Brave Saint Saturn – Starling Lyrics 17 years ago
Here 'tis folks, the official meaning, from an interview with Reese by JFH:

These two things actually happened to me when I was a kid, about two years apart: I found a dying starling in our yard and unsuccessfully tried to save it, when I was ten. When I was twelve, a friend and I were shooting cans with my dad's BB gun from our porch. We got bored and started shooting birds, but only pumping it one or two times so it would barely graze them. But the gun had a slow air leak, so we kept pumping it while we waited. I made this incredible shot, where I followed a starling flying into a dryer vent in the apartment building I lived in, but because we had pumped it so many times, I actually killed the bird. Not only that, but in doing so, I later realized that I had killed all of the baby birds it was trying to feed in its nest. It was devastating to me as a twelve year old, because I had never thought through what I was doing, the fact that we could be hurting birds, or that we might actually kill one. I remember that I spent the next four days trying to climb up to that vent so that I could save the baby birds. For the first few days, I could hear them crying out for their mother, but that slowly became weaker over time, until the fourth day, when it stopped. I broke down into tears on the second day and decided to tell my dad, whose response was that I should try to save them myself, reasoning that it was I who had caused the problem in the first place. By the third day, he tried to help me by boosting me up to the vent, but I couldn't reach in because it was partially obscured by a screen. Because we lived in an apartment, we didn't have a ladder, or even know anyone who did. It was a very hard lesson to learn.

I think that my views on life, and the sacredness of life come from experiences such as this. I feel like we, as humans, can only take life, but can never really give it. If Scriptures tell us that God cares about each and every sparrow that falls, in light of these experiences, I wanted to say something about us as the Church being concerned with saving and respecting all life. I just wanted to make a statement about life being sacred and special. Not just the lives of animals, but babies, and criminals, and our enemies. If we are to interpret Scripture by the actions and life of Jesus Christ and His disciples, then we should be conscious of the value of life. I know that this will upset a lot of people, because the issues of gun control, abortion, and capitol punishment have become highly politicized, so I would just like to address that by saying that we should see the world through the eyes of Christ, and not through the eyes of whatever political party we feel supports or opposes these heavy issues that we have already made up our minds about. All life is sacred and we are called as humankind to be stewards over it. I think God leaves it up to us to figure out what that means, and to what extent we believe that. Not to say that hunting is wrong, because I think it can be done respectfully, and with care for the world and God's creation. I just wanted this song to paint a picture of our burden as Christians for stewardship over the earth. It is a call to be merciful to those who have wronged us, and especially to take care of those who cannot help themselves - both people and animals.

The Classic Crime – The Beginning (A Simple Seed) Lyrics 17 years ago
I always thought this song was blatantly obvious, but was always confused by the last line. DanJackieChan, after reading your comment, it finally makes sense to me...even though I don't quite agree with your summary of the lyrics.

The bulk of the song is about being on tour and missing his wife and his home town. That's pretty straightforward. But the important part is just how much he misses home.

But the bridge goes in a different direction. He thinks of the seed of truth that has been planted inside of him, and all that he can do with his life by doing what he does out on tour, the difference he hopes to make in people's lives. This is where the "if my whole life was wrapped and priced...what the tag would show" bit comes in.

The last line is where he realises, as DanJackieChan said, what his life really is all about. Being close to the "holy ghost". And no matter how much he has missed his wife, he can "let her go" when he's close to the holy ghost. I was confused at first because I thought he was referring to the holy ghost as the "her"...but he's contrasting the two.

Matt makes us appreciate his relationship with the holy ghost by explaining how much he loves his wife and misses home, but then showing that his spiritual relationship tops all that. It's beautiful.

All IMHO

Matt's writing isn't brilliant at first glance, but they more you get into it, the more you appreciate.

Relient K – The Scene And Herd Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the above people are close, but not quite the full explanation. Allow me to ramble.

