can i just say that hearing stephen colbert quote these lines to john darnielle was one of the greatest moments in all of television history? |

one of my favorite songs, i can't believe i'm the first one to post on it.
i think it's a couple the morning after some huge fight, where it's obvious that it's not going to work, but they try to smooth it over and pretend it's normal. |

I've always wondered if this in someway fit into the alpha couple. just the whole thing about trying to get out of tampa, reminds me of alphonse mambo. |

absolutely beautiful song.
I think it's just very simply about a man coming back to this place to die. maybe he grew up here, or maybe "going down the old road" refers to the same path everyone takes through death. |

yeah, no it was a joke written for a product themed compilation, "object lessons". there's a great franklin bruno song on there too. |

I can't believe no one's commented on this song yet, it's far and away one of my favorite going to songs.
i especially love the last three lines of the first verse, and he sings them perfectly. also, i think it's "there's a dead feeling lingering all over the land" |

| Mission of Burma – Mica Lyrics

i agree that it's definitely a poem set to words, the interpretation michael azerrad gave in "our band could be your life" always made the most sense to me, which is basically that clint wrote this while in rehab for his alcoholism, which explains all the sterile hospital imagery as well as the "icy wet white sheets" (withdrawals). as for the "chorus", about being a ball of mica inside a rock, as well as the following "there will be no whistles, no radios" as speaking to the isolated, insular environment and experience he was going through, cut off from the rest of the world. |

the original song was actually off of syd barrett's solo album, the madcap laughs. also, the lyrics are from a james joyce poem, although i can't remember what it was called originally.
i just love how it's only really a cover for the first minute or two, and then changes into a completely different and utterly beautiful slowdive song for the rest. |

i can't believe no one's commented on this song yet. by far my favorite nico song.
by gut reaction is to say it's about jim morrison's suicide, but in a way that could be said about most songs on the end, so who knows. |

on the commentary for one of the episodes the creators talk about it, and will mcrobb (i think?) says he was told that line and sworn to secrecy, but that it was utterly absurd. and i just saw the video of him playing it live on mezzotint (http://www.mezzotint.com/video/) and i think he purposely slurs through it and giggles everytime, plus he pretty clearly says "does your dog bite" in the chorus. which is to say the dog version of the lyrics are probably correct and shimba doesnt mean anything at all. it could be he had originally written the song to be about the shootings but had to change it for the show, like he does with the "every drop of sex line" in summerbaby. cause on that same live video it sounds like the second verse is the "four feet away" thing written at the top.
of course it could also just be one of the great mysteries of humankind. |

i've never heard this one (does anyone know what album it's from?) but i love the lyrics anyway. judging from the omega in the title and the "and i am leaving you, and i am sorry" that this is the penultimate song of the alpha couple saga, maybe the night before the events of "alpha omega" |

far and away my favorite mountain goats song. a prime example of darnielle's knack for turning mundane details into heartbreaking art. |

actually i think the literal end of the alpha couple is alpha omega, when she's actually finally left. this is one of at least two or three "great last gasp" kind of song in the alpha story, where they start to resign themselves to their fate. i think, anyway. i'm not darnielle. |

the meaning i always got was that this was about getting a blow job from a whore, although it could also have something to do with kurt's awkward feelings on sex. |

Well, in a less literal way, i always saw the album (spirit they've gone spirit they've vanished) as a sort of concept album about childhood and the loss of innocence.
so the song to me is sort of like the moment that innocence is lost. it's kinda abstract and i dont know how to really explain it, but it makes sense to me |

i think it's just about being middle aged and realising things fade and end and you have to go on doing what you always do anyways.

i do love this song, though. |

beautiful. as for the song, well...it's about the leader of the cognoscenti, or at least a self titled one. king of the hipsters. drink the long draught for the hip priest. |

i'm pretty sure the line is "and it's six...and it's eight...time" which is anal of me, i know, but only cause it actually means something: the song is done in 6/8 time. |

are those completely accurate according to avey? i always though it was \"i\'ve been livin on plants and simple treasures\"
as for the meaning, well...if it could be expressed in plain english on a comment box, avey wouldn\'t have needed to write a song about it. |

| Pavement – Rattled By The Rush Lyrics

actually, you know in the perfect sound forever book (or melody maker if you happened to read that issue) he says (in his aloof, oblique, sarcastic sort of way) that it's about marriage? i'm inclined to agree. the whole minister part is obvious, and then at the beginning i think he's talking about getting ready for the ceremony, tucking in his shirt and seeing his dad cry. More specifically, i think it's about being rushed into a marriage and then realising on the wedding day that you're making a huge mistake.
i think the gushers, chained and perfumed are the bridesmades. As for the rest, well, SM's pretty impressonistic. some of it probably only makes sense to him.
it's worth mentioning that to this day he still isnt married. |
