David Crowder Band – Everything Glorious Lyrics 18 years ago
"You make everything glorious, and I am Yours.
What does that make me?"

That is probably one of the best lines ever written, because it takes a thought SO hard for most Christians to grasp, and makes it plain and simple.

God has the power and love to turn all things into something beautiful,
including you.

Living in his light, covered in his blood, you are no longer a sinner in his eyes.
You are a beloved child.

You. Are. Glorious.

And there is nothing you can do that will make God love you anymore or any less than he already does.

The Weakerthans – Past-Due Lyrics 18 years ago
obituaries and obituary photographs.

this song is kind of broken up weird as far as the vocal phrasing. The ends of phrases are really beginnings of new sentences.
(i like it.)
If it were and essay, it would look more like this:

"February always finds you folding local papers open to the faces passed away to wonder what they're holding in those hands.
Were never shown the places formal photographs refuse to mention: his tiny feet ,that birthmark on her knee.
The tyranny of framing our attention with all the eyes their eyes no longer see."

etc.

I always thought the pictures in the obituaries were a little bit off.
It's always just a head-shot, and that little photograph and paragraph written about who lived longer and who didn't and where to go see the dead body doesn't do justice to the beauty and complexity of every human life.

But, it really can't be debated how unbelievably poignant the last lyrics are :

"Give what you can to keep to comfort this plain fear you can't exstinguish or dismiss."

i've always heard this song more in the perspective of a 'concerned onlooker'

"I see what's coming, and I hope it really does make you happy. Because I'd really miss what you're leaving behind."

'what you're leaving behind' could be anything, though.
and that's what makes this song perfect.

pretty witty.

i'm not really sure it's a bunch of narrorators... i think of it more as a bunch of thoughts running through one person's mind.
(but that's pretty much the same thing.)

this song, to me, is about going and going and going and going, and all of the thoughts that come with it.

and how nothing really seems to matter until the end!
and how it was essentially designed that way.

this song isn't about some sort of big mess someone's gotten them self into.
it's about some mess that they were born into!

the monotonous life of 'success'
working and working and working, as if working is the only thing you are born to do.

there's so much more life to be lived,
and so much potential wrapped up inside of every single person.
and we have to work, we have to - but work CAN NOT be our lives.
it's a message to those who are living a mediocre, planned-out life with no spontaneity and no adventure!
it's a message to those who lie asleep :
wake up! WAKE UP!
look at what surrounds you, and look what is just a revelation away!
Wake up and come over here!!!

the light and sound all trapped up inside of this person is being wasted,
because they are working their life away for profits that they will only see a small portion of.

wake up, Wake Up, WAKE UP!!

David Crowder Band – All I Can Say Lyrics 19 years ago
Quite honestly, this song is about feeling alone.

It's too easy -in the middle of this great, vast world- to get 'lost' in it. It's too easy to feel tiny and insignificant.
And it's all too easy to feel like you're the only one. The only one that's following and loving the God that you remember changing your life.

But, you don't. feel changed anymore.

You just feel stuck and alone.
You feel like God's left you behind, somewhere.

And, eventually, you realize that God didn't leave you behind, at all. He's much closer than you could have imagined. And, he was there the entire time.

Offering God 'everything' is a common promise. It shouldn't be. People usually don't know what they're promising. They're just singing along at some church convention.
Offering God everything is not always a 'happy' thing. Often times, it's out of pain.

And that's what this song is, i think.
"I'm sick and I'm weak and I'm tired, and I know I'm not worth all that much, God - I know I need you. So, you can have all of me, however much it's worth - just. take it."

so, go, be happy. you don't have to worry about what you'll eat the next day - so don't worry!
and be grateful.
and BE KIND to those who do.

The Weakerthans – Wellington's Wednesday Lyrics 19 years ago
cobaltblue - i'm pretty sure they ended this song with the beginning of that song on purpose.

there's something that has to tie Wellington's and 'Temptation' by New Order together for the weakerthans.

... i do things like that in the songs i write.
because i only really play for my friends (and the occasional stranger... or a bunch of strangers when i play on the street) - i reference songs that mean something that we understand.
for example ' my generation ' by spoonboy.
it seems to be some sort of anthem for the people i love. strange, really.
but it makes sense.

uhh. i feel really ridiculous right now?

The Weakerthans – Time's Arrow Lyrics 19 years ago
sentences leading into sentences, strung together, intertwined
i'm in love with the way this song is strung together.
it's been said, but it can never be said enough - the weakerthans have a ridiculously and amazingly profound way to write songs.
honestly, i don't know of any other band that, in every song, somehow finds a way to pierce your heart and change your life.
somehow, they key in to the things that every human needs to be taught, and continually reminded.
and they're all so seemingly nostalgic. and personal. but universal.
no one else can do this.