I think this song is more about the lameness of the current Christian music "scene" and the "herd" (notice the reference to mindless, enslaved cattle) of kids who follow it.

For me, this illumination came from the very last line - "The scene and herd, block out the sun like a flock of birds". I don't think "sun" is necessarily the only rendering of that word - I think it also means "Son" - yes, religion haters, I mean as in Jesus. That line describes what a flock of birds do when they all group together and get in the way of the true source of light. Notice birds don't fly towards the sun...they fly "alongside" it (from a ground perspective). This also describes what happens when Christian music "sceners" all get together in a "herd" - they are into the music but when they flock together, they just act like cattle not really following anybody but distracting one another from the reason the music's there in the first place. They don't just not fly towards the Son, they block him out for other nearby people who want to enjoy him.

What I'm trying to say is that I think Matt is trying to say that people into the "Christian music scene" should stop acting like typical music "scene" kids. By just flocking around the music and teetering on the edge of faith, everyone distracts one another and makes everything a "little bit worse". They tarnish what Matt & the guys are truly there for - enjoying the Son. While it "bothers" him, at the end of the day, Matt doesn't mind though, because he's "having a good time".

I think the references to "selling out" and "I'll decline" are mentioned because they're on the brink of this kind of "scene attitude" - stuff that could affect them if they were part of the "herd", but they're trying not to.

And I agree with chowderhead - the bridge is an apology for having a go at people like this.

The above descriptions do make a lot of sense...this is just what jumped out at me most of all from the song.

All IMHO.

The Classic Crime – Who Needs Air Lyrics 18 years ago
To solve the debate: I asked Matt and he said that he originally wrote this song as a God song, not a girl song. So yeah, as jujube111, it must be FOR his wife, not ABOUT his wife. But Matt writes lyrics with the hope that people will interpret them in their own way and find their own meaning. He leaves his lyrics such that they can be interpreted multiple ways.

The Rocket Summer – A Song Is Not A Business Plan Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, so it's pretty obvious what most of the song is about, and it's great that he said it. But what is this bit all about:

"We broke down on the side of the road
East coast, we had to cancel the shows
I'm trying as hard as I can
But I'd rather write a song than a business plan"

...?? Clearly it has to tie in with the theme somehow, but how?

As Cities Burn – Empire Lyrics 18 years ago
well_then, I don't get that sense at all. To me, it's saying nothing about the home he was born into, just that he had two brothers that were always rebellious and naughty, so he felt that since he was good, he deserved his parents love. But while he acted good, he had a bad side ("vultures bite"), but he hid it well to appear being good.

Cody is paralleling this with us receiving God's love. We might think that we're more deserving of God's love than others because we try and be good, but underneath all the layers we try to hide under, we all have vulture bites - we all have proud, sinful hearts. In the end, he's saying, if we claim to be good, we're really claiming that we have no need for Jesus' "redeeming blood". We act phariseeical, thinking we don't need grace, but when we compare our good deeds against God's love, we realise it's nothing. In the end, he realises what he is: "I was a wicked one".

I kind of agree with you about the chorus. Jesus makes us glorious via forgiveness. But the last line, "worthy of hearts at our feet", talks to me of us only being worthy of humbling ourselves before God when we compare ourselves to his perfect glory, a glory requiring no forgiveness or grace, because he is the source of the glory itself. The last lines of the second chorus confirm this - we are not glorious "from one thing we have done, but from being the least". Being the least = humbling ourselves.

"My heaven tower sways atop their fleeting praise" - ACB often make references to building a tower to heaven (see "Love Jealous One, Love") referencing the Tower Of Babel. They use this as a metaphor for being proud of your own works, and trying to gain glory for oneself via being good to garner the praises of others. However, in the end, he is only the creation - the glory belongs to the creator who makes him everything he is and gives him the gifts that make him look "good" in the first place.

Overall, its a plea for humility. We need to realise nothing that we ever do is "good", in comparison to God it's worthless ("show us we are [poor]"). We need to recognise this, and fall down at God's feet in repentance.

