| Death Cab for Cutie – This Charming Man (The Smiths cover) Lyrics

Frente!'s cover of "Bizarre Love Triangle" is far more listenable than the New Order original. Seu Jorge's Bowie covers on the Life Aquatic soundtrack were pretty good, though maybe not better than the originals. A lot of times Bob Dylan covers are better than his originals, most notably Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower". And, personally, I like this cover better than the Smiths original. But then, I heard this one first. |

| Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics

The first time I heard this song it came up on a Pandora station. I thought about Elliott Smith pretty strongly. A little about Kurt Cobain, maybe, that's mostly the 'reinventing the wheel' because Kurt's been so often emulated over the years.
The second time I heard this song, it came up on the very same Pandora station, immediately following "Late" by Ben Folds, which is blatantly about Elliott Smith. I'm not saying this confirms anything, but I like the sound of it.
Somebody on the first page of comments quoted Bob Dylan, but in doing so proved the opposite of their point. I'll instead invoke head Flaming Lip Wayne Coyne, who said that the songs are really up to us to interpret. So everyone's a winner. Except those who said David Dondero. Ya'll are way off.

| The Cure – Doing the Unstuck Lyrics

These lyrics remind me of "Gone!" from Wild Mood Swings.
Also, speaking of Wild Mood Swings, this song sounds pretty bi-polar to me. Like coming into a good day out of a crappy low.
Sound fair?
Also, it's quite possible to have sexual imagery in a song that's not specifically about sex. It's a thing Robert sings about sometimes, though. |

| Bob Dylan – Mama, You Been on My Mind Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
What I'm getting from this one is that Bob and "Mama" were in a relationship, and she's moved on to someone else. He just happened to be thinking about her a lot one day.
My explanation also illustrates how Bob Dylan songs are also really good at letting the listener impose his own story on a song. That's good songwriting. |

| Saves the Day – Can't Stay the Same Lyrics

Hey, way to call out some dualism, YeahsodoI. I'd been taking the story arc fairly literally, but you bring up a good point. I still think that "In Reverie's" apparent failure kind of hurt Chris's feelings, like what happened with Rivers when "Pinkerton" tanked. That sort of thing. |

| Saves the Day – Because You Are No Other Lyrics

This album seems very conceptual to me, showing the arc of a relationship failing. That's putting it lightly, given the feel of the last half of the album, but that's essentially it. I'll need to give the album a few more listens before I can get things worked out for sure. |

My first thought was Lavinia Whately from Lovecraft's "the Dunwich Horror", but the lyrics don't really seem to fit that. |

Sorry, just being snarky. Nothing personal. But really, he was doing songs for this film anyway. And just because it's computer animated, based on a comic strip, and not full of swears doesn't make it a 'kiddie move' necessarily. Just a bit of all-ages fun. |

| Ben Folds – Rockin' The Suburbs (Over the Hedge version) Lyrics

Very astute, worsethansex. The only reason an artist would ever think of performing a song in any manner other than the one you love so deeply is not only derived from a monetary motivation, but also part of a contract that said artist has signed with Beelzebub himself which, though labeling the artist a sellout, ensures him a wealth-filled and debauched lifestyle. You have my deepest condolensces that Ben Folds chose to take your precious little fuck words out of a song that only had them in the first place as a satirical commentary on a then-current musical trend.
Yours must be a very hard life, Worsethansex. What else could motivate you to utter, albeit in type, a phrase so lurid and tactless as "fuck this song." What on earth could you be implying? I certainly don't like the sounds of it. |

The line "I'm fighting this assignment" reminds me of the book "the Chocolate War." Nothing else about the lyrics does, though. I agree with Free Brownies, Pinback songs make little to no sense [at least on a superficial level] |

| The Cure – Strange Attraction Lyrics

This song has always reminded me of "Mint Car," as though that should've come first, then "Strange Attraction" on the album. It sounds like "Mint Car" was written in the rapture of the initial relationship, then "Strange Attraction" written in hindsight. You get a much more melancholy feel that way... |

Okay, I take back my statement about leaving the past behind. I saw them two days after I said that and they played something from all five albums and "I'm Sorry I'm Leaving." "In Reverie" was pretty well represented, they played "Where Are You," "Tomorrow Too Late," and "Anywhere With You." |

| Fall Out Boy – Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover) Lyrics