Immediately, this song starts off with the end of another day - putting you in the frame of mind (if you catch it) so that you can realize that life is always slipping away…your life is always getting shorter.
And then - “A dream of how alone she was tomorrow” is so precious. Just another way to make you remember that your life is always getting shorter… that the fact that ‘there’s always a new day’ can be just as terrorizing as it is hopeful. We get stuck sometimes… stuck in a place, in a state of mind. We are the hollow men, and the stuffed men (thank you t.s. elliot) but we are also the stuck men.
“Tomorrow, when you keep all those promises to someone in a mirror you will find ……“ (that someone is you, of course.) Even promises we’ve made to ourselves place us in a rut. Life changes, fixing our mistakes and flaws --- it can become habit. Focusing on bettering yourself, keeping your self-made promises, will… make you ‘better,’ i guess… but there’s always a change that you’re attacking your very soul - what you’re supposed to be … maybe you’re removing from yourself something that someone needs you to be. Eh, all that’s pretty off the wall and not as connected to the song as … this:

Time moves on. And on. And on. Everything always continues.
you.can’t.make.it.stop.
And that makes it so easy to waste our days.
calendars and commas DO terrorize us…. Rules and time and continuation.

Doesn’t that make you want to live? right now…in the moment, when the past doesn’t matter and the future doesn’t matter? only right then and there.
That’s “turning around.”
Get unstuck!

the next ‘verse’ (that’s what it is, i guess) is beautifully composed.
While listening or reading or whatever - just think about how no matter what you do or where you’re doing it…. Time keeps moving.
The ticking of watches and the eternal continuation of ellipses (“…”) have trapped us… gently - without us even noticing.
and what’s so strange about it all is that humans created time, to some degree.
we don’t make the sun rise and set --- but we fill in the gaps with numbers. count the hours, days, and years.
we’ve trapped ourselves.
… our watches and ellipses will continue to gently pull us along.
We can’t escape.

But we can turn around!
Get unstuck!

The Weakerthans – Reconstruction Site Lyrics 19 years ago
sometimes people's comments on songs from "Reconstruction Site" show that they haven't listened to the entire cd... because, even though the songs can stand alone, they're extraordinary together.

considering that the cd is eventually building up to the death of someone. someone who knows they're going to die, soon enough.
(of course we all know we're going to die, but it's been made very real to this person)
the cd takes you through the journey of the feelings that one might feel if placed in the situation. it's all, like all weakerthans songs, very personal.
remembering and wishing and regretting and hoping and knowing you have to get on with it and be happy in the time you have left.
and it's also about the feelings anyone close to this person is feeling, watching their friend change only to die.

death is one of the most harrowing things to think about - but if anything has the power to change people, death does.
the significance it plays in Transcendentalism and Romanticism and human life is so dear to me.
Consider poems such as "Ulysses" and "In Memoriam" by Alfred Lord Tennyson and "And Thou art Dead, as Young and Fair" by Lord Byron.
AND! Reconstruction Site by the Weakerthans.

Death is something that ties all humans together - no matter what they believe, how they've lived/are living, what they aspire to be, what they hate or what they love. We all have death.
We will all one day die, we will all one day be returned to the earth in order to sustain it in the same way that it kept us alive.
And we'll all be afraid of death sometimes. and we'll all be sad because of death sometimes. and we'll all feel unmistakably alive because of death sometimes.

this song (this album) expresses that in such a beautiful and precious, thought-provoking, life-changing way.

The Weakerthans – The Prescience of Dawn Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the person speaking has obviously been forced to come to terms with the idea of death. It's not quite something they're comfortable with - but something they know is coming, sooner than they had ever planned.
... it's kind of like the 'you have three months to live' kind of things... but not quite that cliche or maybe not even that drastic.

Castanets – Dancing With Someone (Privilege of Everything) Lyrics 19 years ago
i like this song. because i can relate a lot to it.

because. uhmm.

