Otep – Menocide Lyrics 11 years ago
Dear god the butthurt in this thread!

As a certified, privileged, straight, white, cis-gendered, able-bodied male, and also a certified Social Justice Warrior(TM), I absolutely adore this song.

I do not, and I never will, begrudge the oppressed their rage. There is no such thing as "misandry", just as there's no such thing as "reverse racism", just as there's no such thing as "heterophobia", just as there's no such thing as "cisphobia".

When women, and people of color, and people on the LGBTQA spectrum hold the balance of power and straight, white, cis-gendered, able-bodied men are oppressed, then we can have serious discussions about "misandry", "reverse racism", "heterophobia", and "cisphobia".

But since that frankly isn't the case, you butthurt MRAs can shut up, thanks.

Let Otep rage. Her rage is real. It is *justified*. And I support it.

Yup, you read that right.

I won't go around killing anybody, but I support rage when that rage is justified. And the rage of the oppressed is ALWAYS justified.

David Gilmour – This Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
From Newsday, published March 30, 2006: "I'm an atheist, and I don't have any belief in an afterlife..."

"The theme of the new album - those Pink Floyd habits die hard - is mortality. One song, 'This Heaven', reflects Gilmour's atheism. 'There is an element of contended resignation in that song. It extols the virtues of living in the moment and accepting your mortality. Perhaps the closest I will get to immortality will be through Dark Side of the Moon. I think that record will go on being played for a while yet.' " Nigel Farndale interviewing Gilmour, 'Still on the dark side', The Sunday Telegraph (London), May 28, 2006, Section Seven, Pg. 8.

Accordingly, David Gilmour is an Atheist and that's partly what "This Heaven" reflects, apparently.

Days of the New – Where Are You? Lyrics 18 years ago
When I first heard this song, what really caught my attention was the chorus, and I thought "holy crap! Travis wrote a song about fishing!"

It's positions - where I am
the further demand, the fact of expanding
your body's in my hands
The catch of the day try running away
Where are you?

Lines like "The catch of the day, try running away" and "your body's in my hands," really sound like a fishing song.

Then I gave this song a better listen.

I do still believe that song is about fishing, but metaphorically. Think of us humans as the fish and God or a higher power as the fisher. This song is about, to me, coming to "your time" and being caught by the higher power, or "fisher," and brought above:

"You go to let your soul break free"

Led Zeppelin – Nobody's Fault but Mine Lyrics 19 years ago
roadrunner99, give it up. I don't mean to start any "internet fights" or anything, but all you are suggesting is that Satan has better taste in music than God. Either admit that or shut up. Led Zeppelin did NOT sell their souls to Satan. Neither did Robert Johnson, BTW.

I think the Satan lyric is a "shout out," if you will, to everyone who made that claim at the time. Robert's lyrics for it are about moving on after such a devastating year, quitting addiction, slowing down, etc. But that Satan lyric is nothing more than a diss thrown at all these idiots who kept saying "oh those guys sold their souls to Satan."

What, so in order to have any kind of musical talent like being an incredible harmonica player/singer/guitar player/bassist/keyboardist/musician/percussionist, you have to sell your soul to Satan so he can create that talent within you, meaning God is not the only being who can create?

So maybe I should go sell my soul to Satan so I can be an awesome guitarist, too. Oh, wait. I'm Jewish and don't believe in Satan. All well... guess that's out of the question. Maybe I should just PRACTICE!

Please stop it, roadrunner. You come off as a completely retarded idiot with nothing better to do. Led Zeppelin souled their souls to music, not Satan. Get over it and go spam some other forum with your nonsensical bullcrap.

Led Zeppelin – Dazed and Confused Lyrics 19 years ago
This has been said numerous times, but I will say it, too.

This song was not writen by Jimmy Page. His version was, yes. He definitely reworked it and made it better. But it was written by Jake Holmes. It is track 6 on "The Above Ground Sound of Jake Holmes." It's acoustic, and friggin' awesome (and if you go to YouTube and search for jimmyRRpage, I cover Jake Holmes's version).

Second, when Jake Holmes wrote it, it was NOT about an acid-trip. Jake later (like, in 2003 later) revealed that he in fact never tripped on acid, but on marijuana. He said when he wrote this song his girlfriend was going back and forth about leaving or staying. One day it was leaving, the next, it was staying. Hence, his very first opening line:

"I've been dazed and confused, is it stay is it go"

When JP and the Yardbirds stole it, they only made one or two minimal changes to the lyrics, and called it "I'm Confused." When The Yardbirds finally died, Jimmy Page had it redone with Plant, Jones, and Bonham, Page gave it back the original title of "Dazed and Confused," and it was either Page, Plant, or the two of them that ultimately changed the lyrics to what they are on the studio recording. Plant would later change the lyrics live again for 1973 onwards, and include snatches of either "Woodstock" or "Going to San Francisco" just before the bow solo on all performances from 1973 onwards until 1977, when the song was no longer performed live (though Page would employee the bow on lengthy, sometimes boring but most-times cool "guitar solos" before going into Achilles Last Stand).

And BTW, the three offcially released live performances of D&C by Led Zep come no where near the longest live performance of the song by the band, which was never officially released. I'll get back to y'all on this, and I'll put up a link to the interview where Jake Holmes reveals what his version was actually about. Basically, the meaning of the song nevr changes from Jake Holmes to Led Zepeplin.

Put in general terms, D&C was about the nature of women to confuse men, never stating exactly what they want or what they are going to do and forcing men to guess, knowing that men will almost always guess wrong.

Eagles – Lyin' Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
Kaaaaa, I think kobo1d got teh murder part from this verse:

My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things
You set it up so well, so carefully

But, to me, this part of that last verse:

Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things
You're still the same old girl you used to be

Says to me that, while she does end up with the boy she cheated with, she ends up feeling exactly the same way she did with her original husband.

Led Zeppelin – Babe I'm Gonna Leave You Lyrics 19 years ago
First off, as DangerBird said, this was originally performed by a woman named Joan Baez, although it sounds very, very different. Second, I have the 2-DVD Set, and have watched the entire thing many, many times, including all the extras. They have a D&Z 69 clip, but where is Babe I'm Gonna Leave You on the 2-DVD Set?

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 20 years ago
Religion, LOTR...
Question 1:
I gotta be honest. I love it how there are people out there who have to make a classic, good song religious. And of they can't, it must be an evil song. Why is that? And why do you have to make any Led Zeppelin Song, including this one, a victim?

Question 2:
I know Battle of Evermore is about Lord of teh Rings. It's obvious. but Stairway to Heaven? First off, could someone elaborate on what they think are LOTR references? What lines seem to parallel LOTR? Gold? Bustle? Piper? Stairway to Heaven? What are these supposed references. And BTW, just because the song before is about LOTR, and the song after is possibly about LOTR (which I shouldn't say, because it isn't), doesn't mean the song in between 'em has to be. Led Zeppelin was not a fucking Theatre Rock band, like Queensryche. They were just teh best rock band in history. They don't have to make one CD be about the same subject. I can have to songs baout LOTR on my CD's, but that doesn't mean the CD or the song in between those two is about LOTR.

And... that's all.

Anyone considered that maybe it's an acid trip gone bad? I gotta be honest. My favorite interpetation comes from jimmy_page, on either page 23, 24, or 25 of this thread.
