So Stark (You're a Skyscraper) Lyrics
I've been waitin' here for oh so long
I've been waitin' here for oh so long
This is life
And it's flat
And it's 6
And it's 8...time
This is life
And it's flat
And it's 3
And it's 4
She's a real debutante
She'll never fall
Waves in the taxi of room-service calls
I've been with viceroys
And I've been with kings
In your emporium
It's gold inlaid rings
She can't live
Beside the spiral staircase
When the money's coming in...
White jar left of shelf above blue chair
Leave the old rugs down behind the stairs
Stunning bureaucrat
You're so f***ing lost
Stark as a skyscraper
Letters embossed
Stunning bureaucrat
You're so f***ing lost
Signing the letters
And cutting the costs
I can't live
Beside the spiral staircase
When the money's coming in...
Da - da - da
Ba - da - da
La - da - da
La - da - da
(etc...fades)
I've been waitin' here for oh so long
And it's flat
And it's 6
And it's 8...time
And it's flat
And it's 3
And it's 4
She'll never fall
Waves in the taxi of room-service calls
And I've been with kings
In your emporium
It's gold inlaid rings
Beside the spiral staircase
When the money's coming in...
Leave the old rugs down behind the stairs
You're so f***ing lost
Stark as a skyscraper
Letters embossed

Perhaps my favorite song title ever. What an unlikely title for a rock song.
i'm pretty sure the line is "and it's six...and it's eight...time" which is anal of me, i know, but only cause it actually means something: the song is done in 6/8 time.
Does the spiral staricase refer to spiral stairs, the guitarist?
and if so, would he take offense? "I can't live beside [Scott] [yell yell screech]"
and if so, would he take offense? "I can't live beside [Scott] [yell yell screech]"
I have no idea how I never made the spiral stairs connection. I will hit myself.
I think it might be about a girl who has humble begins but blossoms (she's a real debutante) into a social-ladder climbing golddigger but then finds that her life of luxury leaves her bored and empty,
i thought it was 'waits in the taxi while room service calls'. but a great little song. the bass is really prominent and with the lyrics gives it a slightly dark undercurrent. saw them play it a couple of times live and it works in that forum too.
One of my favorite Pavement songs. Would be on "best of" x2 (x3?) LP.
I always thought it was "waits in the taxi if room service calls"
My take on the song is a woman climbs the social ladder to find herself as a trophy wife, another possession of her husband. Put up on the shelf in a jar, or behind the spiral stairs with the old rugs. She's reached the top of the social ladder, and she's a skyscraper. But now what? She's just there, being, existing, not moving, not changing, rigid, immovable, accustomed to her lifestyle, stark. So stark.