"And I do not want to have no choices i n between me and any true rejoicing"
i really don't want to hold myself back from being truly happy. and i think i do that a lot. i kind of over complicate things. and then can't live outside of anything. and then i become kind of bitter.
and if i could just... live. simply. and just... be. sometimes. i think i'd be a much happier person.

and then he says... "get the hell out of Denton" and "forget this reckoning."
so... to me thats like starting over. which is something i'm really .. longing for right now.
new beginnings and new people. new experiences and... a new soul?

and i really like " alive truly in everyone"
because. uhm... i dont' know.
it might not really mean this...but it always reminds me of how important it is to look for yourself in other people.
in order to understand them. and help them.
and love them.
because you have a little more insight into why they do what they do. and how you might do the same thing.
even if it's stupid.
and you're just a more...merciful person that way.

and mercy is one of the most beautiful things in the world.
maybe the most beautiful.

and the whole beginning to me, is about leaving things behind.

which, a lot of times, means forgiving people and moving on.

and as far as the "i do not want to explain" thing.
it's kind of like... not dwelling on it.
you're forgiven, and i'm leaving all of this.
and i'm not going to tell you why --- because it would just dredge up old junk that's stupid and dumb and over.

and the imagery of dancing with someone .... dancing away from your past/"the battle"
... high on something. anything. even if it's just the idea of. finally getting away.

just... dancing away. into something completely new.

i think this song is getting a high from... freeing yourself.

she freed herself from school.
and she freed herself from a 'mean' man.

self-liberation, i guess.

do what you want becasue you want . because it feels right.

....gah. i agree about the production at the end though.. ehh.
it really does ruin it.

Modest Mouse – So Much Beauty in Dirt Lyrics 19 years ago
it seems like a lot of you believe that this song is about letting go and not really caring about anything. just living.

but, to me - it's more about. grabbing hold of what's around you and caring about everything.

everything is out there - thriving around us. and, too often, it's easy too overlook that. to become apathetic towards it. or maybe just so focused on ourselves (our own loves and hates and successes and mistakes) that we don't take the time to thrive along with everything that's thriving around us.

It's about doing things.. just because you want to enjoy things. doing things that are going to open your eyes and show you new things. doing things to help you appreciate.

"Walk a direction, see where we get"
"Get real drunk and ride our bikes"
"Climb up the fire escape do it 'til the ground looks far away"

i think the only reason money is mentioned in this song is because it seems to be sometihng we focus on, and when we focus on it - we're only unhappy. we only feel as if we're lacking.

when you appreciate the simple things around you (which aren't really simple at all.), you're happier. because you're satisfied. you feel whole - not empty (as you do with money)

so. i guess what he's said to me through this song is...
" the planets are spinning, the butterfly is flying, the clouds are floating, and the leaves are swaying. there's a building out there waiting for you to explore it, there's a hill waiting to be climbed. there's a little pond behind your best friends house waiting for you to swim in it, and there's a person out there waiting for you to kiss them. just. because."

there's so much to enjoy.
and no reason to overlook it anymore.

live.... THRIVE.

it's supposed to be...

Bright Eyes – Arc of Time (Time Code) Lyrics 20 years ago
"arc of time" is about finding the one thing in life that is worth depending on. .. or maybe the fact that nothing in life is worth depending on.

make sense? allow me to explain.....

TIME-

time is inaccurate. there was this experiment where they sent people really fast in airplanes and blah blah blah - they discovered that time was WRONG. it was inaccurate. but... we, as a society, depend on time. in society, time is looked at as a constant.. though, in reality, it is not completely accurate.
our lives revolve around time. everything we do is at a certain time. we plan around the clock. we depend our lives on something that is not dependable.

the second aspect of time recognized in the song is how we plan for the future,
though we plan what will happen later in life - we have no way of telling what will happen between then and now that will change our plans. you can make your plans, and believe they will happen .. but the future will always remain a mystery.

We are searching for something in life to depend on... for something to be constant. we thought we found it in time, but, in fact... time will not suffice.

He also suggests that people can try to find the constant in LOVE, MUSIC, and ACTION/MOVEMENT and DEATH.

RELIGION -

it's not clear whether conor is trying to promote or mock religion - but that's not important to the meaning of the song, anyway.
it's simply the presentation of an idea.
christians claim that God is THE constant.
that when everything else fails, (time, music, death, the future, the present, EVERYTHING) you will meet with god.. the only thing/person who stayed the same through everything.
you can choose to either look at the song one way or the other (that's the beauty of conor's writing.). conor can either be saying that there IS no constant in life and that there is nothing worth depending on ... or that god is the constant in life, and that he's the ONLY thing worth depending on.

Go back and read the first line of my comment. Make anymore sense?

---------------------------------------------------------

you guys keep calling conor a genius... but don't give him enough credit with your 'song-evalutations.'
this song is so much deeper, in my opinion, than you guys see.
conor is a genius. extremely bright. and has the ability to take the most complex things.. and make them simple. he is amazing. so.. look a little deeper into his songs?