Anberlin – A Whisper and a Clamor Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about joy amongst the brothers & sisters of Christ ("clap your hands all ye children"). It seems a rebuttal to all the Christians who listen to his lyrics and think they don't talk about God, so they're not Christians ("Grow tired of writing songs, where people listen but never really hear what's going on") and telling them that its coming from his heart, so it's all good ("tell me what's so wrong now") and they should rejoice as fellow Christians.

Seems to also be a rebuttal to those who say they should be using their opportunities as a band to preach. They're saying being a Christian is not about how many people you convert ("It's not the lives that you save..."), but how you live your life, and what your actions will say in your defence on judgement day ("...but what the silence will scream").

This might be a stretch, but it seems to be also saying that Stephen's writing is a way for him to explore who he is, and it's theraputic for him ("For most of men believe hell is never knowing who they are now") - this idea is backed up from the way he described his writing process on the Cities DVD.

But I still don't understand the title.

Anberlin – (*Fin) Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, I think this should clear up the meanings to some degree...from the horse's mouth (interview with Stephen from Anberlin, from www.hollywoodjesus.com).

------------------
HJ: Word choice seems really important to the band. I've taken a stab at the 'meanings' of a bunch of your songs in [my review] but "Fin" seems so compact and full, there's just a lot going on. Shed some light on that song. It seems personal, complete with names, [is it] an actual event? Help listeners (as "Whisper and A Clamor" is certainly a wake-up call) see what's behind the words of "Fin" and maybe other songs.

Stephen: “Fin” (pronounced like the fin on a shark’s back) means ending in French. I felt like this was a conclusion (or just a start) to my epic tug-of-war with God. I have a lot of questions, a lot that I may never really understand or have the capacity to comprehend in this lifetime. “Fin” is a series of four stories, that all tie together in the line ‘patron saint of lost causes.’ The first story is a personal memoir about my life as a child and the pull on my soul even then. I deliberated even at eight years old, that it would be better that God and the devil would just both leave me alone. The second story is about a couple from my early teen years’ church who cried for a miracle. It was a promised miracle, and it never came about. That leaves an impression. The third is about a mentor that used the guise of 'missions work' to leave his family in shambles and eventually decay. That plays with your salvation, when one experiences it. [The fourth story is about] Billy, a traveling ' healer' who crippled my life and growth right in front of me. All these things and many, many others made me lose my salvation. But later in life I realized I needed to stop looking at Christians to see Christ. I wrestled with God, and he won.
----------------

The next question is though - Stephen references four stories, but there's only 3 verses. Where do each of the stories fit in? "Billy" is obvious, but the others aren't so clear. And where do the "hidden lyrics" from the end fit it?

They're not a "religious band" - they are a band that make music and the members of the band happen to be Christians. Therefore, they naturally write songs which have spiritual themes. Listen to "I'll Forever Sing" and "The Modern March" from the CD, for example.

As Cities Burn – Love Jealous One, Love Lyrics 19 years ago
sokhangpan is on the right track - more specifically, I think it's about pride.

Good comment by thechungdynasty about the Tower Of Babel. People wanted to be build a tower to make themselves equal with God - classic pride. The disciples asking Jesus "teacher, which of us will be the greatest" - thinking about how great they would be rather than how they could serve. "glory has not a place near my hands or any man" - saying that though he may be proud and think he's great, he and no man should get the glory that God alone deserves. And "my reputation is what I am on the scale in the eyes of mankind" is another classic admission of pride, trying to look good in front of others.

The writer is urging himself to be compassionate and loving instead of focusing on what others think of him and coveting glory for himself.

As Cities Burn – Thus From My Lips, By Yours, My Sin Is Purged Lyrics 19 years ago
onelastgoodbye, I personally don't think the last line is supposed to be meaning Christ as our bride. Scripture has it the other way around - us being Christ's bride.

