two quick notes
"And if I dried his feet with my dirty hair
Would he make me clean again?"
I get the image of kneeling down and praying, asking for forgiveness. Basic Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation that if you go with sincerity, your sins will be forgiven but some see this as a "get out of jail free card" to not take responsiblity for their actions and that god will always forgive me. (i was there once)
and the truth line
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. this is from the Buddha
i interpret it more as think for yourself but that line really could go about 10000 different ways. Psychological Egoism, Normative Subjective Relativism, a lot of eastern spiritual stuff. if we interpret truth subjectively, that runs the risk of creating some large large egos. alright that wasn't quick but hopefully insightful. later dudes |

drummers angel - tuggingarhythm never claimed to be perfect, he (assuming he) simply said that he felt that conflicts and differences could be resolved without the use of violence. violence is more of an animal instinct (which of course we all are) but we also have this thing called reason, free will, a conscious, you know what seperates us from the rest of nature. i like this song as well as the album. simply stating that we are all one human race, why do we have to have such hate |

i'm not sure if it is intentioned, but i have noticed repeated buddhist teachings and ideals being presented in apc and tool. buddhism teaches that the purpose to our life is to be happy. this song relates because we mix pleasure with happiness. we constantly fill this need this yearning with temporary joys and pleasures (drugs, sex, so on so forth) that will not last and just carve out ourselves even more.
also just an observation, there are a lot of very personal comments on this site. i find that interesting because we tell stories and our feelings to random screen names that we wouldn't tell our best friends. i'm guilty too. just sort of hide behind our clever names... whatever peace and love |

so is thursday simply saying, do something that makes you happy where you won't lose your identity or don't get a 40 hr week job that controls your life, because i think it would be quite difficult to survive in america without some steady income. sort of henry david thoreau stuff coming out, don't get me wrong, thursday is my favorite current band, but we all can't write the best songs in the world and travel it playing them. growing up in suburbia hell with parents pushing this exact lifestyle described in the lyrics makes me want to become a hermit |

if this song is a lovesong to our nation, i think you can view it a number of ways. on one hand it could be about the notion of 'manifest destiny' and how america feels that it is our duty to fix the world alone no matter the cost. also it could be about how america is suppossed to be great and the promised land but geoff doesn't see it that way because everything we have has been built on blood and oppression and hate. well maybe not everything but still... so yeah you could see it on the level of gays and blacks but i think it is more broad than that and those aspects just compose the greater whole. it is time to live for the ideals america professes and create the promise land, a brotherhood of man (john lennon comes out in me sometimes) |

i don't think geoff would make a sweeping generalization about all catholic priests like you are asserting blacktaxi. i am/was raised a catholic and still am (altough have been exploring other faiths at the current moment like buddhism) and have never witnessed anything but compassion, happiness, and the best intentions from all priest i have encountered. they are trying to make this world a better place but just like everything else, a few fuck ups give the whole thing a bad reputation. this song is about the loss of innocence and growing up, coming into your own and begining to question everything you've been told. at least that is what it speaks to me. i saw them in chicago and geoff said this was the most personal song he's ever written. |

i was raised a catholic and now am a philosophy and religious studies major in college and have found myself really questioning my faith. i've always had a problem and been upset with people that follow blindly and don't ever question what they are being told. i think this song along with sugar in the sacrament sort of deal with this concept of people putting all their faith and hope in a prayer and never doing anything about it. it seems that all religions have the same ideals and goals but are so very very far from achieving them or practicing them. maybe i'll become a buddhist... |

I saw thursday in chicago a few weeks ago and geoff said that this song was inspired from a plane flight to australia when they were touring with The Mars Volta. like the above comment he said the plane tipped to one side and it just made him think about how precious and short life is and this song describes his feelings when he got off the plane and was safe with his feet on the ground, being thankful for being alive. |

wow, i just read through every post and discovered i just wasted 10 minutes of my life. let's try to be somewhat understanding here. i agree right when i heard this song it didn't blow me back like i was expecting but as i listened more and read the story it grew on me. i think we can all relate to the feeling of wanting to leave something, in this case a city, behind but we just can't. what are we waiting for? growing up in suburbia hell i appreciate it. can't wait for the new cd |

i am a catholic but can relate to just about everything that has been said here. i question my faith everyday because if i didn't, i wouldn't be living it. i believe in the ideals of catholicism but it's history hasn't always stuck to them. i feel that catholicism is good natured and has the best intentions. some idiots take it the wrong way, take the bible literally, kill in the name of God just like islams. that doesn't mean that islam is a war mongering religion. they both have extremeists who are retarded. i feel that jesus embodied everything we should all strive to be, compassionate, giving, forgiving, and questioning of authority. i like nin and this song is okay, it makes me question my faith even more which in turn makes my faith stronger. rid your notions of the evil catholic. most of us mean well and care for the world |

just another thought - i know the song was made before this war - but - position the stitches like miles of torpedos the government trys to show us that the war is helping the iraqi people with democracy and what not, we are healing with our bombs, permission was hinted longs that hollered in a sleeper hold - bush saying that we have permission from the people when really they are being silenced. could work for any war really, whatever rock on |

this was the second song i heard from atd-i (i discovered them too late). first was quarantined. today it is my favorite song. i have seizures every time i hear it. i love the band because you can have a meaning all your own to a song and someone else can have a completely different one and you are both right. i agree with lakeshore, one more please! |

i have a friend similar to julio. he is brilliant and always living everything to the extreme but i think it is pushing him to the edge. i've always been jealous of his strength and everything because he is so original, i'm still at the intersection while he is on the messa street exit. so true. he is also a very misunderstood kid so the title fits nicely. i would sell my soul to see atd-i in concert. my favorite band. i've never seen them in concert. |

Okay well, let's talk about the song for a change... My take on it is that the speaker is in a struggle between a decision. Taking it further, the songs seems to say that he (or they) knows the final consequence is enevitable but he can't give in. He must do what he knows or thinks is right and rely on himself for strength. 'Ideas left unmentioned' could mean that people don't consider differing possibilities. Or maybe he had confidence up til the end ('up til the end it seemed so bright') who knows, that's my take. Looking forward to new stuff from TMV and Sparta. It's not our place to figure out why ATD-I broke up, embrace the beautiful creations that came from ATD-I's ashes. Peace |
