he wrote it to represent his straight edge lifestyle. One of the beliefs in being straight edge is no casual/promiscuous sex.

Nirvana – Dumb Lyrics 19 years ago
I heard somewhere before, what the meaning behind this song was. I'm pretty sure it wasn't this site, but if this meaning is already on here forgive me.

I heard the song was about how he envied "dumb" people. Dumb people, in his view, were people who had the ability to go through life care-free and never get depressed, or feel the slightest remorse over anything or anyone. He wished that he was this way himself, because he hated always caring so much about things. So in a rare occasions that he was feeling happy, he though himself to be either dumb like everyone else, or for once he was genuinely happy.

I'm pretty sure that's what I read. It seems like the most sensible meaning I've ever heard.

Spineshank – Grey Lyrics 19 years ago
My guess is that it would be about how the song writter's life has become bland, and seemingly "colorless". He's just living a dull, meaningless life, and somehow he is quite content in feeling this way. As for the verses, possibly he is no longer going to feel guilty for his life turning out this way, and he also feels he has nothing left to fear in his life, and does no longer fear the pain he always used to have.

Smile Empty Soul – Fight Of A Suburban Couple Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is basically self-expanitory... Yet it could go just a little bit deeper than it appears. A theory of mine is that the song title is taken literally; just a suburban couple who are having trouble understanding why one another want's to see the world they way they do. The first one, who would rather believe the world is nothing but a fun and games with no worries, is the one complaining about how the second one cares so much about what's really happening in the world and in the news. The second one responds by sarcastically saying "We could watch yuppy famlies, Playing for great prizes, We could forget about this fucked up world, While tv blinds us" The second also begins to complain about how the first is so into game shows and nonsense like that when they could be watching something more relevant like the new or war coverage. The first one responds back by sarcatically saying "We could watch fucked up families, As they fuck eachother, We could forget about the good things in this world together."

... It's probably what you were thinking anyway. However, I like the song, soft but good.