If the idea that the struggle with sin is specifically about lust is correct, then I think it is the singer talking to his wife in the "Bride..." line. Seems like he's saying sorry to her for this terrible thing he struggles with, admitting he'd be nothing without God's forgiveness. Could be wrong, but that just makes more sense to me.

Great song, great band.

Relient K – Must Have Done Something Right Lyrics 19 years ago
Firstly, it's "racking" my brain, not "wreckin".

Pretty simple. Its about a girl. Theissen's in lurve, and he feels he "must have done something right" to deserve her.

This is from a piece written about the upcoming album:
“I always write about what I’m going through and I can’t avoid the fact that I’m just really happy and there are some good things going on,” says lead singer/guitarist/pianist Matt Thiessen. This happy state of mind lights up the exuberant first single “Must Have Done Something Right.” "This song represents something that I've wanted to create for a long time,” he explains. “It’s not a political commentary or a tear jerking emotion-piece, it’s just a feel good, fun song. Written at 3 a.m. with a smirk on my face, the song turned out to be something that you can tap your foot and smile to.”

Mae – Cover Me Lyrics 19 years ago
The comment about this song being about asking for God's forgiveness and it being after "Mistakes We Knew We Were Making" kinda makes sense of the line "The list goes on and on..." at the end of M.W.K.W.W.M. This song is asking for forgiveness for that "mistake" as well as the ongoing list of things he has done and does do wrong. That line does not seem to fit with the rest of the lyrics of M.W.K.W.W.M otherwise, IMO.

Anathallo – To Gary and Marcus: The Sovereignty of God Is Omnipresent Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok, I was just reading the lyrics of this song again and I have a theory. It could be totally wrong, so feel free to correct me, but when I thought of this the whole song seemed to make sense all of a sudden.

Its a story about losing unborn children mid-pregnancy. The author (is he married? maybe its written on behalf of someone else...anyway) and partner fall pregnant twice, and have lost both of them...but they were to be named Gary and Marcus. I think its more than one person that is lost, because of the 2 people in the title and because he says he sees "beautiful faces" not "a beautiful face". I think its a child because of "to plead before you for this child", and he refers to "your toothpick ribcage", I think indicating that the subject is very small.

The reason I think they are unborn is the last bit. Christians (myself included) often wonder about the eternal fate of children who die without ever being of the mental capacity to make a conscious choice for or against Jesus. It is believed, based on hints of scripture, that in this case the destiny of the child comes under the faith of the parents. The last line is saying about the grace he has received & knows abounding to those who are "so far away".

Anyway, that's my suggested possible meaning.

The "old man" is the old, sinful, worldly self inside each of us that we are trying to push out. bought_in_blood is right, this song shows in a violent manner how we should react to our sinful nature. It personifies the old self inside us and then chops off it's head, makes it bleed. Great stuff.

David Crowder Band – A Beautiful Collision Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok...it's definitely not about romance! Read the album notes:

”For the past two years, I have ended most nights in concert with the following statement: ‘When our depravity meets His divinity, it is a beautiful collision.’ This recording is about that collision”

This title track is about that collision. God comes and meets us at the lowest points of our depravity, and inexplicably infuses his divinity into us - we are still human, but we have the eternal God living inside us. The song describes the theological and emotional confusion that springs from this amazing truth.

Best song on the new album.

David Crowder Band – Turkish Delight Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, clearly about Narnia. But while Narnia is a great story, it is very cool because of the big analogy behind it all. And I reckon its the same with this song. Crowder isnt just singing about Turkish Delight because it's fun, he's singing about Turkish Delight because of its analogy in the story to sin and temptation.

The lyrics focus on the fact that he fell for the very tempting T.D. even though he didnt want to. He finds himself in inner conflict, being willing to do anything 'for that tiny bit of pie', but realising that its a bad thing - 'A life of treats might do me in / But I gotta get another taste'. Its all about the conflict within ourselves and our sinful nature - read Romans chapter 7.

And all meaning aside...this is a very funky song!