This whole thing makes me laugh. I haven't heard the version in question, just Joy Division's. I just think it's funny how fired up people get over a cover song.
It's better than the original!!!
It's sacrilegious!!!
BLAH!
So Fall Out Boy likes Joy Division. Who cares? You play songs you like. Really, the cardinal sin of cover songs is to make it boring, like the Offspring's version of "I Wanna Be Sedated." That's all I have to say. Ya'll are pretty high strung. |

| Pink Floyd – [The Wall Concept] Lyrics

Very superficially put, 'vanafan. The character Pink couldn't possibly represent Roger Waters or Syd Barret or anyone other than the fictional Pink himself. Of course the band aren't clever enough to use him symbolically. Oh know. Rock bands never write songs about how they feel. All those prog bands really were just writing about outer space and wizards and crap like that. Glad you cleared that up for me. Dingus. |

| Saves the Day – Rise Lyrics

I'm actually excited to hear people say positive things about In Reverie. Seems like a neglected step child. It's really not that bad. Every StD album takes some getting used to. And you can't call somebody stupid because he likes an album you don't. Just remember that nobody liked Pinkerton, either. People get too caught up with an album and it becomes almost impossible to follow it up with something that pleases both the fans and the band.
Might I add I love the weird rhythm in the verses of this one. |

This actually reminds me of a film called "Waking Life." A very similar premise. Kind of reminds me of "Fight Club" as well.
I think it's funny that Saves the Day's happiest album got the poorest reception, so the new album is very bitter. People sneering at your happiness. |

| Saves the Day – Driving In The Dark Lyrics

|
I'm a simple mind and my first assumption is that it's about a girl, but the specifics aren't that important, I guess. The verses describe a scene of confusion and turmoil [kind of like the whole 'Sound the Alarm' album]. The helicopters and the chimps on TV [reporters with bad news] and what not are balanced by driving in the dark, leaving the comotion for something or someone who calms the minds. |

| Saves the Day – The End Lyrics
|
I see 'the End' as representing rock stardom. At least at the begining of the song. The pressures of following up 'Stay What You Are' and to an extent the recognition they started to receive from more mainstream press. I don't want to blame every song on this album for the poor reception that 'In Reverie' received, but that is an underlying theme. Of course I don't imagine Chris is always dwelling on it. It's just that a lot of the emotions on this album could be easily linked to that, among other things. That's just what I hear repeating itself.
As a side note, I kinda wish Rivers Cuomo had put out an album about how frustrated he was with 'Pinkerton's initial failure, instead of locking himself away for four years and releasing an shiny pop album to prove he could and compensate for 'Pinkerton's experimentation and soul-baring. |

| Saves the Day – Sound the Alarm Lyrics

|
|
This is such a dreary song. You can see how Chris feels really lonely, but "nobody will sound the alarm" because it results in good music. There's a whole lot of lonliness and paranoia on this album. It's on the edge of "this isn't funny anymore." |

| Saves the Day – Say You'll Never Leave Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
|
This is definetly one of the most dynamic songs on Sound the Alarm. It has the classic StD blood and guts, but sounds very appropriate for the new album. The hard thing about StD is that every album since Stay What You Are has been strikingly different from the previous. I think that's why Ups and Downs was so comforting, it brought everything together in sort of a reverse genesis [starting with the newest song]. |

| Saves the Day – Hell Is Here Lyrics
|
|
I read a review of this album saying that, unlike other StD albums, this one doesn't end on a hopeful note. In fact, there's very little cheer on this album. Lots of death and dying and it's mostly Chris this time, whereas before his anger lashed outward a lot. This song is typical of the mood of the album. I feel that in an age where album art is mostly intended to catch the eye, the dark reds of "Sound the Alarm" are very indicitave of the music itself. Not black and empty, but red and panic-y. The world's not over, but it's rapidly burning and Chris is a nervous observer. |

| Saves the Day – Dying Day Lyrics

I definitely get the feeling that StD is trying to leave the early days behind. I've seen them three [soon to be four] times and never heard them play anything from Can't Slow Down. Last time I saw them they didn't even play "Freakish." "In Reverie" was kinda like StD's "Pinkerton" and Chris took that pretty hard and seems to want to focus on the now, which was really hard when "In Reverie" essentially tanked. |

Yeah, too bad Episode I was the biggest disappointment since....ever. George Lucas had the whole world in his hand on this one and chose to make a super-marketable childrens' movie rather than an enjoyable instalment in the Star Wars series. This song always reminded me of a band that used to rock Holland for a long time, but in the wake of a changing musical landscape decided to jump on what they see as the bandwagon because that's how they got famous the first time. This song is the best thing Nerf Herder's done since their debut and it's so unbelievably obscure. I can't find tabs for it anywhere. It's not that tough, but I've got a terrible ear.
Anyway, it's about a girl who thinks she's too big for the world. |