Cool Hand Luke – Skydive Lyrics 20 years ago
Seems pretty clearly to be about someone wanting to commit suicide. He can't seem to acheive what he hopes for, he keeps getting hurt by people, and can't get answers to his questions. So he's jumping off a skyscraper to escape it all.

What seems a bit odd to me is that the writer seems to be putting this in a positive light. Its as if the writer is pleading to God to "catch" this jumping person because he's doing it for good reasons, if that makes sense - he's doing it because he feels he "doesnt have anything to offer you", and because his good hopes and dreams are being "deferred". It doesnt seem like a sad song, given the topic. Anyway, that's just the impression I get.

Five Iron Frenzy – Something Like Laughter Lyrics 20 years ago
This song was written by Leanor, and it's awesome.

Bits of this sorta make sense to me, but I cant really explain all the lyrics. It seems to me that its talking about a girl that the writer knows. This girl is so bogged down in religion (sounds a bit like Catholocism), but yet she can see glimmers of truth through it all, and longs for something real. She's been hurt in her life, and really just needs to fathom grace and come to an understanding of the real, perfectly loving relationship that only Jesus can offer.

She holds onto the hurts in her life ("she's always angry"..."Clutching pity like a prize"), and blames God for the way things are ("He cares so much for sparrows / Wont he toss something out my way?"), but still she knows there is something real that she is seeking ("Searching for more...seek the light"). The writer longs for God to reveal himself to her ("Create in her a sense of awe that sees your beauty").

Oh, just had a thought about the "something like laughter" part (the end of the second chorus). I think the rain is supposed to symbolise the troubles of life falling on this girl...and in her case, falling like laughter, because life has been so harsh to her that it all seems like a cruel joke.

Just my thoughts.

Switchfoot – Daisy Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it is not referring to a person, but Daisy as in the flower - it seems to fit with the other references to the rain and the sunshine. The daisy/rain/sunshine seems to be an analogy for God and us. We are the Daisies, rooted in the ground (the world) but longing to "let go" and fly away, knowing that the ground "doesnt hold your interest, doesnt hold your soul". The rain and sunshine are the trials of life, the good and the bad coming from above. "Whos to take the blame for all redemptive motion and every rainy day?" - the same good God is behind it all.

It seems like another beautiful Switchfoot reminder to stay strong, weather the storms of life, put your hope where it belongs, and dont hold on too tight to this fallen world in which we live.

Thats what it seemed like to me, anyway.

Brave Saint Saturn – I Fell Away Lyrics 20 years ago
The last lines are so beautiful..."you lift my battered soul, you mend my broken bones together"...one of those lyrics that is so much more powerful because of the way it is sung. First a whisper, then sung, then a heartfelt cry. Awesome.

The song is an abstract look at a Christian falling from grace. He is frustrated at himself for another mistake, and he worries about what others will think and say. Most of all he is sorry to God for his failings. But in the bridge, he realises that no matter how far he falls, God can mend him and lift him up again.

I still dont get what the metaphor of "trying to touch the sun" means though. I know it has to do with Icarus ("trailing wings of melted wax"), but I dont know what it's supposed to mean.

Brave Saint Saturn – Titan Lyrics 20 years ago
It's about sin. The "darkness inside", his sinful nature, is destroying him, bringing him down, keeping him from the light, and eating him away like a cancer.

He doesnt explain much in the way of how this practically affects him, but its kind of a look at the spiritual warfare going on over our souls. This is evident in reference to the spiritual realm in "behind what I know and see" and constant use of "light" and "darkness".

Good song.

It seems to be more about outreach. Everyone's "preaching the candy coated goo" and busy being all phariseeical about rules & regulations, and no-one's actually fulfilling Jesus' command to go out and make disciples of all nations.

"the choir's so used to the preaching anyhow" - go out, make a stand for the true, unchanging gospel of Jesus Christ! Roper – In Excelsis Deo Lyrics 20 years ago
Its about someone struggling to break free from their own, sinful self and trying to become the person they want to be - someone pleasing to God.

The first verse talks about his struggles with his flesh - his "wooden soul" being fundamentally opposed to God's working, and not being able to get out of the "places it has fallen" - sinful, selfish habits and lifestyle. But he realises that even through this, God still loves him - "And now your mercy lights up my dark eyes".

The second verse talks about his progress - he is getting over his old self, and his "knotted trunk is straightening" - he's getting on top of his struggles with the flesh. But he realises he is not quite there yet - still waiting for "If this world will ever release me", and knows he has to be patient for it. He knows he is still not perfect, even after all this time - but no matter what, he is still the "the object of [God's] affection".

I love the chorus most of all. So simple - "the sun will shine on winter snow". No matter how cold hearted, how dark and lost we are, God's light will forever shine on us. He will be continually melting us away, refining us, until he eventually makes us like him.

natethegreat got it right. Its about God's love - unconditional on what we do, forever constant, never failing. Always working on our hearts, refining us as long as we let him, but loving us no matter where we are at.

Beautiful song.

Roper – Amplify Lyrics 20 years ago
More specifically, I think this song is about amplifying and glorifying God through music. Reese is exploring how, through all the details of performing a show (verses 1 & 2), his main purpose in his music is to amplify JC. In the prechorus, chorus and bridge Reese makes it clear that that is what he sees as the purpose of his existence, so naturally it is that message, not the music itself, that he wants to amplify.

Anathallo – But Without Love Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is about a Christian friend of the author's. This person appears to have a lot of head knowledge and can discern truth quite well, but lacks the crucial ingredient of love in the way that they live it out. It seems that there is no love in the way this person conveys the truth to others, or the way they act on it. The author, however, knows that without love, he is nothing - no amount of faith or knowledge can replace the crucial point of our existence - to love God, be loved by him, and love others with that same love.

I think it sounds like this person is a pastor or a parent or something - "It's hard for me to honor the things that you say" indicates that it is someone he should be respecting. Perhaps someone who has had some theological training ("I'm amazed by the depths of your reason") but has lost perspective a bit.

Awesome band. Super deep lyrics and original music - and thats a beautifully rare thing!

Relient K – Apathetic Way to Be Lyrics 20 years ago
I think its talking about multiple aspects of apathy. But its all the Christian talking to his

non-Christian friends.

They think he is apathetic (and laughable) because he doesnt care about the temporal things of

this world ("The things that matter to you they don't matter to me"). He doesnt care about

relationships like they do ("Emotional attatchment is really not a threat/When I am simply not

concerned"). And he doesnt care about material stuff ("Cause I know no one will ever be

content/With the way things are or with what they've got").

Meanwhile he is thinking they are apathetic (and sad) that they dont care about God ("The reality/That the end will be/The end of things/Our hearts are all we get to bring/So let's go ahead and make them worth something"). But it seems like he is angry with himself for not caring enough that they dont care about God...if that makes sense. He realises that their apathy has them hell-bound, but isnt taking that to heart as much as he should and isnt doing enough about it. Someone must have challenged him on that ("I must admit that all the words you spoke, I hated/Cause I don't see how I can be motivated/Enough to break a sweat over this dying race").

I think these two aspects he touches on explain the chorus. "And the half of me/Is all about apathy" - he doesnt care about the stuff of this world (which is good). However; "And the other half/Just doesn't care" - he doesnt care about the fact that other people are hell-bound. He's saying apathy is good in some aspects, but bad in others.

In the end, hes challenging us to look at ourselves and work out where we sit in it all. "I'm well aware that everything is a far cry from alright" - lets make sure we care about the dying world around us. "I'm well aware that all of us can at times be too uptight" - but lets not care so much about the world that we love it. "And possibly the remedy is a dose of apathy/You point your finger at you, and I'll point mine right back at me" - work out for yourself who you are in this story.

That's my take, anyway. I'll stop blabbing now.
